So you didn't have to claim anything?

    • +8

That's pretty much how insurance works, dude.

The policy number with gibberish attached is what you're paying for…

    • what did you expect?

    • What did you get when you joined health cover? You might not get a piece a paper, they email you the policy instead. At least with a piece of paper you can wipe your ass with.

    • -1

      10/10 bait

    • What did you expect them to send, a gold plated insurance policy certificate? Did you expect some free upgrades?

If nothing bad happened then you didn't need it and you should be HAPPY about that!

    • Is this Ken M?

  • Anyone recommend Allianz? Or any negs in relation to them?

    • Used to have car insurance with them. They were decent but quite expensive compared to the market.

    • I've had travel insurance with them. Excellent standard of cover, reasonable price plus they're a massive, international underwriter. I haven't had to claim

      • +2

how you recommending them without going through the claim process? So you happy with the

"piece of paper with a policy number and some other gibberish about the policy"

        ? :)

Been reading reviews as travelling to NZ soon. Mostly negative from people who actually took out claims. Positive reviews seem to be from people who bought the insurance but didn't need to make a claim. Best to check before you buy. Think I'll pass.

    • Thanks - will likely stick with TID. Also noticed that for a recent trip coming up its not deducting a full 15% from comprehensive policy to USA - $223.26 is the base online price only bought down to $205.17 … now I know maths may not be my strongest point but thats definitely not 15%.

A review for anyone looking for Allianz Travel Insurance and a response to Jaypicks troll comment above:

Took out comprehensive travel insurance on a holiday overseas with Allianz for 2 people 1 Dependent (about $200), someone got into an accident (not going into details but they basicly got a fracture preventing them from walking). We followed the policy which said to contact them right away. Their over the phone response was always available and very helpful. They approved the claim within 24 hours so all medical bills were paid for, they paid for extra nights to spend in the same hotel (not a cheap hotel) while the person waited for a fit to fly clearance. They then organised and paid for transfers to the airport for all of us and Business Class flights for the effected person and a 1 companion (As the doctor recommended a business class seat) they also went above and beyond to pay for an economy flight for the additional person since we would have been split up if that person had to take the original return flight. They then organised and paid for all transfers home, as well as loss of income for a bit while the person recovered.

So in my eyes Allianz is everything I needed when I needed it, as long as you understand what your buying, what you can claim and the exact things you need to do to make sure you don't breach your policy (i.e contacting them right away, making sure you document everything from the location of an incident and witness statements etc.. you shouldnt get screwed over. So i'll be using Allianz every time I go overseas unless something changes.

Also an ozBargin Tip is that webjet's travel insurance uses Allianz as the provider and are cheaper premiums than directly through Allianz themselves.

Good to hear they looked after you.

  • Don't most platinum and black credit cards come with travel insurance these days? Only reason I've managed to do away with buying it.

    • +1

Probably just basic one not comprehensive insurance. So you bear the risk for something not being covered by credit cards.

      • ANZ's QBE insurance with their Black and Platinum cards are pretty much the same as most comprehensive insurances. But of course only cover the cardholder and travel companions when they are traveling together.

Not sure on the other banks of course.

        • CBA is only basic travel insurance via Allianz. Learnt it the hard way, of course me being lazy and not reading all the T&C also contributed to me not getting my claim.

        • awesome. I have an ANZ, Westpac, and CBA black cards so i guess I'll stick with ANZ when booking flights.

Silly question, but can someone explain the difference between the basic and comprehensive insurance? What are the typical exclusions?

          Cheers

        • @Zackyis:

Did you activate your card insurance?
As I found out from a Family member before a recent trip CBA is only basic insurance if you don't activate the cover before leaving, activating before leaving either via their app or NetBank website gets you a higher level of coverage with Allianz Global insurance.

Though personally I haven't gone and compared coverage levels with this deal.

        • @CheapGit: Yeah i activated it before i left - apparently you don't get any insurance if you don't activate?
My case was travel delay and that was excluded in the T&C which I found out after.

        • @Zackyis:

That's not good, you would have thought with their product being covered by Allianz Global it would be covered.
The joys of holidays and travel insurance, when you should be relaxing or getting prepared you end up getting confused reading all the bloomin T&C's !

        • @Zackyis:

I have Allianz cover via my CBA card. Although I haven't claimed yet, it does say that there is coverage for 'travel delay expenses' up to $650.

        • @ozbarsil: oh? i'll give them a call again tomorrow then

    • Watch out! Look into the actual cover provided very carefully. I can almost guarantee that there are lots of exclusions, red tape etc

  • +1

Do they cover checked in luggages? Insureandgo doesn't and I learned it hard way.

  • +1

Quick quote was $148 for similar insurance to what I bought this morning for $70 with Travel Insuranz, just FYI.

The one I bought I would say would be somewhere between Allianz Basic and Comprehensive.

  • +1

Only taking around 8% off the price when I compare it before and after, but still a good deal as I have found Allianz to be fairly competitive pricing already when comparing like for like with other insurers even after applying discounts with the competition.

  • +3

    Thanks OP.

FYI: You can potentially get another 10% on top (25% off total). Just simply ring up the correct department, and request a 10% discount (State that you're a new customer and they will send a 10% off code).

    I've done it once.

    • I called up they are only offering the standard 7.5% discount applied automatically I was told. Would of bit on this insurance had I got a 10% code. Owell I'll look around or wait.

    • So any trace of alcohol regardless is enough to void your insurance? :(

      • pretty much

        • That makes any TI worthless when travelling overseas (in particular Europe where beer is almost cheaper than water!)

  • Reduced from $118.52 to $108.95 by using promo code - roughly 8% discount

  • So.. this or TID..?

  • For the life of me, I can't understand why people pay extra for travel insurances, or take out a separate travel insurance? Don't they have credit cards that automatically cover them for travel insurance if they pay for the tickets with that credit card? I've luckily never had to claim, but aren't the auto-covers with credit cards good enough? I've read through PDS for Citibank (fee free CC) and my AMEX Explorer cards and they both seem pretty reasonable with the covers.
Are these deals only for people that don't have Credit Cards that has auto travel insurance or am I missing something here?

    • If you book airfare with points credit card insurance generally won't cover you.

    • +1

If you read the PDS on most CC travel insurances, they're not worth the paper they're written on with all the exclusions and requirements to be met prior to it being valid. For example, I have an amex black via westpac which is their highest end card. Reading the PDS, travel insurance doesn't kick in unless $500 is spent PER PERSON travelling for a trip to be valid and all accommodation and flights must be booked with it. So, that makes me upcoming trip to Bali null even though I booked my flights with it because my wife bought us a resort package as a gift for my birthday.

      Bogus.
