Thanks OP. Timely reminder for me. We booked and paid non refundable accom/lifts for Japan for January 2026. Better get my policy organised while there’s a discount. I had a big tumble snowboarding years ago and TID flew me and wife home business class. They’ve got my business for life.

  • Curious fact of the day

TID was one of the key brands owned and operated by World Nomads Group.

In July 2015, nib acquired 100% of World Nomads Group (WNG) for AU$95 million.

In April 2019, World Nomads Group rebranded to nib Travel.

nib has made a cumulative net profit after tax of well over $1 billion in the last 10 years

  • Thanks, have a trip coming up with the family to Canada.
Used to use TID in the past and considering 1Cover and InsureandGo.
    Any experiences with these?

    • I used 1Cover while I was in Thailand, they ended up declining all my expenses when I got covid over there on the technicality of I wasn't rushed to Thailand in an ambulance, rather self admitted to a covid hotel. Either way it was a positive covid test and it was about 2.5k in expenses. Simply flat out refused. Will never go with them again.

      • Thank you for sharing your experience. I guess that's off the list.
I don't expect every insurance company to pay out every single claim, but in this case, covid is covid.

        • No of course not, but it was a pretty shitty experience.

A while ago I asked a mate who is in the industry who he thinks would be the best to go with, he said RACV and his words were "they actually give a f*** about their customers" which is some big words to say for an insurance company, but I don't want to be in a similar situation so I go with them now.

But as old mate said, that's just my experience

Surely I'm not the only one that buys travel insurance at the time I book the trip? In case of medical event or similar that requires cancellation?

    • Many people can afford to self insure cancellation costs. It's the medical that gets expensive, really. Almost by definition, your holiday costs are something you can afford to lose. But medical can rapidly escalate beyond what you can afford.

Check your credit cards if they have complimentary travel insurance included when you book/ed your flights

Fan of the ANZ credit cards with Allianz underwritten TI - you only need to include $250 of your travel costs to have full trip coverage. Their conditions are pretty good as well, especially with hire car excess.

    Hi all,

I've vowed to neg every TID post/deal that comes through, this is so people are aware of my bad experience:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869652

    Summary on experience:

I had a bad experience claiming with Travel Insurance Direct.

There was an earthquake in Japan and I couldn't travel from Tokyo to Osaka due to damage on the train system.

This resulted in me also not being able to arrive to my Osaka hotel.

TID advised me the train company and hotel should compensate me if it was impacted by the earthquake, not them.

TID also requested I get written evidence from the train and hotel companies advising they won't cover me even before they look into my claim.

What's the point of having travel insurance when they're not covering these scenarios.

My work colleague used their credit card travel insurance with the same scenario and no problems claiming.

I advise you to contact other travel insurances with a few scenarios and how they go about compensation eg., like my scenario.

It may be worth the extra money looking elsewhere.

    An alternative:

I've done a ton of research on other travel insurance companies post that experience, Tick Travel Insurance was what I ended up with based on price and what they cover:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/tickinsurance.com.au

They run 15% off promos once in a while.

It's just a suggestion based on my personal experience

Good to know. Not surprising really, most insurance providers are absolute scum.

    • Earthquake is act of God. No insurer covers for that.

      • +1

Some do - "we will reimburse reasonable travel and accommodation expenses" see page 32

        • Er no. That's under the subheading of "Personal Safety Evacuation" and talks about evacuating the insured from a country or region for safety reasons, not about an interruption to a trip (as what Ausdave was whinging about)

          • +1

            @oscargamer:

Additional travel & accommodation expenses due to specified events. In addition, if during the period of cover available a
disruption to your journey arises from: • your scheduled or connecting transport is cancelled, delayed, rescheduled or diverted because of a strike, riot, hijack, civil protest, weather, natural disaster or accident affecting your mode of transport;… we will reimburse your reasonable additional travel and accommodation expenses. Please contact Allianz Global Assistance for approval of these costs. Such approval will not be unreasonably withheld or delayed.

            top paragraph in page 42.

            Then on the same page:
            To the extent permitted by law, we will not pay your claim:….. for cancellations, delays, rescheduling or diversions to your scheduled or connecting transport unless it is due to a strike, riot, hijack, civil protest, weather, natural disaster or accident affecting your mode of transport;

            • -1

@Davo1111: Good pick up, but that covers additional expenses due to the event, not monies already paid

              • +1

@oscargamer: I'm not sure what you mean.

If i cant get to my hotel, they would pay for the new hotel. Not refund me the old one.

I'm not sure what happens if you missed a concert, the PDS mentions "special events", and that they would pay for more expensive travel to get you to the event because of delayed travel. I cant see explicitly if the special event itself is covered though.

                • +1

@Davo1111: I'm replying to Ausdave and how this policy would deal with his incident. willyroo suggested that this policy would have covered him

      • There are no act of god exclusions in australian insurance

    • Its thanks to your unwavering commitment I haven't gone with them for TI. Perhaps you have answered in other posts, I assume the train company compensated you for the train ticket, unless it was not needed due to a JR pass. What you were left holding the bag with was the hotel costs?

An earthquake directly affects trains by cancelling them but does not cancel hotel, hence no compensation from the hotel and a legit claim for TI. One of the worst tactics they used was asking you to get written evidence, its like saying get a letter from the thief saying they won't return your stolen goods.

    • Tick have a natural disaster add-on for their travel insurance, not sure what the real pros and cons of that are. Took it anyway for our Japan trip.

It's worth checking the previous 20% code with them as I've found it working previously when marked as expired.

    • +1

Respect your opinion, but just for any other users reading this thread and to offer a different perspective, Tick denied me a claim last year where a train failure in Japan caused me to miss my flights home. I’ve also claimed with TID previously and had a positive experience.

Guess it always pays to make sure the PDS covers your needs.

    • +1

      from choice review on Tick:

This insurance company is a 100% rip off.We made a claim for additional emergency expenses, they broke the claim up to individual sections then applied the excess to each so we got nothing.our whole claim was due to a single flight cancelation. This is so wrong what they have done.

      • wow, that is disgusting.

  • before my last big personal trip to japan, i sat down and compared all cheap travel insurances. Some of them i couldnt think of a single hypothetical example where i could actually make a claim. Not saying it was the case in this company, just be careful and read the PDS

  • Just checked pricing for my Japan trip later this year and I dunno about anyone else but this seems super expensive. Over $300 for single trip. In comparison, Tick travel insurance costs $170ish for their top cover currently with their 10% off code.
For context, I travel overseas with my family twice a year and have used Freely, Southern Cross, RACV and Tick travel insurance companies.

    • hey, so how would you rate them? or have you never needed to claim from any of them?
