The Martingale collar provides positive feedback and helps keep your dog from slipping away. It enhances dog safety and control without choking. I would never buy a Martingale collar with a material slip loop, it will eventually fray.

Much better with chain than webbing.

    Plus no quick release.

    • I have one of theses style collars with the chain you mention and the chain has started to rust. Obviously quality isn't the highest in the one I have but I don't really see much issue with them using, it is nylon which is quite abrasion resistant.

As for the quick release, I'm not sure if its needed. The one I use slips snugly over my dogs head and only when he tries to walk off on my does it tighten so he can't slip off.

To me the weakest point of these is the zinc coating on whatever metal they are using. It will wear pretty quickly, resulting is them rusting. Then you will have a problem as the nylon wont slide anymore.

      • I've seen the nylon ones fray and fail, chain is much better (especially with a boisterous dog).

If you get a good quality one, it won't rust.

I have a Kumfi Martingale and my dog swims with it, absolutely no signs of rust.

And a quick release makes getting them on and off much easier, when they're adjusted properly it's a tight fit over my dog's head.

        • I'll check that one out. The good thing with the chain is it provides a feedback loop to the doc, when they hear the chain it will prompt them to walk next to you. All providing the dog is trained :P

    • Or just use a flat collar, which are more effective, cheaper and more humane.

      • Flat collars are not more effective, try it with a strong dog that pulls and lunges and they don't do a thing.

Flat collars are only good for trained dogs that already heel well.

        • try it with a strong dog that pulls and lunges and they don't do a thing

Try training your dog properly… no collar will train your dog for you. Some may mask the problems, but no collar will do the work for you.

Source: tried pretty much everything on our dog, in the end just put the effort in and got the reward.

        • @magicmoose:

A Martingale is a training aid and does not replace training, you still have to teach the dog.

Source: I've trained dogs for decades, both professionally and socially.
