    Can I use this instead of my SAGEMCOM 3864AC supplied by Optus for NBN?

    Edit: nevermind, just saw this: "****PLEASE NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH 'FTTN' NBN CONNECTIONS****"

    • +2

      Is it not?

      "Works with any kind of internet connection
      Works with any kind of internet connection DSL-AC68U supports all common types of DSL connection, including ADSL2, ADSL2+, ADSL and VDSL2. Thanks to its Ethernet WAN option, it can also be used seamlessly with any fiber or cable-based modem with an Ethernet connection. This makes it ideal for those who intend to upgrade their ISP in the future."

      Also on whirlpool compliant nbn list:

      edit damn just saw the same thing on the description.
      Please note: This model does not have a built-in modem

      Found the modem router for AU $250.20 delivered. Not sure if it's a bargain.

        Optus provided me with a separate device which I assume is the modem on top of the sagemcom.. this is what cinfuses me as to whether i can just replace thr sagemcom with another router. I might try the belkin n600 I've got in the cupboard first.

        The "RT" stands for router.

  • I'm a bit confused, apparently there're different versions of this things, RT and AC or something.. Is this the one that allows me to go on the internet? Both ADSL and NBN?

    • +2

      There are two main versions as far as I know, RT-AC68U which is just a router, and DSL-AC68U which is a modem and router. The modem version is compatible with ADSL2/2+, ADSL, VDSL2, fiber and cable services.

        so whats the point of this RT model?

        • +2

          To use as a router when you do not need modem functionality - this applies to the majority of NBN connections types - only excluding FTTN….. I think?

        • +3

          If you need just a router without a modem

          I have Telstra cable and bridge the supplied modem to the RT-AC68U which does acts as the router + WAP

          3rd party firmware like Tomato, OpenWRT and DDWRT work with this modem.

          You can do all sorts of neat geeky things with these, but you'll need another device up front to connect to the fibre or cable network.

          @syousef:

          Tomato only works on older versions of this router. I think post C1 hardware it loops in boot.

          @bobdobal:

          Thanks for the heads up. Wasn't aware of this and Tomato is my preferred firmware. Wasn't going to buy it either though as I currently use a WRT54GL for DHCP and my Telstra Gateway Max (C6300BD with broken firmware Telstra won't fix) for gateway and AC1900. Still wouldn't want to lead anyone else astray. Good work mate!

    • This does not have DSL modem, so no good for ADSL or FTTN NBN. Good for FTTP or HFC connections.

    bought one from Wireless1 12days ago using a birthday 10% off coupon after a BuyItNow offer . Got it for $183. I finally connected it to by NBN modem (HFC arris modem) last night, and speeds are SOOOO much faster. I loaded Merlin firmware onto it, too. Would have loved to have saved an extra $10.

  • I just recently got the t mobile version off Amazon for those wanting to save a few bucks and willing to flash it.

  • Excuse the noob question.

    When you get a nbn fttn service connected do they normally provide you with a modem with a wan ethernet port that I can connect this to ? Thanks.

  • Guys I need a good modem for Optus NBN that I can plug in and use my land line

  • any recommendation on a modem router that supports both NBN and backup 3/4G data connection using a USB dongle? thanks in advance.
