My GF's Mum Let in Randoms to "Install NBN Program"

Hey Guys,

So I got a call from my gf today pissed as hell about her mum. Her mum let 2 dudes into the house because they said they were installing NBN on the computer (I know right…lols).

Anyways, she went into the history and they only did two things (that she knows of).

  1. They installed teamviewer (i am fully aware of what teamviewer is)

  2. They logged into NAB. None of her family uses NAB.

I actually have no idea what their plan was. They probably installed keyloggers or something a little more sinister - access someones NAB bank (another victim) account via team viewer so that the IP logged would be of my gf's house.

I have no idea.

Appreciate any help in this.

Thanks,
Riz

Report it to the local police station.

    • Thanks for your post. Told her the same thing. Hopefully the posts convince her now.

    Call the police

    • Thanks for your post. Told her too. But she won't ffs.

  • ditto

    • What's Ditto going to do, she's just a singer?

      • +2

There will be no red flag upon her door.

They installed teamviewer (i am fully aware of what teamviewer is)

I hope you're aware that TeamViewer can be configured for remote access at any time as long as the program is running. Also make sure any passwords for websites that were saved on the computer are changed. It's incredibly easy to pull that information out from a computer.

Seriously make sure the computer is off and call the police. We're not going to magically have a solution.

    • Thanks for your post. Told her exact thing. Make it offline and don't connect it to the net. Apparently getting formatted tomorrow.

      • Make sure to change all passwords that were used in that time and important information.

Anything that was on or touched that computer is now compromised and should be thought of have being seen.

People activate it months later to try cloud their footprints.

Definitely report to the police so that they have a record of what happened so in future someone from that IP does anything illegal, they'll have a record of your report.

But the more urgent thing to do at hand is:

    • scan her entire bedroom and house for bugs(Especially go through all the power points).
    • format/factory reset all electronic devices
    • factory reset modem
    • change wifi passwords
    • change all other passwords ***make sure you do it after the devices have been format/reset ***
    • check for any missing valuables in the house.

And lastly, do a little investigation to see if anyone in her family has any conflict with anyone recently or any admirer/stalkers she may have came across on social medias recently.

Thanks for your post. Gahhh, looks like I'll have to do the sweep. They won't know where to start. Her parents don't know she has a bf. Ill have to act like Im a guy installing light globes - once switched on, the light produced will be faster than the original speed of light….

      • +2

lmao this is getting funnier, keep updating OP pls.

        • Bahhahah!

Make sure you disable the wifi, keep that pc off line and ideally reformat

    • +10

      ideally reformat

      No, just reformat.

      • +50 to Format that sucker if you ever want to use it again.

    • Thanks mate. Definitely offline. Reformat to come.

    cyberbikies

    • Anonymous?

        Hotel trivago.

  • Call the police…

Also your gf’s Mum should change her password to everything , back up her important files and do a secure disk wipe.

Who tf lets ransoms into their house…?

    • +22

Everything is not a very strong password.

      • Epic troll. Good giggle

Fk me what is wrong with the 9 people that up voted this ?

        • +1

@knick007: Lol same thing that's wrong with the next 11 who upvoted :)

    • Thanks mate. I know lol. Who lets that happen.

  • +11

check for hidden cam in bedroom, toilet, shower.

    • She is freaking the shit out right now after reading this. Hahahah

Thanks tho and will do. I'll have a quick look.

  • Back up data and reinstall Windows. Pray they haven't installed a persistent rootkit.

Do not use the computer for anything to so with money until this has occurred.

    • Thanks for the post. Hope not

  • Presumably you will get a follow up phone call. Might just be skyped from Kolkata, but it's worth having a plan.

    • +1

This…apparently this is what happened today.

Burn the whole house down to be safe!

If your gfs mum is sure that they didn't go anywhere else in the house other than the computer, then wipe and reinstall everything.

But obviously sit down and ask her nicely and don't get angry. She may not tell you everything if she thinks you guys would get more angry at her.

    • +3

And the neighborhood while you're at it, you know… Just to be safe.

      • +2

        Then salt the earth.

    • +1

      Agree To all statements.

Specifically agree about burning house down like that bloke who was trying to kill a spider.

  • To be safe, destroy your disk, restore from a backup to a new disk, and forget that it ever happened. She propably did the right thing letting em in, they could of beaten her up then did what they did instead, so she should consider herself lucky.

    • Thanks for your post. Hopefully theyll all learn from this.

  • +2

Time to report it to the cops and then do illegal stuff on that computer - blame the two guys later.

    • +1

      silk road here OP comes!

    • Damn good idea. You're a thinker - half glass full type of guy hahaha

  • -1

Have you cleared your browser history?

Cops will look at it and even though they will not judge they will.

    • I got nothing to hide..not my computer haha

  • access someones NAB bank (another victim) account via team viewer so that the IP logged would be of my gf's house.

This doesn't make sense. There is absolutely no reason for someone to use another persons ip in this manner. VPN, incognito, Tor, ect, would be a better method to stay undetected.

These guys have now left themselves with a witness.

    • Agree. You have valid and realistic points.

  • This is scary. You've prompted me to educate parents tonight. Thanks.

    • I educated my parents about sex after I got a porn phishing email.

      • +2

I educated my parents about sex after I was born. They learnt and no more children after that.

    • Parent's are sooooo gullible. My computer got the ransomware bs from my parents. The next day i went and bought myself a laptop.

  • +6

Why are people so gullible. I never cease to be amazed at the lack of common sense displayed people.I worry about my parents (and other aged people) that seem to be willing to believe the most ridiculous proposals from strange people.

    Report to the police.

    • Because our elderly are more trusting.

    • Ikr tell me about it.

  • +1

    Format c: /s

    • Defs

Tho /s I've seen on reddit. Does it mean joke?

      • /S is a switch for the FORMAT command to copy system files to the new disk so your computer can boot up from it after the format.

      • +1

/s means the person was being sarcastic

        • Tyty

  • +8

This story was getting rather exciting when she invited 2 dudes into the house then fizzled substantially when its to install teamviewer.

    • +1

Were you hoping they were pool cleaners?

      • +3

        Yeah.

Or angry landlords wanting late rent or alternative payment.

        • Ew lol ew..

  • Grab a hose and wash your fingerprints off everything…

Jokes aside - just Clean the pc; and report to the police (which was mentioned above). If team viewer is on there then the pc is probably compromised for any day to day use.

    • Thanks for your post. Definitely will.

  • Call in Hilary Clinton's IT people, they'll hammer out a solution.

  • +2

Tell your gf to stop wearing non skimpy clothing it's off putting. I mean reformat.

    • Lmfao! Tell me about it. I like that you and me see the same :P

      • ;) ;)

  • Burn the house down. Problem solved.

  • +1

Before you format run something like malwarebytes and see whats on there so you can see what they did / were planning on doing .

    • Was about to comment this. Malwarebytes is the best I've used. Cleaned so many infected PC's with it.

  • +2

You'll always be safe from vampires in your home, as they can never enter a premises without being invited. Upon receiving an invitation, however, they have no such restriction and may come and go as they please.

I'm not saying these guys were vampires.
But if they were, your mum may want to consider browsing some rentals online. On a different computer, of course.

  • keen to see how this one rolls out for you.

i'd be extra careful making sure your house is secured, they may have been canvassing your house looking for weak points to gain entry

    • +1

hey mate, we did a format of the computer. They ended up calling from "telstra" to get access to the computer to install etc.

Everyone knew it was a scam so it didnt work this time luckily!

  • I feel sick just thinking about this. I'm hoping that a computer format is the end of it for you, your gf and her Mum.
Good luck with the intro as the bf btw. 😊

I agree, police need to know… There may be other vulnerable people being targeted for who knows what.

    • +2

ahahha thanks for the support! :)

Computer was formatted, police were told and the dweebs called a few days ago to get access.

They knew it was a scam so they didnt give access
