Bricked Xbox One - Microsoft Wants to Charge Me $155 to Replace

Hi everyone my Xbox one bricked after the last mandatory update and I contacted Microsoft and they stated since it is out of warranty I need to pay $155 to replace it. No way. How do I avoid this charge and how can I seek a remedy from Microsoft? Any help would be much appreciated

  • When did you buy it? What was the warranty term offered?

    • The warranty is dealt directly through Microsoft once it's passed the "change of mind" phase. I believe it's like 3 years or something and you do it straight through the Microsoft website as the console registers under your email automatically.

No, not if you bought it from a store that's not Microsoft.

        • What are you talking about? Log into Microsoft > Devices >Schedule a repair*…

          @pl3x:
You can go to the store you bought you item and they are the ones that can organise warranty work. You do not have to deal with the manufacturer directly if you don't want to and the sellers can't make you. That's general acl rules.

@PVA: Have fun doing that when it's 10x easier to do it directly through Microsoft with a 1-2 week turnaround at your own convenience with it sent back to your doorstep instead of having to actually go to the store, and have people at the store doing runarounds…

        • @pl3x: so I called was told I need to pay $155 for it as it was outside the 2 year warranty period. The console is just under 3 years old. I asked for a complaints email and hit the twitter account up but they wont give me a complaints or open a complaint. I want to open a complaint because in case I do go to ACCC that's one of the first things they ask. Also wanted to know if peeps have been subject to this extortion before by MS

      • It's the manufacturers responsibility, although the retailer at point of sale is liable to give the customer a remedy. I doubt Target would know what to do with the console if I took it back to them.

    That sucks, if true.
    ACCC ?

Or maybe buy a Brand New unit from Microsoft directly, and switch units, say it arrived DoA… then refund.
Of course, its not ethical or "right", but it is something you might practically be able to do.
Again, that sucks to be in that predicament.

In addition to being a shit thing to do, Microsoft uses the serial for a lot of authentication so you'd probably be pulled up on that rubbish pretty quick.

      "Dear customer,

Thankyou for forwarding your console to us. Upon inspection, the console you bought from us last week that is DOA suddenly has four years of online game play history. pls explain"

        "Dear MS,

You sent me a second hand item as new?"

        .

    • That would only work with a retailer, not directly with microsoft, you are also technically breaking the law, would you risk being found out for a few hundred bux ?

  • One thing to do is to try calling again. You may get a nicer MS employee that will actually help although their processes would be highly scripted.

Your consumer guarantee on the Xbox would be longer than the warranty on the Xbox at any rate. I would imagine the expected life of an expensive gaming console would be 3-5 years as a minimum. If Microsoft do not fix it, I would politely tell them about your rights (quote the info off the ACCC website under your consumer guarantee section). If they still fail to help then contact the ACCC.

(I assume your XBox One is under 5 years old by the way.)

    • I linked them to ACCC site :)

    • This is mostly the correct advice. The provided warranty on a device isn't worth the paper (or website) it's printed on. The Australian Consumer Law is what matters here.

Except ACCC wont do anything. You need to contact your state and territory consumer affairs agency. They're the ones who will play mediator.

When you say it got "bricked after an update", do you mean you accidentally switched off the device or there was a power failure during the upgrade and that's the cause of the issue?

    • No tried updating wouldn't update then after a day I had to turn it off. I figured it would just go back to default. It did worked fine then another mandatory update. Then dead. Stuck on Green logo screen

This would be the focus of my argument - why should you be forced to pay for an issue that comes from their update, etc.
