OK Google do I need it?

    • +8

      Can echo that sentiment :|

  • Love my google home. Sound quality is great.

Anyone know how this goes as a speaker?

    • Apart from good sound quality what else has it been useful for?

      • Lots of Spotify but aside from that, shopping list, weather, kids love asking it questions, random questions answered, control TV and AC w/IFTTT

        • @Bellpop - what do you use for the shopping list app?

I've been using the list on Google Express (formerly Google Keep) but it's very much USA only and I have to keep downloading new apk's when they update it etc.

        • +1

@Deviner: Just the list linked from the google Home app. I just created shortcut to website on my iphone

        • @Bellpop: Sweet, didn't realise this was working now!
This used to open Google Express up and that was only available in USA so it wouldn't work before.

Must be only available in the last couple of months I think.

Had a group of friends over the other night, we actually don't hours playing the games it offers. It's awesome that it knows the voice who's asking questions too, my wife and I can get updates of traffic/news/schedule from our individual accounts. Once you start asking it questions, you get used to it. For cooking a it's great too, set timers, get conversions for weight/heat etc without using your hands. No one needs this thing, but it's an awesome toy that you get used to using regularly

I use it mostly as an alarm. Since I work different hours each day, I usually got to bed saying "hey Google, wake me at 6:30/8/10 tomorrow"
        Quick and easy.

Also good for white noise and such.

        • Can't you just do this with your phone though? I really don't understand this product

        • @ONEMariachi: yeah, but I don't need to turn this on to use it, and I'm typically already asleep when I set it.

It's just a bit more convenient than a phone. The sound quality is also better, and it's easier to shut up.

        • +2

@ONEMariachi: so to play music to my stereo with my phone I need to find my phone, unlock it, open Spotify, search for song, click play, setup Bluetooth. If I leave the room it stops working and it drains the phone battery. Or i can just say "hey google play <insert song here> on the stereo"

It's less loud than the Google Home but still much louder than others its size (I.e. Amazon Echo Dot).

Also it has no battery so you wouldn't be able to use it as a portable speaker. Also doesn't have an aux input.

      • Thanks

      • +1

Why would you need an aux input when you can subscribe to google play music for 9.99 per month.

    • Anyone know how this goes as a speaker?

Obviously not ideal for music. But fine for voice applications.
No headphone socket, and no bluetooth audio out, I believe. But you can use it to control your chromecast etc.

  • Wow, cheap enough to have one in every room!

    • That's their whole plan with the cheaper device.

Audio is supposed to be a little lackluster but haven't tested myself.

Get it now or wait for 20% off eBay sale? Does Officeworks eBay go on sale often?

    • It's not listed by any actual retailer on eBay at the moment.

One more week to spend $70+ at Woolworths and will get mine as a reward! (hopefully)

    • +3

I do wish I had that offer, but no, never targeted :(

    • +1

Yep, 15 movie tickets and 15 boxes of Favourites in my house because of that deal! Now just one week to go, not sure what else I can buy.

  • Woolworths offers me a free one if I spend $50 for four weeks.

    • Unfortunately they didn't really offer a way to track how much you had spent. I don't usually spend $50 in one transaction, so I couldn't really work out how much I had spent without tracking it myself.

      • It has to be that amount in a single transaction, not the sum of what you spent over a week.

        • +1

There is a message on the receipt if you have passed the week's post.

        • +1

mine says in as many transactions as you like (each week for 4 weeks).

Expired - Out of stock? "Sorry. We don't have enough 'Google Home Mini (119079)' in stock to fulfill your order"

    • +1

      RIP that was quick

    • Still can order.

  • +1

Anyone else getting "Special Discount '10% Storewide' from Telstra Accessories (ACCESS10) only applies to specific products. Your order will be processed without this discount."?

    • Yes same here.

      • See reply below.

    • I bought one of these last week, with the access 10 code, it said the same thing, however, I was only charged the 71.10

    • +1

Don't worry too much, I saved a screenshot that says sitewide in case they do charge you full price (which would be misleading to say the least).
