Common Questions

How much is postage?

Postage is a flat rate of $20 (for an order of one box, each additional box is $10) anywhere in the world. We also have express options to the USA and Canada for $35 which guarantees delivery in 2-5 days and $45 for the UK.

Who do you use for postage?

DHL eCommerce is our standard postage solution, DHL Express is our Express option. All local orders are posted with Australia Post Express.

Do the boxes come with a small koala/kangaroo toy as seen in the pictures?

Yes every box comes with a small animal keychain

I could do this cheaper myself, why would I send a box with you?

Whilst on the surface it looks like you could do it cheaper yourself there are a number of factors to consider. On top of the cost of the items themselves you would need to purchase a shipping box, go to the post office and pay the regular retail rates for international postage. Our shipping rates are less than half the cost of Australia Post. On top of all of this our service saves you a lot of time and is incredibly convenient for sending gifts overseas.

Can I add a note & photo to my order?

Yes you can, our Build Your Own and Christmas Boxes include a note & photo in the price. If you are purchasing one of our "pre-made" boxes you can add a note and photo for $5 on the cart page.

What sort of paper do you use for the note & photo?

Notes are printed on thick premium paper with a satin finish, all photos are printed on a professional photo machine and are the standard photo size (4" x 6")

Why did you start Down Under Box?

With the Down Under Box, we wanted to make it easy to get your favourite Aussie snacks delivered to you (or a lucky friend) no matter where you are in the world.

Not only does it cost an arm and a leg to send these highly coveted Aussie items overseas, there are tricky customs declaration forms to deal with and plenty of time to be wasted waiting in line at the post office.

With our help, you can send a piece of home to your long distance love, your friend studying abroad, your colleague working on secondment or your child exploring the world. Without breaking the bank and without all the hassle.

Wow. What a great idea for a business… I calculated the box purchase price at retail to be about $11-$13 and sells for $35… or the personalised build-a-box with $9 of items for $45 + $20 delivery.

It just goes to show that there is a business idea there and maybe I can start a similar store, just not talented enough to build a site.

This is also a good idea for a website like bornrich.com - it shows luxury lifestyle items.

    • We have seen this statement pop up a fair bit and it is just not true. Here is our response from the description above:
"I could do this cheaper myself, why would I send a box with you?

In every instance we have seen it has been cheaper (or at the worst case the same cost) to use us than to do it yourself due the very high cost of postage from Australia. On top of that you save quite a bit of time using our service.

      • No need to defend your business model or profit margins. You're being commended on your cleverness and your measure of success should be the numerous positive reactions to your business (and boxes sold of course). Nicely done sir/madam

The difficulty lies in this being a bargain sites, so be prepared for criticism

  • Didn't have to neg me… but ok

Here is an instance for you, and there are so many more so I am suprised that 'In every instance we have seen it cheaper'… You must be joking.

Send the 1kg item via skippy post for $33 as well as the $9 of items and total cost is $42, a saving of $23 from your site and the items are a little bit more customised.

    • I did not neg you, I only replied to you. It is my understanding that the base Skippypost rate that you quoted does not include tracking. Looking at a tracked option to the US that rate jumps to $44 (I am not sure if that also includes the $11 pickup fee so it could be $55). Our standard $20 postage includes tracking and notifications sent throughout the process.

The $9 of items quoted also seems incorrect based on my experience it would be more than this for 1kg of goods.

  • Waste of money.
Compile it yourself, making the selection personal is a better gift.

    • G'day Sage, our Build Your Own option allows you to pick from a large amount of Aussie treats and we also allow a note and photo to be uploaded for us to print and include making it a personalised gift.

  • I'd love to get this, but I refuse to go anywhere near DHL, in my experience, they cannot deliver a package if their life depended on it.

  • Gets a +1 from me for a good product that's value for money IMHO, but also for a well-written post. More new businesses posting on OB should take heed - lots of useful info in the post (including why it's a good deal in the long run).
