PayPal Charged My Bank Account Instead Credit Card

I was booking accommodation on airbnb, and paid using Paypal.

When I checked my bank account a couple days later I realised the funds were taken from my bank account and not my usual credit card.

I had the bank account connected because I had to send money to a friend - which I am fine with.

I checked I had my credit card on preferred payment. Then I looked into the FAQs of Paypal they say pre-authorised payments would be taking out from my bank instead of credit card. I don't understand how airbnb is pre-authorised at all. It is no different from any other online shopping.

Now that the payments are made I probably have zero chance of getting my money back and have it charged on my credit card for all my accommodation.

Anybody had similar issues before?

  • Yeah I got stung with this last month, they have changed their form to not allow you to pick where the money comes from in the last step. You need to pick a default option before you make the transaction. They also use your bank account for backup, where the default option is declined. It will be too hard to get it changed through them and any charge back through your bank will probs kill your paypal account.

    • I'm trying to cancel my bank account and it wouldn't even let me.

Have you checked with your bank? pre-authorised usually means they put aside that amount of money, the money is still technically yours, but you can't access it.

If you want to charge your credit card for the accommodation, maybe you have to wait till your holiday is over, and paid for your accommodation using your CC, and have Airbnb cancel the pre-authorization.

    • Is that how it works? I'll check with my bank and maybe ask airbnb as well.

  • I'm not a fan airbnb as they do their transactions overseas even though they advertise in AUD. I got charged an international transaction fee, thankfully ING was kind enough to reimburse it.

    • It looks like I got charged AUD this time. I'll definitely check my accounts

This is exactly the sort of reason I'm glad my PayPal account isn't linked to my bank account.

    • yep and I regret doing so.

      • I don't know how practical it is for you, but years ago I believe it was and by cancelling my bank account (I was anyway because I was paying $5 month with CBA) I was able to get it removed.

But I understand you may not want to close your bank account just to stop PayPal accessing it.

  • What is the actual problem here? I'm assuming that your bank account ultimately funds your credit card in any event?

      cashflow
      points
      time value of money.

    • Not me in this case, but I would think there's people living pay cheque to pay cheque and wouldn't have enough money to fund their purchases immediately.

  • I made a mistake like this recently - didn't even bother calling Paypal, I didn't think they'd help.

Paypal don't take the money out immediately: i.e. you can stop this at your bank, if the money hasn't come out yet. I called my bank, asked them to block paypal, and paypal then used my CC as backup funding source.

Paypal then removed my bank account permanently because of the issue. After a couple attempts, I got my bank account re-instated.

    • this sounds like a good idea but I only realised a week into booking, and it's already showing up on my bank account.

You've probably selected the incorrect account when paying with Paypal. For years now Paypal used to default to your bank account and I always had to manually select my creditcard at the final step.

That was until recent months where they now allow you to setup a preferred payment method.

I have already set up my preferred payment method as the credit card beforehand.

      • So when you paid what payment source was selected?

        • I don't remember having any options to choose from when I was using airbnb, but I might be wrong.
Anyways the damage is done and I've lost ~$12-13 dollars worth of points?

        • @good grape: You need to talk to Paypal.

        • @CLoSeR:

Yeah I did they haven't responded yet.

  • Recently bought $1500 of stuff through one of the eBay sales
Paying through PayPal forgot to change where I wanted money to come from (my bank account had not been used for 12 months and had $14 lingering in it) but was the method that it defaulted to (my mistake forgetting the choose payment method step)
Noticed immediately and tried to get this changed with PayPal but there's no dice.
They were able to take the $1500 from my bank account (which had $14 in it) putting it into debt which cost me fees, then they bank must have realized something was amiss, and took the money back from PayPal, then I had to settle my PayPal balance (don't believe this generates points when using cc). Funnily enough ended up using the same bank account to settle the balance as is rapidly tried to transfer cash into it after noticing the error.

Long story short, not sure you will have much luck if it's been processed. If you have payments to be competed or pending you will not be able to delete that payment method or swap the payment method based on my experience and calls with them

  • Standard PayPal were no help at all. Took matters into my own hands.

CAll your bank and reverse the charge. That’s what I did, then it charged my credit card.

I dont see the problem. Both are a form of payment. Stop complaining about nothing!

  • There is an option at the last step where they tell you funds are being taken out of "…..XXXX" account and you can manually change by clicking to direct the funds to be taken out of your linked credit card. Do not rely on the preset.

  • I accidentally did this, not with Airbnb though, just a regular eBay purchase. Incredibly annoyed as I thought I had changed my default payment method to my credit card rather than my bank account. Problem solved by contacting the retailer to cancel the order and refund the payment, and re-ordering. Not always this easy though…

  • Sorry to kind of hijack and necropost on this thread but does anybody know if there are any certain differences between using your bank account or MasterCard debit card with PayPal in terms of overdraft or going over your balance.

I know if I try to buy something that costs more than my balance with my bank account it will overdraft it but am not sure what happens if I try to use my debit card.

Am with Westpac on a concession account for the moment.

    Cheers thanks.

  • I just got stung with airbnb. I selected Paypal, expecting to be presented with a form to choose which funding source so I could choose the credit card to use. But it just automatically charged my bank account, and my preferred source in Paypal is a credit card. I can't find anywhere on airbnb or Paypal that allows me to change this. I'll be annoyed if there's a foreign currency fee on my bank account…
