that a pretty good deal, can always use it as portable usb later down the track

    • How?

    • +3

I don't think you can yet. There are no M key USB adapters yet, for PCIe x4 drives. The USB to M.2 adapters on the market at the moment are for (mainly) SATA drives (B key or B+M, which is different to M).

That's not to say adapters won't come out in the future, but I haven't found any yet.

      • It's been a while, a year or two since NvME drives released to the main market. I would very suspect if any manufactures plan to make those adapters if ever..

I bought one earlier today, after my main Sandisk SSD failed in my Home-Server. (it has increased ever so slightly by $5) I tired posting the deal but it was removed for insufficient quantities (7 left of 500gb evo). Glad to see plenty of the 1TB.

Remember folks these are Prosumer Enthusiast Drives, unless your needs demand it, a larger (good brand) SATA SSD may be a better solution.

    • True, but the price difference with a good brand SATA m2 1TB SSD isn't going to be huge… eg Intel 600p, Samsung 850, etc…

      • +2

You're looking about $100 of difference between an 850 and the 960 @ 1TB, so if your already spending $365 it does make sense to pay the little extra if you can afford it and get a NVMe at these prices. But still it's a lot of money if you don't make use of it. At the very least you're future-proofing.

BTW: Intel 600p is NVMe (albeit a very poor performer in anything but light workloads.)

        • Australia is considered one of the top country's that over specs their PC.

I won't be moving from sata SSD any time soon… is that extra speed Gona be worth $100 in what I do with the PC, I doubt it.

Every time I read "future proofing" I just wanna slap people, why spend a extra 1-200 on a bigger graphics card now, spend 2-300 now 2-300 in 2 years and flip the old card for 40% original on ebay. You will likely get better proformance card works out cheaper usualy.

        • @Slippery Fish: Source?

        • -1

@nobarginsarehere: read it somewhere years ago, doubt I could find it now. So take it as anticdotal as I CBF looking.

        • @Slippery Fish: Sounds like pure BS to me haha

        • -1

@nobarginsarehere: and the world is flat, given alot of PC's are used for simple browsing ect and even the gaming PC's are rarely used to their potential it seemed plausible at the time to me and still does, it was most likely something posted on the pcpp forums years ago.

I dare say the PC or phone your using to post your comments that are intended to be a go at me about this are being under utilised for what your doing atm

        • @Slippery Fish: Yes a lot of PCs are used purely for web browsing
But you said we are the number #1 overspeccers of the world, sounds like bullshit so I wanted a source

Without a source you are just spreading misinformation. I've tried googling for this "study" you "seen", no luck.

          So it's all bullshit.

Talking about my PC, it is very well specced and used for gaming and work (VMs etc)
The graphics card regularly sits at 90-100% and the CPU 50-70%

Just because you use your PC like a washing machine or microwave doesnt mean all people do, especially if it's their job

@nobarginsarehere: haha I got my reaction, but honestly I believe it was on pcpp so if you can search that forum then get back to me with the proof then thanks.

@Slippery Fish: You said something stupid and pass it off as trying to get a reaction, gg

Oh man that's tempting AF. I'm glad the m2's are already at 1TB. We might actually see some progress in size this gen.

    • +2

      Samsung do a 2TB M.2 as well

  • They may not have stock of any of the items by tomorrow. Ozbargainers are buying all.

    • +3

They may not have much stock in 30 minutes with Ozbargain on the case.

  • Would this work in an old Sony Vaio Pro 13 model number SVP13219PGB? I know it takes an M2 drive but NVMe was not around when it was built. Current card is a 256GB Samsung MZHPU256HCGL-0000

      go to this site, http://www.crucial.com
and it will tell you what SSD you can update , either 2280 or maybe only the smaller one

      • Looks like I'm out of luck. It will have to be AHCI not NVMe

Can anybody recommend a specific 512gb ssd that's currently a great deal? I've got a 128gb in my laptop. I can only have two games installed on it at a time! I'd get the one in this deal, however it seems like it might be overkill considering it's only going to be used for gaming.

    • +4

850evo or Intel 545s are the best respectable SATA drives currently.

Not sure if you're after M2 form factor or 2.5". You can source a 2.5" 500gb Samsung 850 evo model from here for $184 with PREZZY discount:

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-MZ-75E500BW-850-EVO-500G…

      • Thanks for the response. I'm actually not sure which I should upgrade. I have a 128gb M2 SSD, and a 1TB HDD. Initially I was thinking to replace the M2 SSD with a bigger one, but now I'm thinking just replacing the 1TB drive.

        • +1

HDDs are fragile, loud and power hungry and aren't really suited in a mobile platform. If you can afford to, replacing the HDD is a nice plan as it results in less noise, more durability and better battery life for your laptop. But then again a 1tb ssd is pretty expensive.

        • I have a 8400evo in my PC, it's quite snappy

  • +2

Needed a new m.2 ssd for my future build. Thanks!

  • Samsung 960 Evo M.2 500GB is out of stock.

  • Someone bought 14 500GB SSDs back in September lol.

  • +2

Good to see austincomputers playing nice this sale, i just bought some WD reds for a fair price.

    • +2

Checked again today they have increased price on most of their items. Lucky I bought what I needed already!

    • +1

Have seen some price jacking and cancelling since this comment, I retract my statement.

      • I figured this would happen, pity, I'm in need of an upgrade as my 256Gb SSD isn't big enough. Will be waiting for the next round of sales and hopefully grab one before the price hikes next time.

  • Have the 1tb in my X1 Carbon. Great drive.

  • Great deal but wish these Austin Computers deals didn't sell out so fast. Couple things I've missed. Fingers crossed they can restock these.

  • How much was the 500gb selling for after the discount guys?

    • It was $262.16.

They're back in stock but prices are bumped up to $293.48 after discount.

      • Damn that was a good price. Thanks Gene
