  • I wonder if this will be as rushed as the IQ3 release

    • Have they got it right yet?

      • No, they force hard resets of the IQ3 every couple of days in the middle of the night.

        • +1

          lol.

    'Foxtel' Nah,keep it!

  • Does this stream live foxtel? Would love F1 in 4k.

    • +2

Yeah, unless it can stream Foxtel in 4k it's not worth it, give us Fox Sports in 4k at least

    • It does - but in HD.

      • +1

I'm not sure it does, live Foxtel tv is 72
        0p

        • +2

Yeah they class 720p as HD - like "HD Ready" TVs but not "Full HD" which is 1080p.

  • Wonder how long till you can sideload Netflix. Great idea .. but stupid lockdown by an aging business.

    • +1

You won't find Netflix on Foxtel Now Box, but the inclusion of Google Chromecast means you can still access the app - and watch your favourite Netflix shows - on your TV through the device.

      • Yeah read that. Not as seamless as a nice icon and browsing though.

      • +4

Funny Foxtel encourages to use chromecast but blocks it on their AFL app to stream to the chromecast

        • Foxtel doesn't have an AFL app.

You access their footy channel via Foxtel Go

        • @jv: Telstra actually.

        • @Jimmy007:

          Telstra actually.

Why don't you just view it on Foxtel?

        • @jv: Free streaming and live pass on mobile

        • +1

          @Jimmy007:

Free streaming and live pass on mobile

yes but the AFL have limited it to a 7" screen maximum.

The absence of Netflix according to this article https://ausdroid.net/2017/11/08/foxtels-100-foxtel-now-box-g… seems to be with Netflix approving the device so that it is listed as compatible on Google Play.

Hopefully this is simply a matter of Netflix doing a bit of testing and they can flip the switch to mark it as compatible. Unless there are bugs see no reason why Netflix would not want their app to be available on the Foxtel Now box.

"Foxtel seems to be laying the blame for this at Netflix’s feet, saying they’re happy to have the app on the Foxtel Now Box but that it’s Netflix’s responsibility to release the app. They also say the two companies are in discussions."

Unless it has dramatically improved in the last couple of months there android app is woeful. Constant crashes, episodes randomly stop and won't restart, sound drops for no reason. Tried it on 3 different android devices and had a fairly consistent experience.

At least you will have Stan, so when you get the shits with Foxtels app, you can stream something through it.

  • Does anyone know how it's powered? Does it need plugging into the wall or will USB suffice?

    • -1

      Powered via a 12v 1a barrel

  • Am interested to see how their Chromecast implementation fairs - it's normally sketchy at best on non-Google hardware…

    • example? works flawlessly on mi box 3's.

      • A few I know about:

        • Stan - have heard of the odd case of it working, but munted for the majority - doesn't work at all for me on the Mi Box
        • Foxtel Now - some have got it working for catch-up / anytime, but haven't heard of anyone getting it to work for linear channels - doesn't work at all for me
        • Optus Sport - haven't heard of anyone getting it work on the Mi Box or Shield
  • If its running android tv do you reckon you would be able to also put kodi on it?

  • Can you get the free Sky News stream on this without being a Foxtel subscriber?

    • +1

Nope, you must login to access any of the streams

      • Thanks for your reply. I don't suppose it's possible to get a Foxtel login without being a paid subscriber?

        • +1

Not sure, I too wonder if you can do that.

        • +1

From the Foxtel website it reads as though you can have a Foxtel Now log in without an active subscription.

        • +1

@sween64: Thank you, you are correct.

          From Foxtel Now box FAQs:
