No International Txn Fees + Fee Free ATM Withdrawals Worldwide for ING Orange Everyday and Orange One with $1000 Deposit/mth

30022

Edit: It looks like with the changes coming up in March 2018, ATMs will no longer be free unless you make 5+ card purchase per month, in addition to depositing $1,000+ per month (Shame on you, ING - I'll be moving banks)

No ING international transaction fees when you travel or shop with overseas retailers

In addition to free ATMs in Australia, we’ll rebate the ATM fee within five business days at any ATM around the world (the Orange One cash advance fee still applies).

This is applicable when you:

Deposit your pay of $1,000 or more every month, and

From March 2018, also make 5+ card purchases every month using your Orange Everyday or Orange One (excluding ATM withdrawals, balance enquiries, cash advances, EFTPOS cash-out only transactions)

  • I forgot that I have an ING account, can't remember where my debit card is.

  • +2

So if I make the 5+ card purchases in March, and then go overseas for the months of April and May only the month of April will have the no international transaction fees and ATM fee rebates. Good only for those people going overseas for a month.

  • The 50c rebate from withdrawing from supermarkets with the orange everyday still works so I will keep the card along with Macquarie one for the same reason.

  • +5

Downvote due to painful 5 Trans per month
( just transferred 20k out of ING)

    ( Already have a Citibank card )

  • If they are going to rebate the ATM fee, it's going to be a good card for Thailand.

  • +6

ING trying to pass this off as an improvement, while really they're making it worse (and trying to hide it) by adding the "5+ transactions on card per month" requirement. At a time when all major bank ATMs no longer charge withdrawal fees, this is a bad move. There are better existing options out there for fee-free overseas spending and ATM withdrawals. ING have become a joke and I will be moving away by March 2018. The unique benefits have dwindled down to:

    • Fee-free ATM withdrawals at private ATMs (pub, liquor stores, random convenience stores, Crown Casino etc).
    • That's it.
  • +7

This is clearly ING's way of admitting their credit card roll out has been an unmitigated disaster and failed to get any traction in the credit card marketplace. Not at all surprising since the Orange One offers nothing more than any other fee free credit card and comes with an annual fee. Having seen the disappointing take up of their useless credit card, they're now trying to blackmail their customers into taking one instead by taking away their Savings Maximiser bonus interest and making the Orange Everyday debit card impossibly onerous to use by putting flaming hoops up you have to jump through 5 times a month.

As everyone has already worked out within hours of the announcement launch e-mail, this "deal" has a massive sting in the tail that is far worse than the supposed benefits are. People will see straight through this and abandon ING even more as a result. Nothing's changed in reality. The 28°/Citibank Plus combo remains the go-to solution for purchasing/ATM overseas. All this will hopefully do, is wake up the rest of ING's customers to the fact that UBank+RAMs offer better interest and a better overall transaction banking solution and cause them to empty their Savings Maximisers to zero.

    • -3

Using a card 5 times is hardly flaming hoops…

      • +6

It is if you currently never use it, and get points on other cards

  • Who can tell me is this offer better or 28degree? ING OE or 28degree card better for oversea transaction? or else

    • The Orange One is a credit card with an annual fee, the 28° is fee free. You work it out.

    • +1

28D is a credit card with up to 55 days interest free, OE is a Visa debit card, if that makes any difference to you.
However, the ING you have to jump through hoops to get fee free international transactions but does include cash withdrawals unlike 28D.

They are both fee free, get both, just remember to keep enough cash in the OE account if you plan to use it.
I had the odd few places on holiday where the 28D didn't work, so it's good to have a backup.

  • Seems good to me, I use this as my everyday splurge spend account so easily make 5 purchases a month and get my salary deposited in the account. So effectively no change except with the added benefit of fee free foreign ATM use and no international transaction fees.

    For mine… excellent change!

  • My questions is about their exchange rate.
Is anyone can find about their exchange rate real time?
I just want to compare it with citibank

    Thank you

    • +3

If you have an existing Citibank card that's still operating on VISA, then there's no difference at all since VISA is the scheme handling the exchange rate in both cases. If you have a newer MasterCard Citibank card then there will be a difference but it will be so insignificant that you can safely ignore it. It will equate to a small fraction of a cent for most normal purchases and sometimes it will be in the favour of MasterCard and at other times will be in the favour of VISA and there's no way you can know in advance which will be better for you. MasterCard use an exchange rate on the exact day of the purchase you make, while VISA have a think about it for a day and use an exchange rate number on the day after the day of purchase. The difference in the exchange rate days is the cause of the difference between VISA & MasterCard processing rates, but for your personal banking purposes as a retail banking customer, you can safely think of them as being the same.

thanks op for the info. But i love my ing…. :'''(
should still be good for me and i use ing as my main card, so i do easy 5 trans /month but yeh its a shite that they're putting restrictions. ME bank i will have to investigate. maybe open up and have a backup just in case.

  • +2

    5+ card purchase per month

  • +2

This is the last straw. I will finally move all my saving back to RAMS. But logistically it's harder to pay the monthly credit card as you can't withdraw from RAMS.

    • Open an AMP Bett3r account. Interest rate of 3.00% p.a. The only requirement is a monthly $2000 deposit. You can withdraw as much as you like.

  • -4

You do realise that the idea could be to wheedle out the customers that don’t use ING as their main bank. You are probably saving the bank money by switching out if you only used it to park funds. The offer is to reward customer that use their account as the main one or to encourage it. Which is a fair quid pro quo scenario to me.

    • +5

Since when do banks not want your money in their hands?

    • Banks want all the money they can get. They profit from lending out at higher rates.

    • Misguided comment that assumes banks only want to lend & transact. “Parking funds” is a fundamental reason why banks exist at all.

      • Misguided comment …

Obviously, ING’s actuaries missed that Finance 101 class ‘cause offloading clients parking funds is the obvious result of this policy change. You set them straight.

  • +1

I was really excited when I read the first few sentence of the email, then stumped upon saving account requirement. FK ING, I wish to move my fund now, but let's see if I could find another better bank with no bullshit requirements. ING now completely lost me.

  • +1

    Hmmm.
Now time to look for a new everyday bank.

    Any recommendations?

Already have a separate CC, and Loan accounts setup.

    Thanks

  • I use ING as my backup, in case I forget my credit card. I see talk about the Bankwest Zero Mastercard with no fees. So Ozbargainers put all their everyday spending on the Zero card & then pay it off in full? I see the zero card is also free & has free overseas transactions (good for Ali Express & for buying Bitcoin) but ING will be doing the same as well. Can anyone suggest a credit card out there for a low spender (or ozb-saver)? I don't spend more than $2k pm on my credit card.

    • +1

Have a read of our credit card guide. Personally I use the following cards:

      • Main card: Amex Platinum Edge (for the points)
      • Backup card: Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard (for travel, international transactions and where Amex isn't accepted)

I use my credit cards for all purchases so that my money is sitting in my savings earning interest. I pay it off in full on the due date.

      • You use the points to buy flight tickets? I was going to use the coles master card for the flybuys points but looks like Amex will work out better in the long run.

        • +1

I haven't used my points for anything as of yet but I'm thinking of two options when the time comes around:

          • Buying flight tickets
          • Selling/gifting the points to a buyer (I think the rate is 1.2c/pt?)
  • +6

Would have given this a plus vote if the 5 withdrawals were only necessary for getting foreign ATM fee refunds. But overall this is a significant extra hassle for a very occasional benefit.

    • That was what I (mistakenly) thought at first - that the 5 purchases are only necessary for the no foreign trans/ATM fees. Turns out they are required for the savings bonus as well.

  • +5

ING bad..low interest..useless no ATM fee…made millions when other banks stopped charging fees but ING didn't return the benefits to card holders

  • +2

I’ll be moving from ING. Clearly a strategy of theirs to try and consolidate their customer base around people who use them as their main bank.

As others have said, CBA Amex is a good option for OS transactions with recent changes. No fees and you earn points (unlike 28 degrees)

    • But the CBA Amex is a Diamond card, not everyone can get it, this is ING debit card and most people can get it easily.

    • Consider using DiviPay as a way to both earn points and have international transaction fees waived.

  • +3

Someone might have suggested it, but people who do have accounts now should give some negative feedback on the 5+ transactions. It might not work, but enough people complain they could change their minds on this requirement.

    • +1

      Already done!

    • +1

      Done

    • Link pls?

      • I did mine via the app. So if you do it via the app just go into the mailbox > click on the + > and select complaint under subject and write the message.

  • +2

This "enhancement" stinks. So many hoops to jump through to get mediocre interest. Goodbye ING.

  • +3

This offer doesn't disclose all fees.

    Cards - free
ATM fee - free if you meet conditions, otherwise $2.50 in Oz and OS
Cash advance fee - always greater of $2 or 2% in Oz and OS
Foreign transaction fee - free if you meet conditions, otherwise 2.5%
Foreign conversion fee - always 2.5%
Overdraft fee - always 10% if you exceed DC deposit or CC limit + interest rate of 15%
Interest rate on CC purchases or cash advances - always 15% compared to 28D 22%. Doesn't say whether they prohibit positive balance like 28D.
CC has Late payment fee - always $20
Doesn't say how they make conversions (foreign to US to Oz or foreign to Oz like 28D did; don't know whether they still do) and what exchange rate they use (Visa/Mastercard rate like 28D and CB or their own dodgy rate like some other banks and especially cash cards.

Interest on deposits - 2.8% pa if you meet conditions. Otherwise 1.35%
    Conditions
    Must deposit $1000 per month
Must make 5+ transactions per month from March 2018

    • +2

Foreign conversion fee is waived off as well if you make the 5+ transaction according to the T & Cs of email I received.

    • Even that's got more hoops now. Used to be open OE and Savings account, deposit $1000, get $100.
Now they've tacked on the minimum 5 purchases with OE card to it as well.

  • +1

This requirement of 5+ transactions is a deal breaker as I used ING for ATM withdrawals only.

    • +1

If I am forced to use the ING card, I guess you could always put 5x $0.01 split payment at Coles.

      • What are we supposed to do once overseas?

Sounds stupid this requirement for 5 transactions.

        • I think I can manage 5 transaction per month on the ING card while overseas. Especially since the international transaction fee is waived under this offer.

  • Funny they didn't advertise this with the recent base rate drop, down from 1.50% to 1.35%. Will be interesting to see how this plays out for them as it seems they'll be losing a few customers.

  • +1

ING does not have unique selling point or a unique offering among competitors anymore. It was a good journey with ING which will end soon for me now.

    • What do you mean? Which of the other banks have no international transaction fees and no international atm fees along with Apple Pay?

Macquarie bank is closest and their everyday account is really good but their interest rates are lower and it doesn’t include free international atm withdrawals.

Citibank has no international transaction fees but international atm fees aren’t free everywhere, only at select atms in select countries. You have to do research as to where you can withdraw for free. In Thailand for example there’s only 1 or 2 in the whole country. It’s not convenient.

Also no Apple Pay. Plus if you’ve ever held a Citibank account you’d know that their mobile app and online banking aren’t good.

      • +1

Most countries have easy-to-find ATMs which have no charges for Citibank cards.

I recently travelled to eleven different countries and the only countries where I got charged were Thailand and Laos. If you travel to those specific countries regularly (or the few others that charge fees) this change is helpful, but for the vast majority of customers it is a downgrade.

  • got an email. not sure it mean $100for both, or 50/50 ?

  • I checked with ING. The 5 transfers can be broken down into 5x1 for a $5 purchase. Personally ill do a self checkout and pa6 like 0.1 x 5 to qualify.

    • +1

Personally ill do a self checkout and pa6 like 0.1 x 5 to qualify.

      $0.09 too much? :P

      You could just do $0.01 x 5!

      • What do you do when overseas?

  • While no international fees is nice, they shouldn't take away existing features, or lock them behind more conditions like making 5 purchases a month! I know you can make several 0.01 purchases, but the hassle makes it almost not worth it. Seriously considering changing banks.

    • Why "shouldn't" they though? Because customers like me and you lose out..?

      • Because we joined due to their specific offer, which is worsening and more effort / work.

  • After further review, I have three questions / comments.

    1. Is it possible to pay a bill 'one cent at a time's each month - 5 cents?

    2. When will this change? Note previously they said no ATM fees, now conditions added…

    3. Will the $.50 bonus be credited once $200 + withdrawn from EFTPOS?

On the bottom of this email it says "This offer may be changed or withdrawn at any time at ING's sole discretion", so be warned.

  • How about cash out bonus, also need 5 times of card use?

  • ING is gone, really no point in being with them anymore.

All major benefits are gone, their staff is not as good as before (rude, stressed out, long waiting times, inaccurate information, etc, etc.) plus they seem to have learnt all the bad-sneaky ways of the major banks (they been sneakily reducing benefits and applying lazy tax where they can).

I'm already with another bank and couldnt be happier. With ING I had to constantly watch my back to avoid being ripped-off or at the very least to have a barely competitive deal

    RIP ING

    • Hello,

Which other bank are you with?

  • why is this deal so good? (Is it being hyped up by the referrers?)

Don't I get the same with a Citibank Plus transaction account and a Citibank signature credit card?

… And I don't need to deposit my pay or make set number of transactions?

    • I voted +, then read what the conditions really are, and now revoked my vote.

      Wish I could vote negative!

  • +2

I went and revoked my vote for ING in this poll: Poll: Best Australian Transaction Bank Accounts in 2017. For me, the requirement for 5+ card transactions means it is no longer the best transaction account. Of course, this condition does not come into effect until March, and poll is about 2017. Still … Thought I'd mention, in case others feel the same, and want to do likewise.

  • +1

ING are honestly the best bank, never had an issue, their savings interest rates are better than most other (nearly rivalling Rams) and their app is pretty good.

Just recently received the refer a friend for $100 each offer the other day. Sure it now requires 5 purchases but surely that's pretty easy to manage as you have to deposit $1k anyway.

In my mind it's a pretty easy choice.

  • Will there be no transaction charge for making online payment on international retailers' websites in other currencies too?

  • 5x taps is a real pain, sadly after almost 8 years with ING, its time to say goodbye

  • so if ING is not the best high interest bank around, which one do we recommend in this community?

    • Ubank over AMP, ME or Rams for my needs.

  • Idiots. What use is it for traveling if you need to be in the country making purchases all the time?!?!

    Cya ING.

    • +1

While I agree that the offer is not a good one (mainly because all the hoops you have to jump through and slightly ambiguous wording mean I'd never be sure if I was going to be charged a fee or not until after I'd made the purchase and the fee was/wasn't charged), but…:

      • the T&C's don't state anything about where the purchases are made. Presumably any purchases made while you were travelling would also count (not sure about you, but I put loads of stuff on my credit card when travelling o/s - depending on destination, I guess)
      • the offer applies for the month that follows the one in which the 5 purchase have been made, so theoretically you could make purchase in Aus, then travel the next month.
  • I'm quite disappointed by the 5+ transactions to get free ATM withdrawals (since I would rather acquire points on my credit card for purchases) so was thinking of looking around for another bank as my everyday bank account.

However I have an ING home loan, and looks as though the 5+ transactions isn't required if you have an ING home loan. Not sure if other people here with ING Home Loans are aware of this.

    Australian ATM Fee Rebate
Offer will apply for the next calendar month when you perform the following during the current calendar month:
deposit at least $1,000 from an external bank account to any personal ING account in your name (excluding Living Super and Orange One), and from 1 March 2018, also make at least 5 card purchases using your ING debit or credit card (excluding ATM withdrawals, balance enquiries, cash advances and EFTPOS cash out only transactions).

Australian ATM fee rebate for ING home loan customers
Offer applies for ATM transactions in Australia where you or your joint account holder has an ING home loan

Also for everyone else, while this is not ideal, if you use one of the big four bank's ATM's then isn't it already free? Didn't they all remove their foreign ATM fees?

  • +2

Regarding the required 5+ card purchases p/m…

    • From ING reply email today:
"Online payments can count however they need to be debited from the card, so if you pay your council rates via BPAY this wouldn't count. Any payment, purchase or debit form the card number will count and at this stage there is no minimum spend amount per transaction. The conditions are still subject to change at any time for all customers."

So now to engage brain, what can I pay $1 60 times a year. Any ideas anyone? Rates and gas bill don't look possible.

  • +1

Can anyone suggest how we could automate the 5+ card purchases per month.

I have as a suggestion for my situation, I believe Tpg PAYG costs $1 p/m and can be paid monthly by direct debit from a card.
Aussiefarmers might be used for >$25 (for free delivery) of snacks once a week, delivered after midnight without attendance. Thus a weekly scheduled $30 deposit from ING savings to transaction account, would automate the 5 transactions needed.

I've tried bills etc, nothing works automatically, so the above is the best I can do so far.
Looking for generic ideas for everyone ??

    • Would like this too - am often abroad for stretches at a time so this new requirement is pretty dreadful!

      • +2

Get a card that doesn't make you jump through hoops.

  • Silly question but does it matter if you select savings or credit while using this card overseas? The $1000 and 5 transactions has already been done last month.

    Cheers

    • A few days ago I tried using my ING Orange at an overseas ATM for the first time. It's definitely Savings that you choose.

On a separate note, is it possible to pay off a credit card using your ING account and clock up 5 transactions that way?

      • Does this fall under cash advances cuz they are not eligible. Interested to know too.

  • Seems that holding a home loan makes you exempt from the 5+ taps for fee-free international transactions and ATMs.

    https://campaigns.ing.com.au/unlock

Thats a win - only wish I hadn't been so proactive with my taps this month!

  • Are opal transactions counted towards the 5 transactions?
