I've always wondered if this is legit or just a money grab. Any mechanics/chemical engineers that can give their 2c?

Not qualified to say, but my in my experience it definitely flushes a whole lot of sludge out that wouldn't otherwise. It's a cheap time to try it, and a reputable and Aussie brand too.

Local Kmart Tyre & Auto charged me $100 to do this once - they recommended to do it as there was a lot of carbon buildup.. now you can do it yourself for less than $7 and 15 minutes of your time.

    • If you have an relatively old car then don't bother unless you want to enter the hell of oil leak.

  • I used this stuff regularly when doing oil changes on old engines, until a reputable mechanic told me it can do more harm than good as it can strip away lubricants to metal parts. No idea if he is correct but I wasn't going to risk a $1000 engine on a $10 "wonder" product

Engineer here. Yes that is correct. This is product is a mixture of detergents and solvents. The risk is if is not completely removed from the engine it may reduce the lubricant capacity of the new oil.
Good quality oils have detergents that reduce the deposit of any undesirable solids anyways.
I use this product often to clean hydraulic systems, but not engines.

      • Well there you go, thanks for confirming it's not advisable to use this stuff on engines no matter if they're giving it away!

Much better putting the $6.49 towards a better oil / earlier oil change intervals.

  • I've been told that these work, but sadly the bits that get loose can block the oil galleries, causing oil starvation to various engine bits.
