    12v with hammer..

12V = 3 cells, so 10.8V really, compared to 5-cell 18V that is standard now.

the result is 25Nm torque compared to 40Nm for the Ryobi. And 10mm vs 13mm chuck, so those 1/2" bits are out.
Its going to be a bit slower in hammer mode, but for occasional use will likely do the job.

But $50 with 2 batteries and fast charge? Bargain!
Anyone who does not already have a cordless drill should get one.

    • Thanks for this info. Really important stuff if you didn't already know it.

Slightly lower specced than others but can do the job and is easy on the wallet!

    • Thanks fot the info. Can you suggest if any alternative in this price range?

    • The Ryobi brushless hammer drill is even 85Nm!!

  • I posted the 18v Rockwell brushless hammer drill 2x li ion batteries, 13mm metal chuck recently for $69 from supercheap. Might be 20% off today? Listed as 30Nm, Box says 40Nm, but its got more grunt than my Aldi 24v Titanium. So I recon it's probably 60Nm.

    • Is impact the same as hammer?

You are right it looks better specced.

It is currently $67.90 until 19th.

Impact and hammer are words with similar meaning in plain english, but they are generally used to refer to different categories of electric tool.

Impact drivers typically have a hex chuck and are mainly for driving screws.

See this short video explaining what an impact driver is

    • You could also get the Rockwell ShopSeries Drill & Impact Driver Kit - 18 Volt Li-Ion $80

So you get a drill and impact driver for $80

      • Does it come with drill bit? I can't see in photos.

      • Not that the Rockwell kit does not include a hammer drill function.

Never been a big fan of Impact Drills or Drills with Hammer Action - with the limited ones I've tried, they're loud and painfully slow at drilling and hammering.

I prefer them separately - one cordless drill, and one hammer drill.

You should get a rotary hammer drill - on masonry it’s like a knife through butter

      • Yep I ended up buying a Metabo Hammer Drill and it was bloody amazing! :)

I was drilling a 5mm hole into brick - used an impact drill with hammer action and barely made a scratch for like 5 minutes.

Hammer drill - done in 10 seconds.

        • +1

Normal clay brick? hammer drill should do a 5mm hole easily, and the rotary hammer in 2 seconds, not ten.

If you are drilling concrete, I'd expect what you describe. Maybe your bit was no good.

        • @manic:
Clay brick, same Sutton drill bit, was drilling slowly, and will carry a stop watch with me next time I drill rolls eyes

        • @meetspin:
          OK. Well, something was wrong.
I use a cordless hammer drill in brick frequently.
Only bother getting out the rotary hammer for big jobs like putting a pipe through the wall.

Sometimes it barely makes a dent, until I realise I forgot to switch it to hammer mode.

        • @manic: sometimes when i wee, it takes 2 seconds, but sometimes it takes 10 seconds. It depends how much liquid i've consumed prior to taking a wee.

12 v ok for a screwdriver but I would reccomend at least 18v for a hammer/impact driver. Cheap though

  • +1

12V would be absolutely useless & an utter waste of money for a hammer drill
    It would not drill masonry

I used a Ryobi 9.6 cordless drill for probably 10 years and it was fine for most jobs, used it till the battery died, I recently rebuilt the battery pack lol :) and it lives again but the little bosch green drills I have are insanely good.

For $50 you cant really go wrong.

  • Depends where the 12v comes from - these are good to "hack" for camping, a mate has done this to an old Makita 12v drill with a 200AH AGM battery and it is surprisingly effective. Probably because it's getting more like 12.7v :)

    • All totally different. This is Li-Ion. Its not just the motor voltage that matters. How much torque & power do you think a 12V car starter-motor puts out?
