Sony Headphones MDR-500SL $39.99 + $5.99P&H (RRP $129.95) From 1-day.com.au [ends Thu 17 Nov]

30

Hey everyone,

Thought this is quite a good price for pretty decent Sony in-ear earphones from 1-day.com.au for $39.99 + $5.99P&H (RRP $129.95).

I have something pretty similar to these and the quality is great - great bass, isolation, clarity and little distortion in sound quality all round. Also been through the washing machine TWICE (left them in the pockets and forget to take them out) and they still work fine! lol so pretty reliable ;)

Let us know your thoughts.

Don't hate, appreciate ;)

Cheers.

    Aren't these earphones, not headphones?

  • In-earphones actually.

  • is this site creditworthy? cuz this price is too good to be true

believe it or not they are. i've bought i few items from them in the past and they do actually get delivered lol

  • Just something I noticed was the cord length, the standard cord length for ear phones is about 1.2m to 1.0m. This product has a cord length of .60m.

There is nothing wrong with that as one may prefer shorter length cords for arm bands and clip on MP3 players.

Just something to be aware of for those who put their MP3's into their pocket like me. Can also be easily mitigated by using an extension cord.

    • Thanks for pointing that out. I've had a pair of MDR-EX300's and was keen on upgrading. Does the L stand for Lanyard? The pictures are vague.

edit: On second look, mine are also 0.6m, but they came with a 0.9m extension cable. The packaging on the site looks fake though, can anyone confirm these are legit?

  • I need some new headphones, but can't find any reviews for these!

    • Googling "MDR-500SL" returns this exact page and 1-Day's page.

The closest model looks to be Sony MDR-EX500SL I think, but looks to be made obsolete by MDR-EX500LP.

No reviews, means no sale for me.. unless I can try them somewhere. But the lack of readily available info is a tip to steer clear.

      • If you take a close look at the box when you zoom the photo you will see that they are indeed MDR-EX500SL which is the short lead (SL) version of the MDR-EX500 model - it should come with an extension lead for those who want to carry their player in a cargo pocket.

  • Can anyone read Chinese or whatever language this is in - http://kc18.com/shop/goods/400

It seems to have a comparison of fake and real earphones, by the pictures, the 1day phones look fake. Maybe someone with a sharper eye can tell.

Not a word for word translation, I've cut out what I think is superfluous or vague.

(In order of photos going down)

      1. The picture on the right is fake. The red circle is pointing out that fakes lack a visible warranty card/sticker on the packaging.

      2. Also a genuine warranty card will have the phone numbers of Hong Kong/Macau (in this context - official domestic Sony-licensed) warranty service centres.

      3. Original packaging will have a matte texture. Text is very clear. Fake packaging will have a black-grey blended texture, note the "tiny white dots" effect in the picture.

      4. There are two obvious holes in the genuine earphone container. The fake container is often scarred (cheap plastic) and easily warped.

      5. On genuine cord-wraps, the material is bouncy (you can press into it and it will return to normal shape) and there is a number (see the upside down #2). On fakes, it is soft and there is no bounciness.

      6. The genuine leather case is genuine leather. The SONY logo looks perfect. For fakes it will be fake leather and the SONY logo will look wrong.

7 & 8. A discussion on the quality of the material on the exterior of the earbuds. Basically genuine has a better "feel" and some random talk about CD lines that I dont understand. (I think the differences pointed out are graphically minor and difficult to spot). Use the pictures to compare genuine (left) and fake (right).

      • I noticed those too. What do you think the 1day deal is? It's packaging doesn't have that sticker, but the lighting makes it hard to notice the smooth matte texture, and in some places it looks like it has the white dots.

Google searches only lead me to fake earphones when they have that packaging. One seller admitted they were "not original" but "quality earphones made in China".

I'm hesitant to spend $40 on fake earphones, especially when I just purchased some Sennheiser CX300's.

        • Why do you need more earphones when you already have the Sennies? Avoid fakes mate, the sound and build quality is never gonna be great and will probably break down easier. Not worth $20, let alone $46.

      • I don't trust google's translations for starters, but if you didn't notice, the text which needs translating is on images. It didn't translate anything useful.

Esq - The Sennies haven't arrived yet, and I prefer Sony earphones (they are more comfortable). I've grown fond of the large diameter earpieces which stick out. Sennheiser and other normal earphones just feel uncomfortable now (I'll probably get used to them). The EX500's are apparently better quality than the CX300's as well. I've bought a few things from 1day and they have all been legit, so this deal is confusing.

  • As for 1-day sale ive used them a fair bit for some decent products. Just as a thought they mave have done a quick google search for an iimage and came up with a fake image =P

All the comments in this thread scream out: do not buy.

  • Thanks for the heads up - I have purchased a number of items from this site (which I believe is in New Zealand) and have not had any problems with them. Now I will see how I go with this rather than panicking because of a simple discussion re fakes :)

  • no review = steer clear for me.

but to be honest, according to the chinese website comparison, the ones sold here does seem to be the fake ones, look at the rings, the genuine ones seem to be deeper while while the fake ones are really shallow.

  • These look like something out of star trek

  • I have just received my order from 1-Day.com.

It would be hard to be more pleased with my buy.

    Results of careful examination are:

1.The picture on the right is fake. The red circle is pointing out that fakes lack a visible warranty card/sticker on the packaging.

Not a HK purchase so sticker would be invalid

2.Also a genuine warranty card will have the phone numbers of Hong Kong/Macau (in this context - official domestic Sony-licensed) warranty service centres.

Not a HK purchase so sticker would be invalid

3.Original packaging will have a matte texture. Text is very clear. Fake packaging will have a black-grey blended texture, note the “tiny white dots” effect in the picture.

Packing is matte black and has no "spottiness" and the printing is sharp and clear.

4.There are two obvious holes in the genuine earphone container. The fake container is often scarred (cheap plastic) and easily warped.

The container tray is sturdy and it has the 'genuine' holes

5.On genuine cord-wraps, the material is bouncy (you can press into it and it will return to normal shape) and there is a number (see the upside down #2). On fakes, it is soft and there is no bounciness.

The cordwrap is bouncy and has the mould number as in the original

6.The genuine leather case is genuine leather. The SONY logo looks perfect. For fakes it will be fake leather and the SONY logo will look wrong.

The case is identical to the image on the site and the logo on the case is identical to the image and the plastic internal tray logo is also correct.

Image 7 - The surface textures and groove depth are identical to the 'genuine' image.

Image 8 - the earpiece adapter mount is identical in texture and form to the 'genuine' image. Also, the rear port slot is tucked under the cord entry as in the 'genuine' image rather than at the top in the fake

Finally - the ear adaptors have the Hybrid construction and the instruction sheet is professionally printed.

I am satisfied that they are genuine :)

    Ozzie

    • But.. do they sound good?

      • Yup - clear, sensitive and— good ambient blocking
