  • Is this grinder any good? Worth it if I just use an Aeropress or should I just go a hand grinder?

    • +3

From all the reports I’ve heard of, this grinder is amazing.

      • Best sub $300 you can buy.

Mine has devoped a faulty hopper switch after many years so thinks hopper is closed sometimes but would buy same grinder again …..

    • I recently bought one of these (for $105 from the factory seconds store near Pyrnont 😀) to use with my aero press, and I’m very happy with it. Had I not got it there I’d be buying it from this deal.

      • $105. Only more?

        • I got the last one they had that day (no box even), but it’s worth giving them a call and asking.

        • @thepatrick:
          Thanks.

    • Use it every morning with an aeropress and it's a great grinder. The difference is time when comparing it to hand grinder, takes about 90-120 seconds of light manual labour to hand grind your coffee, or 1 button press and 6 seconds of waiting with the Breville. A "make your own coffee" habit is easier to achieve if it's two minutes quicker.

Have had mine for 3 years and still has not missed a beat, used 3-4 times a day.

    • I have this and use it with my Breville Dual Boiler, it's awesome!

    • Definitely. I use one with my Aeropress every day. Getting a much more consistent cup than I was getting with pre-ground beans.

    • If you want a hand grinder of similar quality you'd be looking at a Lido or similar, to put it in perspective. It probably is overkill for an Aeropress given how forgiving they are, but it is a good grinder and if you ever venture into espresso will be way better than a cheaper hand grinder or cheaper burr grinder. Coming from a Hario Mini hand grinder and Sunbeam EM0480, this grinder is worth every penny and more IMO.

    • We bought one for father's day for $280. It's amazing. I am tempted to buy another one to have for when hubby and I move out of the 'rents place. If you're a big coffee drinker, I can't recommend this thing enough.

What a time to be alive.

  • I had a sudden interest in one of these just a couple of days ago… thanks for the post :)

  • Was waiting for this! Big thanks :D

  • I always make my mornong coffee at home ….relaxing and big money saver .

  • Anytime this is under $200 - bargain. Great grinder, helps my old EM6910 produce really good shots.

  • Can't wait to experiment more with the grind and fine tune the coffee tastebuds

  • Fantastic grinder. I've had mine for nearly two years now. No signs of degradation or wear down. I use it at least three times a day.

  • Been waiting a while for this to pop up under the $200 mark. Bought one! Cheers!

  • Silly question, I currently own a Mazzer Mini and have for the last 4 years, but my dose amount can vary at times resulting in inconsistent shots. I have 3-4 lattes a day. The settings on the Smart Grinder Pro seem convenient, but a Mazzer is a Mazzer right? So would it be a downgrade for me to go down to the Breville or a good move?

    • I'd be googling how to make the Mazzer consistent, but the SmartGrinder is pretty consistent and at this price worth trying? Here's another fancier one:

      • Thank you, fascinating read. Grinding perfection. Even if I will not own it at 385 GBP + shipping.

The dose control on the breville is by timer.. it still results in some inconsistency in dosing. the only way to be consistent is to grind into a small container on set of scales and dose by weight. A few cafes around town do this now.

      • For normal everyday use it is good enough and on the very few occasions mine has been out much it is visible and easily compensated by eye.

    • another easy way to dose is to weigh the beans before grinding and then put in the hopper, stops beans getting stale, keeps hopper empty and clean. I weigh out two filters at a time 14-16g double for my small machine.

Ive been doing this three times a day, everyday for 6 years on my super jolly. only works on a manual mazzer but i think auto mazzers have electric dosing.

    • The Mazzer mini is definitely better, so it would be a sidegrade at best. The smart grinder grinds by time and the coffee comes out in clumps. If you want something that grinds by weight look at the Sette 270W. It has a new design which results in no clumps at all.

  • I have a Rocky, should I 'upgrade'?

pros - smaller, easier grind adjustment
cons, probably not as good an espresso grind, durability

    • Here's an upgrade tip for the rocky; put teflon tape on the burr carrier (google for rocky teflon mod). The rocky has uneven grinds because there's a bit of play in the burr carrier. Tightening it would make the grinds more consistent.

I think the rocky is a bit more basic grinder, but it still work in 15 years, if you just replace the burrs regularly. It's built like a tank.

How does this compare to a Baratza Encore? I'm coming from a hand grinder so I'm sure either will be an improvement but both are at a similiar price point.

    • These are the two I'm also looking at buying. The Baratza Encore never seems to dip below $195 so I think at $160 the Breville Smart Grinder Pro is a better deal. People usually say the Baratza is the better value because it is usually cheaper but with this sale the Breville might be better.

I don't own either though so don't know how useful my advice will be.

      • Thanks, good to see someone else considering them as well. The Breville seems like a good buy at this point but if the Encore is significantly better for $35-40 more…

    • It depends on the kind of coffee you're making. The Encore excels at courser grinds used for pourover/aeropress/french press etc - if you're planning on grinding primarily for espresso (finer grind) then go with the Breville.

      • Doing pourover ~90% of the time.

      • Damn after reading this I'm having second thoughts and now I'm leaning towards the Encore lol

        • +2

I should clarify that the Breville is good at course grinds too, it's not an espresso-only machine! They're both good grinders and if you're not concerned with espresso grinds then price should probably be the determining factor.

    cheers, grabbed one.

  • I don't need this… I don't need this… I don't need this…

Soon my Sunbeam EM0480 can be retired after years of service. Soon.

Do yourself a favour. I give you permission to dump that piece of junk and get the much better Smartgrinder. I made that change and coffees and process is much better.

      • Done, thanks for the push :-)

        • Excellente :-)

  • Mine is showing AUD $199. Newbie here, am I missing something?

    • Yes, you need to enter the coupon code on checkout

      • Entered the coupon code "POWERON", but it said coupon code cannot be applied.

        Anyone else having this error?

        • are you using paypal?
If so is it the same email address as your ebay account?
Is your ebay account registered to an AU address?

Hopefully these are the main reasons

Still no luck contact ebay via phone or online chat….thay are good at sorting it out

  • bought. Rumours that it'd be beaten on this price but those rumours never came to fruition.

  • Sooo, best coffee machine to pair this with :)

    • +2

any ;) a grinder is more important than a machine and fresh beans are more important than a grinder.

but seriously grinding correctly with quality beans will make any coffee whether its stovetop, press, filter or espresso taste better.

  • No more available via post it seems. Bugger

  • These are back in stock! Just ordered one delivered to Adelaide.
