Damn! This is $25.3 cheaper than the current TGGs 15% discount deal (with the $150 cashback). I hope Sony isn't trying to get rid of its good old refurb cameras with this deal.

PS: This 16-50mm kit lens is generally crap though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_v4M1Gcy_OQ

PPS: The a6000 body only is also on sale for $616, with the $150 eftpos card as well (which is a better deal if one doesn't want the kit lens, I guess): https://store.sony.com.au/cameras-interchangeablelenscamera-…

the 16-50mm really isn't as bad as some youtube "reviewers" would suggest!

    • Crap? And yet he still decides to use this lens when travelling

  • So it's not new?

  • There is also an ongoing offer for a $25 voucher from the sony online store for accessories for this model.

  • it's amazing how well this old camera still stacks up.

    • A6000 now still can blow many new Nikon and Canon APSC DSLRs out of the water by its superior autofocus and burst shooting speed.

    • I have an A5000, and whilst it obviously isn't going to stack up with something like this or the Nikon / Canon equivalent, it's a fantastic lightweight camera that has more than enough for an amateur photographer like me. I actually initially bought it for travelling as I was doing a bunch of South East Asian countries and NZ not long after, and it was perfect for that.

My advice is to buy the body only for $616 and put the $150 towards the 18-105 f4 which is on sale for an excellent price of $583 at digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au with free delivery.

Edit: DCW are also doing this same deal for $721 delivered.

    • Yes
but it is quite heavy this Lens compared to the 16-50mm (427g Vs 116g).
Main reason got this Sony series is for the weight, I have found the included lens fine for travelling/snapshot

I would go straight to 35mm F2.8 Zeiss. Yes not as versatile, but what you can shoot in range will blow your mind.

    • Okay obviously this is the lowest price it has ever, and possibly will be, and I missed it. What are the chances this will come around again? Digital Camera Warehouse don't seem to be a business that budges on price

      • I think it will come down again. I wouldn't be surprised if boxing day sales or new years sales see them discounted. If not at digital camera warehouse, maybe cambuy.

  • Okay, can I ask a bold direct question. What I'm really interested in is the a6500 but I'm finding the price is ridiculous, would this be a good starting point alternative at this price? I also figure if I hold off until next year to get the successor to the a6500 then at least I have a lens to begin with.

If you have the money, and do a lot of 4k VIDEO, then a6500 is the way to go. If you mainly take photos, a6000 is still a beast.

      • So the A6000 isn't so great for video?

        • A6000 is still very good for video if you can do without 4k and flat picture profile. Just check some a6000 movies in Vimeo, you might be surprised.

        • A6000 does not allow external audio mic like Rode. You have to buy the Sony mic if you want an ext mic. The LCD also does not flip so you can't use it to vlog.

        • A6000 is great for full HD video, also the autofocus is very good, but if you need 4k video, you need a6300 or a6500.

        • @MonkeyRum:

The LCD also does not flip so you can't use it to vlog

Well you can use it to vlog, some do. You just have to be good at aiming a lens at yourself or use a weird hack

        • @MonkeyRum:

So do any of the 6000 series have the flip lcd?

        • @nightelves: no, but the a5100/a5000 does

        • @jva: Is the autofocus similar to the A6500?

      • Doesn't a6500 suffer from a lot of rolling shutter when filming 4K?

        • All cameras with mechanical shutter will have rolling shutter issue more or less. The question is do you move camera left and right very fast and a lot?

To avoid rolling shutter, you need buy a much more expensive video camera with global shutter which a lot of these cameras have worse autofocus ability or they can only manually focus.

Or you can get GH4/GH5 for less rolling shutter for 4k video, but they suck in low light video quality, the 4k video autofocus capability and speed cannot compare with a6300/a6500 at all.

    • 6300? i went from 6000 to the 6300

    • digidirect has it for $1700 + $200 cash back so it's $1500 https://www.digidirect.com.au/cameras/cscmirrorless_cameras/…

      • +1

That's a great price. Is that the cheapest it has been so far? What's a great first lens too pair it with?

        • +4

As per my comment above, the 18-105 f4.

        • +2

if you want an all round lens, the Sony E PZ 18-105 F4 is a great shout.

I have been using Sigma 30mm F1.4 for almost a year now, and it has served me well

        • @istilllovemata: that Sigma 30mm f1.4 is my favorite lens on my a6500.

I also have the kit 16-50mm, the Sigma 60 f2.8 and the Samyang 12mm f2. I never use the kit lens anymore and I wish I had bought the 18-105mm f4 instead of the kit lens.

I'm seriously looking at getting the FE 85mm f1.8 during the sales now :)

Crazy I picked one of these up for $599 back in 2014. The sensor has seen better days though. Current gen micro four thirds has a full stop advantage right down to ISO 12800 now. Technology marches on.

  • Is it possible to do a price match at HN to use AMEX offer?

    • Why not?

Just just HN's price match guarantee terms, it says they match price at the time of purchase or until after 7 days of purchase. I bought mine 9 days ago for $844 ( before amex credits).

  • +3

Bought this from HN for $644 after split paying with two amex and getting 2x$100 credits. After $150 eftpos cards it works out to be $494 and I'll claim TRS from the full purchase price of $844 in January (final price will be $417).

  • +2

WTF you smoking Sony? I paid $543.15AUD 14 Sep 2014 11:24:08 AEST (ebay HK grey)
Are you sure you don't mean a6500???

    • +6

You mean back when the aussie dollar was 94c US as opposed to 76c today? Sony also know what they have and what it's worth, selling them cheaper back in 2014 got people using them and talking about them. The market dictates the price.

      • +1

Yes the A$ was stronger against the Yen then, but heck >3 years tech depreciation. The S8+ I bought for $1250 in June now costs ~$850.
And Sony have been selling E-mounts since 2010… got an a7R+canon e-mount adaptor from digidirect for $1495 Nov 2014… what are they selling the a7R for now?

        • The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake shot up sensor prices and are only very slowly recovering to this day. There has hardly been much 'depreciation' on camera tech since.

        • +3

@plmko: Dude Japan has a +7 mag earth quake pretty much every year. Sony has had a change of policy and they're ripping us off… I reckon they're actually in cahoots with Canon, Nikon and Fuji. I worked for Canon and I knew what their margins were, and they weren't small, a lot on bodies not so much on lenses, some lenses had very small margins at least in cost for Canon Aus.

  • Shows how much cameras have advanced in the last few years. To the point where it was impossible to think that phone cameras would get anywhere near high end cameras a few years back and now there are situations where a phone is all you need. And that's coming from someone who has owned a dozen DSLRs in the last 10 years.

    • +1

Can't control aperture with phone cameras

      • New dual lens phone cameras do an impressive job of giving shallow depth of field in post. I still like the control of a proper camera though ;)

  • +1

Make sure you grab Sigma 30mm 1.4 DC lens if you get this Camera!
    it's amazing

Still going strong 3 years on

  • Hi all. Any thoughts on this vs the RX100m3? I'm buying for someone who wouldn't mind getting back into photography and expanding their skills. She may inherit my OMD EM10mk2 in the future if I upgrade.

    • definitely recommend this over RX line - which are pretty much point and shoot. NEX/Axxx line has multiple controls and toggles that lets you adjust the settings on the fly, which is alot closer to a true photographer's experience than a RX. But RX is alot more pocketable than this.

  • Great, Thank you OP Bought From HN for 712 minus 200 Amex cashback.
With 150 cash back and TRS this will be around $297. It is a steal at this price

    • Sorry final price was 721 and with TRS it is around 306

  • I have Tamron lenses with Canon mounts. Is there an adaptor I could get so they work with this camera, and would autofocus work it would it be all manual?

    • Mostly manual physical converters so no AF. You can shell out a large sum for a metabone converter that will do AF but it's not as fast as on a canon mount camera. These mirrorless are great for using older manual focus and aperture lenses. For modern day mounts and lenses you are still better off with sticking to same brand/mount/system.

  • PS: I am told there is no stock so backorder 'hopefully a fortnight'. Doesn't inspire confidence…
