  • How is it compare with infinity bookshelf?

    • +1

That's very hard to answer in a useful way without a lot more information.

      • Yeah understand, I think for proper music playback I think amp + good speaker should be better, right?

        • +1

Yeah I’m not sure what extra information they need. It’s pretty simple in that monitors are designed for accurate sound not pleasing sound. This throws people into a spin thinking accurate must surely sound “better”. The reality is unless you want a headache after 30 minutes and be constantly playing with EQ on each new song then you want the “pleasing” sound.

        • @LoopyLou:

          Accurate does not mean displeasing.

Some people enjoy the detail, on well mixed music of course.

JBL 308 user here, no listening fatigue after "30 minutes" or several hours.

        • If you are using these as computer or stereo speakers just understand they are highly directional.

You should be 1-5m in front of the monitors. They are not really for say, filling a room with sound (although they will do it, hi fi speakers may be better suited).

  • Do you need a transformer?

    • +1

No, the pics show international voltage.

The reviews on gearslutz are actually quite favorable. I might give them a go!

    • +2

These are the best bang for the buck in the range

  • A$529 on Massdrop so the Amazon is a good price. Note the Amazon listing is for a single speaker so you need to add 2 in your cart for a pair.

    • and I thought speakers are normally sold in pairs…

      • That is what I don't understand Amazon, they have a lot of speaker listed by one.

      • +2

Not for studio monitors - they are usually sold by each speaker. These aren't really marketed for general consumers.

  • I have a pair, can recommend

  • +1

You need to have an audio interface to be able to use these.

    • They have a -10dBV consumer gear level input setting - most people should be fine using an RCA to unbalanced converter. Some people seem to have issues with earth loops occasionally.

      • I suppose you could use RCA to unbalanced, perhaps it's just me but I like to use an Audio Interface with Balanced XLR.

  • +2

These are the best monitors you can get in this price range. Absolute steal for this price.

    • Agreed. 308 user here, and the 305s are awesome (little less bass than the 8s, but substantial for a 5 inch monitor).

JBL = Just Bloody Loud. Any of Wharfdale, Gale, KEF, Boston Acoustics, Bowers & Wilkins, Spendor etc produce infinitely better sound. If you just want gut thumping bass (GTB) to annoy the neighbours, then JBL are the ticket.

    • +6

I don't think you understand this product.

      • -2

It's a pair of speakers made by JBL right?

        • +3

A studio monitor - not just a pair of speakers. These are designed to be used in a recording studio setting.

        • -7

@CheapCoffee: For that purpose you would not go past B&W. What Abbey Road is fitted out with. Rule of thumb: Amercian Speakers (JBL)= all bass + power, no detail. Japanese speakers: Technically good, but no feel, no emotion, no warmth. Like CD vs vinyl. British speakers: The best.

        • +1

@Legoman: With all due respect, the B&W speakers you are referring to are now discontinued. But I see them around for about AUD $35,000. So, I get what you are saying, but hope that your delusion is not bothering your normal daily life activities.

        • -5

@Risto: Thanks for your concern however sarcastic it may be, but no, not bothering me at all. I see B&W's for sale on Gumtree all the time for hundreds, not thousands. They're heirlooms that get handed down through the generations. Sometimes they get sold for moving/space reasons, but a used B&W is way better than a brand new JBL.

        • +3

@Legoman: Oh, OK. Any B&W will do and any JBL won't. Got it.

        • @Legoman: B&W make objectively crap speakers.

    • +1

I know specifications are annoying, but they don't really agree with your assertion.

    • +1

These speakers have probably the flattest frequency response you'll in their price range (new). They'll certainly be better than sub $1000 Wharfdales for their intended use (which is for accurate studio monitoring, not HI-FI listening).

if you just want gut thumping bass

Have you heard the JBL Flip 4? Very detailed speaker to the point of the high end being piercing. So no, not all JBL products have the same bass heavy sound signature.

These are pretty much universally regarded as being the best studio monitors for under $500, if they were "Just Bloody Loud" or had too much bass I doubt they'd get even a 10th of the attention they do considering the other options on the market.

  • Can I connect monitor speaker to normal amp?

    • Does it have preamp outputs?

      • Yeah I mean AV receiver.

        • If it has pre outs then yes. If your Infinity speakers are of a similar size and reasonably recent then you might not find a huge upgrade going to these.

  • +1

308 user here, 305s are great. I could these against yahama hs5 and hs8, and krk rokkits. These won out for me.

    Gearslutz agrees. Good buy.
