Don't think that's the case with this one. The phone itself is 999, where shipping takes it over the line. I would assume that shipping costs are not considered when applying GST? They don't include shipping costs in TRS, so would imagine that they wouldn't do it the other way around as well.
The value of taxable importation is the sum of:
the customs value of the goods
any customs duty payable
the amount paid or payable to transport the goods to their place of consignment in Australia
the insurance cost for that transport
any wine tax payable.
What you quoted only applies if the goods themselves are over $1000. Then GST is added to both the good and the shipping costs.
If it's under $1000, shipping costs aren't included in determining if it's over $1000 (if that makes sense).
So if something is $950 + $100 shipping = no GST payable.
If something is $1001 + $100 shipping = GST payable on $1101 total.
@Porthos: I think that's a dumb rule and open to abuse. They can declare the item at lower value and shift the difference into the shipping charges. Unless shipping cost gets audited as well.
@lostn: Most rules can be open to abuse a lot of the time. Apart from some dodgy eBay sellers, I don't see a major retailer doing it that way (think Amazon/Newegg/BHphotovideo etc). And don't ever really see many people trusting a dodgy vendor with over $1000 purchase!
The more stupid thing is the change they're making to the law next year.
