Pre-pay your power bill for a year.

      • I'd love to do that but I use my AmEx to pay my electricity bill, plus I am local champion at the retailer so I get 3 Ascent points per dollar for this. That's why a purchase that can be refunded is my plan for this promotion (if it's allowed of course).

        • $2500 * 3 points = 7500 points. You'd get 10x more points by using this card.
If you can't do the refund trick, it's still worth doing this imo.
          Otherwise, wish cards.

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: Yeah, fair enough, but those points are worth only $750 if sold, and again that $2500 of spend is diverted from my AmEx meaning I'm not earning any Ascent (KF) points for all that spend. I guess it does sound silly, but I don't think I want to collect QF points unless it's for redeeming, which will be too hard to do due to no status.

    • Yes they'll take away the points, it says so in the PDS

      • Thanks for the confirmation, no point wasting a credit enquiry on this card then.

      • Not unless you tell them that you already cancel the credit card. In this circumstance they just ask for your bank details.

  • As this is a Visa card you could prepay some things such as insurances, rates, bills in general, whatever you know will be required anyway. Have not read the T&Cs as my card has only been cancelled 6 months ago and am waiting out the 12 months. However, if you are really finding it hard to find the 'spend' pay something of someone you trust to do a bank transfer back.

Once the bonus points comes through, cancel it and apply for something whilst waiting out the exclusion period.

PS, don't know about the booking cancellation and getting refunded. If you test that, let us know.

As this is a Visa card you could prepay some things such as insurances, rates, bills in general, whatever you know will be required anyway.

What does having a Visa have to do with prepaying things?

      • Some accounts cannot be paid by AMEX. A Visa or M/C is more flexible and accepted by govt departments such as rates etc.

  • my annual fee on this card is due in Jan 20 and they only offered to waiver half of the total fee.

i'm thinking of jumping ship to something annual fee free

anyone recommend any (Would prefer Qantas FF)

    thanks!

    • +1

      Qantas Discovery (fee free).

      • thanks for that!

Any good Visa/Master card linked to Qantas? :)

        • +1

Not that I know of (that have a decent earn rate anyway, without an annual fee). It's just not profitable giving away QFF points on a fee-free MC/VISA as the interchange rate won't cover the cost of the points.

        • No.

      • Is there a decent one that has airport lounge passes included. Haven't seen one of those on offer for a while.

        • Yeah you'll need the Qantas ultimate for that but it does come with an annual fee. Can't get lounge passes with free cards, doesn't make sense for the issuer to do this :)

    • I went virgin platinum. 60k points, $129 flight credit negatively offsetting $65 annual fee.

  • Guys always keep a track of your credit score…applying for credit cards damages your credit score in long term.. do not apply for more than 4 credit cards per year…especially altogether.

    • There is also a school of thought that it does not damage yr credit score. There are plenty of people applying for numerous cards and it affecting their score only marginally. Having said that, the scores are not terribly reliable anyway. Just be careful to be sure to only apply for the limit on the card that is necessary to get the points. I once overlooked the limit and it showed that I'd been approved for a limit of 50K.

      • I’ve been sitting on a credit savy score of 666 for the past 5 cards.

        • +1

What in the devil are you doing applying for 5 cards?

Before you answer, I think I got it: Professional.

        • +1

Yep, professional points collector. It's the best way to 'manufacture' points.

        • it does afect your credit score…if you apply all cards at once then your score will decrease

  • To qualify for the 75000 points, do I need to buy a qantas ticket with this card?

    • No, you just need to spend $2500 in 3 months.

      • Thanks

    • No, that's only to qualify for the status credits

      • I was wondering about that, do we need to use the card to buy the qantas flight to get the bonus, or only buy a qantas flights , from the T&C seems like we just need to put our QFF number
To earn 75 Bonus Status Credits, you must apply for an ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card by 24th January 2018, be approved and then book and travel on a new Qantas return flight (excludes Classic Flight Rewards, partner or codeshare flights) by 11.59pm (AEST) 31 May 2018. Your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership number must be recorded at the time of booking. If you change or cancel your flight and/or travel outside the specified dates, this Bonus Status Credits offer will not apply. Bonus Status Credits could take up to 10 weeks after travel to be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account. Bonus Status Credits will not contribute towards attaining or retaining Platinum One or Loyalty Bonus.

        • You're correct - I booked a flight with a different CC for work and still got the status credits, it's only linked to your FF number.

    • no, that's only for the status credits

    i have this - from last time….

    but i forgot about THIS

I signed up for the second time 2 months ago, have already received the SC's despite not booking a QF ticket.

Do love this card, second time I've signed up for the deal. Made use of the travel insurance, and cancelled after 6 months when the points came through. Had no issues getting approved the second time.

    • I cancelled my black. 2 months later applied successfully for platinum. Got it, but no bonuses…12 month reset.

      • Yeah I waited about 14 months between cancelling and applying for the new card.

  • anyone know how you can find out if you are eligible for the promo if you cant remember when you cancelled your last card?

    • You can call them up. They'll be able to tell you.

  • +1

The annual fee is too high after the first year. If u will cancel it, that’s fine otherwise Amex charge is better, $1200 annual fee with $700 credit, so its only $100 more but with much better awards.
If u r an anz home loan customer, this card is fine.apply it and ask anz to link it to your loan package next year, then u can bargain with anz to reduce the annual fee to hundred dollar something. If your loan size is big enough, to say 5m+, U may get all waived.

    • +2

Definitely not worth it if you don't cancel, but this is OzB of course you cancel!

    • How do you get $700 credit with the Amex charge? I can only see $300 travel credit!

      • U get a free credit card which has $400 credit.

  • +1

D'oh! Just signed up for the damn 60k deal whilst I was waiting for this one to come up..
Have to say, ANZ were utterly useless throughout the entire application, call after call and even after showing them more than sufficient proof of income and bank statements, they wanted more clarification on my details.
Useless international call centre who were so hard to understand it was totally off putting. I actually wrote an email to ANZ customer service to cancel my request due to their incompetence and then the card magically appeared 2 days later..
At least CBA have a local customer service team.. I'm only using this for the free points then ditching it.

    • +1

Similar experience. I wrote a letter of complaint to the complaints department. Yes snail mail. And this was also ignored. ANZ customer service is on a par with Optus.

  • Does anyone know the international lounges that you can access for free when travelling as mentioned on this card benefit?
Are these lounges worth the time to visit and can you bring in extra guest with you?

    • It used to be worth it back in the days but now more and more of them aren't accepting it. It's rather a hit and miss.

      • Can you bring in extra guest if the lounge accepts the card?

        • Not anymore after they got rid of the Amex card. it used to be Visa for yourself and Amex for the other person. Not sure if that's still the case. I'd rather just status match to airline these days to ensure entrance

  • This deal was there for quite some time now. ANZ never took it off since they ran last time, and instead extended it. Anyway, I am looking for an Amex card deal ATM.

    • I would say wait until Amex offers a bigger sign on bonus for the Explorer card. Atm it's only 60k.

  • PSA: to get 75 status credit you don’t have pay for qantas flight with this card you’ll get it anyway as long as you fly Qantas for example your company pays for your ticket (my case)

    • Really? Is it due to it being linked to your QFF acc?

      • I didn’t really dig into it but yes it’s probably just link to your QFF not the actual card

    • So does that mean for those lucky FIFO workers who fly QANTAS Link will get the bonus SC? Because the companies pays for their flights to site.

  • -5

instead of paying bills in advance, what you can do is add the card to your paypal account and then use paypal to send money to another paypal account using the credit card as the funding source. you have to pay a fee but you've effectively 'real' spent like $100 or so to get 75000 points.

    paypal acc #1 -> $2500 -> paypal acc #2
    paypal acc #2 -> $2500 back -> paypal acc #1

fees should be like $100 or so

    • +3

Terrible idea. More efficient to just purchase gift cards or prepay utilities.

    • I wouldn't mention about that method in case the credit card company cotton on about it and banned the use of Paypal for that purpose.

    • How about
      paypal acc #1 -> $2500 -> paypal acc #2
      Paypal #2 -> bank account 1
bank account 1 -> your bank account. $50 fee or so.

  • OMG how can I spend $2.5k in the credit card within 3 months being an OzBargainer?

  • Got my card yesterday. I’m trying to join QFF. On their page it is showing $89 to pay for membership? Really?

    • All you need to get free membership of QF is the Woolies Reward card and set it to QF points.

  • What's the best and easiest way to cancel this card once you receive all your points and paid off all remaining balance?
Call or head into branch ?

I have used it for three months. No longer need it and wanting to cancel now .

Any one who been through it please share info.

    • +2

Call, give a reason for cancelling (e.g. AmEx, credit score), accept any retention bonus point offers (call back again later to cancel), when you get the cancellation letter add a calendar reminder for 12 months time to apply again ;-)

While you waiting for your 12 month reboot, grab a Rewards card.

      • Thanks…
Will look into the rewards card.
So they might offer you additional QFF points to stay on the card hey?
Wondering what would be the best excuse to cancel without anz questioning too much. Was gonna say I am heading overseas for couple years and won't be using it….Good enough?

        • They won't ask further questions if you say you're leaving to sign up for an AmEx card, with better offers.
Suggest you wait a month or so before applying for a Rewards card to allow your credit rating to bounce back, and your existing account to be purged.

        • @muncan:
Problem is there is no better Amex deal out there now.

        • @muncan:

Haha. They know better why you Cancelling.
I wonder if anyone just be up front and say I only signed up for the points….Now I got it and thanks and bye-bye

        • @lovepub:

When I finished up with the Black Rewards card, I told them just that.

No harm, as the points were received and transferred out, and at least I can be honest.

    • If you really don’t want them to make you an offer you can’t refuse, it’s easiest to write a quick note and post it and then you don’t have to deal with them and make up stories that they have a script to adhere to and try to argue you out of. It actually turns out quicker to write a quick cancellation note.

  • Hi..I am eligible for this offer but can you please tell me what eligible purchases mean ? Can I use this credit card to lets say make a direct debit arrangement to pay my utility bills (Synergy, Water Corp) and council rates. Are these into that eligible criteria ? I dont want to spend on unnecessary goods just for the sake of it.

    • +1

If you can get up to the required spend by paying all your utility bills rates etc you will then qualify to receive the sign on bonus. The T&Cs may say that you don’t get points for government charges such as rates, rego and ATO etc., but IME the spend may still qualify for the sign on bonus.

If you can’t come up with $2.5k worth of necessary spend the next three months this card may not be for you.

      • +1

I have spoken to a number of providers of credit card and their staff seem to have great difficulty in defining government charges. When I have paid rates and rego and then checked my statement I did receive points on that spend. I always try to pay via Post Billpay with paypal so perhaps that makes a difference. I believe that if a purchase/spend earns points it will be eligible for the required spend amount. It is important to note that American Express Discovery card T&C state that "government bodies in Australia where you will earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent"
Would appreciate further clarification on this.

        • +1

Sometimes they will say they don’t pay on government charges but then they do. You just get lucky.

  • Thanks OP.

    Just applied. And uploaded payslips.

    Cheers.

(Hopefully they honour the bonus points, as I previously had a Black Rewards card, and it isn't listed as an excluding one).

  • So, i signed up for this card only to find out I also need to sign up for the Qantas Frequent Flyer program to get the points (I guess thats obvious). There is normally a $89 sign up fee. I did a quick google and found this: https://www.qantaspoints.com/join-now?code=FAMILYFREE

    Hope that helps someone else.

  • Does anyone know how long it takes for them to deposit the points into your qantas account? My card is linked as every dollar spent has increased points but the 75k has not gone through despite spending over the minimum spend.

  • Do I need to have a flight booked to get the lounge passes? The T&C says 2 per year, so I'm thinking of organising lounge passes now and then in the new year, before cancelling the card.

Also, to cancel the card, do I need to go into a brach or can I do it over the internet or phone?

    • Just ring up for your passes and they will send them out. Cancel over phone when you want to.

    • Do you need to have the card for over 3 months to claim the lounge passes? I called regarding the points and they said they would be added to my frequent flyer account after the three month period had passed just wondering if this is the same with the passes.

  • Applied for this half an hour ago, received an email instantly saying "Thanks for your application XXXXX for an ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card, it's just about finished." The next step is to upload my payslips for income verification purpose which I've just done. Does this mean i've been conditionally approved? Or is everything still up in the air?

The last time i applied for this ANZ credit card, i received an email from ANZ with the word "congratulations" almost instantly. This was a number of years back.

  • got rejected for this card back in October last year, but I meet all minimum requirements… when would it be ok for me to apply for this again?

    • or should I just try for the platinum with 65k points?
