How Would You Use a Free $100 Gift Card

I just got a $100 gift card from an organisation for running a workshop. The gift card can be used at Coles,Myer,OW,Liqourland,Target.

When you get a gift card for free, do you use it for grocery or buy something for yourself?

    Definitely groceries!

It's one time I'd just grab a trolley and chuck in whatever I want in there without really caring about price.

    Food makes me happy lol

      without really caring about price

It's like money, so treat it with respect, like the rest of your money.

    • So did you pick groceries or treat yourself?

When is the "use-by-date" on this? Wait for the after Christmas sales. There is currently an ebay 20% off sale today. People might be able to say if you can use gift cards for this.

  • +2

    I'd treat myself.
You could also use it to pay for the groceries and use the $100 saved on something else if you wanted.

  • Although I find Coles to be priced slightly higher than other supermarkets I'm sure $100 will buy at least what I could get for $95 elsewhere so I'd buy groceries with it instead of selling the gift card. I'd probably throw in a few nice things into the shop but the majority of it would be spent on groceries.

Groceries. Then $100 of my own money is freed up to spend as I like. You probably have lots of time to use the card so you can stick to bargains.

If you're a Sydneysider catching public transport and work near Wynyard, top up your Opal card with the gift card 😂

    • +1

Other Coles locations in Sydney doing Opal topups are Broadway Centre, Stockland Balgowlah, and St. Leonards Coles Express.

      • Yeah and Liverpool and Chipping Norton but apart from Broadway and St Leonards, 9-5 workers wouldn't normally go to Coles to top up. The smart ones with AMEXes go to Woolies in Town Hall or Coles Wynyard to do it.

        • Or you know, just most of the Coles stores in Australia.

        • +1

@pennypincher98: Not all Coles do Opal card top-ups. It's like 0.5 Coles for every ten Woolies that does Opal top-ups

        • @kerfuffle: Really? I know some don't which is why I said most but my 10 most local Coles all do Opal top ups.

        • @pennypincher98: According to the list on the Opal site when you look for Coles. Maybe there's more Coles that do Opal top-up these days.

        • @kerfuffle: Hmmm I haven't looked at the list so I wouldn't know. I just top mine up at 7-11 while grabbing my coffee and/or offers or the station. I only have a debit card so no need to claim points :)

        • @pennypincher98: Haha total opposite of me. I always top up at Woolies or Coles to maximise point earning potential or in the case of Coles, flybuys. (AMEX can't be used at the station or as auto top-up unfortunately)

        • @kerfuffle: I could actually register for Flybuys and get money off my opal card eventually, although $2000 for $10 isn't really worth it..
I think I'm just going to set up auto top-up soon, it's so annoying when you don't have enough balance to get through those damn gates.

@pennypincher98: Yeah which is why you take advantage of the bonus offers. I had two overlapping offers where I got 1000 points if I spent $80 Wednesday to Friday and 1000 points if I spent $80 Friday to Sunday. Topped up $80 on my Opal card on Friday at Coles and got 2000 points.

Or if you know what your average spend is per week and can afford to pay that amount every three or four weeks, just manual top up once a month.

        • @kerfuffle:

Topped up $80 on my opal card.

Good heavens, I would be afraid I'd lose it with that much on there! I know it's basically just as likely as losing a $80 gift card, credit card etc but wow what if I did lose it !

        • +1

@pennypincher98: can you register it so if its lost they can transfer the amount to a new card?

        • +1

@pennypincher98: I actually have an amount closer to $200 on it (thanks Coles for your constant FlyBuys bonus point offers!). Like jjjaar says though, you can register it and subsequently block it in case you misplace it and can transfer the funds from the misplaced card to a new one.

        • @kerfuffle: Trouble is mine is registered but I don't have the slightest clue of what email and password I used. Not worth trying to ring them up for my stupidity but if I lose it I'll be sure to reset password / remember login details / cry helplessly in the corner xD

    • Or if you drive your tolls are sorted for, what, about four days or so.

  • I'd use it to treat myself to groceries I wouldn't usually buy.

  • Groceries.

    Scotch is a grocery, yeah?

    • +2

Even better than that, scotch is made from barley, and barley is a plant, so scotch is almost a vegetable!

      • Grain*

        • +1

Still counting it as part of my 5 and 2. :)

  • I'd spend it on everyday purchases and save $100.

  • Here's a new idea: use it on Christmas presents (assuming you aren't just giving Zapals deals :P)

  • Where's the eneloops option? :)

  • +1

Just use it ASAP on whatever you were already intending to buy as gift cards are worth less than cash.

Then if a good deal pops up you have an extra $100 but aren't limited to those stores necessarily

  • Merged from How to spend unexpected eGift card worth $100

I just won a $100 eGift card through a random competition. It allows me to choose various stores such as general supermarket (Coles, Woolworths), department stores (DJ, Myer, target, Kmart, Harvey Norman), fuel cards, eBay, Bunnings, restaurant and cinema etc.

With the current situation, I still have my job and working from home as a teacher and haven't really left home other than exercise.

What would you spend the unexpected eGift card? Essentials, work related, save for something in the future?

I dont really need anything at the moment and the giftcard wont expire for another 3 years but I may forget about it and it will be too late when I realise.
