  • Which one is better a UV filter or a polarizing filter?

    • +1

UV filter may slightly reduce the f-stop but only acts to protect the lens on modern DSLRs. Polarisers produce certain effects

      • thanks mate.

      • +1

Most camera pros I know state that UV filters are mostly only useful to protect the glass and that they have hardly any purpose for digital cameras other than that.
The polariser is more useful in my opinion.

UV filters are mostly only useful to protect the glass … for digital cameras

digital? Same was true 50 years ago for film.

By the way, such filters are $6 on ebay. Nothing special about Hoya.

        • +1

@manic: the quality of filters varies DRASTICALLY between manufacturers.

          don't put a $6 filter on a $1000 lens.

        • @diamondd:

Why not? The optics and coating on my $6 reading glasses are great, even if the frames are not the best.
And my eyes are worth a lot more than your camera.

Multi-element lenses are rocket science. Flat filters are not.

Sometimes, photographic hardware seems to have almost as much BS marketing as hifi.

        • [@manic]di(/comment/5351378/redir):

          Your eyes don't take photographs.

Why put cheap glass on a lens that will degrade image quality? Even if it's a relatively cheap lens you wouldnt want to make photos worse unless you're a hipster who is into that kind of thing.

A good filter can also reduce if not prevent flare altogether.

      • But the camera balances the reduce out.

  • Hi Darshu,

Basically, UV filters are to use to protect your lens also enhance the colour of the sky and reduce UV. It's best to always leave this filter on your lens to prevent it from dust and scratched. CLPs are outdoor filters and reduces reflections and enhance colours.

    • thanks..

      • too bad. I just realized my 18-55mm lens has 52mm diameter so wont fit to this filter. May be time to upgrade the lens.

        • +1

Yeah as above a UV filter is just protection for your lens. Cheap UVs will sometimes produce odd internal reflections visible on your shots. Something to look out for.

Before buying ANY filter read some reviews. filters can be a bit subjective, but chances are if a couple of people vouch for it, it shouldn't be terrible.

    • also enhance the colour of the sky

Surely you are thinking of a polarising filter?

  • Has anyone used the Sony rx 100 mk1 filter adapter before? Wouldn't mind trying some polarising and nd filters on it.

    • Yep, works really well. From memory I got a kiwifotos lens adaptor kit and kenko 52mm cpl

  • Can OP do a deal on 52mm UV filter and polarising fitler? (to suit Nikon D3400 with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm)

    Cheers!
