Oh man - tempting. BNE->BKK->LHR is about as convenient as it gets, and you've got to love Thai food and service.

    • -7

Thai "service" eh? Yeah, I am thinking what you're thinking. Bang-c*ck, here I come. Wait! Wrong site.

      • +4

you'll find that Thai flight attendants will bend over backwards to make sure you have as many drinks as you want where as on QANTAS for example they'll sling you one drink and then act like you've just killed their mother if you ask for a second

Thai Airways is one of the most comfy airlines to ever fly on

        • -3

not sure about their maintenance record. weren't they banned from flying into EU for a while?

      • LMAO! OzBargainers have no sense of humor. O dear!

        • nah we just don't like sex tourists.

        • @insular: Are you sure about that? And what do you think Thailand's tourism industry will be like if Daddy doesn't go there as a sex tourist? Relax. Have never been to Thailand, and it isn't in my to-go list any time soon. Just taking the piss, mate.

          @AussieDaddy:

what do you think Thailand's tourism industry will be like if Daddy doesn't go there as a sex tourist? Relax. Have never been to Thailand, and it isn't in my to-go list any time soon

          contradicting yourself there 'mate'.

coming from someone who has been to Thailand numerous times and seen all parts of the country i guarantee you Thailand would be a better place without all the sleaze. it's now probably the worst country in SE asia to visit in terms of the people friendliness bar a few remote (ironically muslim) regions that don't get any tourists (because there is nothing particularly interesting to see there).

        • @insular: What contradiction? I don't have to be there to know that tourism heavily influences Thailand's economy. I've mentioned that I was taking the piss above with regards to the sex tourism, but tourism in general is estimated to amount from 9 - 17.7 percent of that country's GDP: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourism_in_Thailand https://www.bangkokpost.com/archive/tourism-to-continue-grow…

I think if they have had a problem with tourism they would have stopped it long time ago. Entire cities, communities, and businesses rely on tourism as their livelihood. Let's not kid ourselves, they need the money, and the foreigners need to "holiday".

@AussieDaddy: contradiction as in, you question the tourism industry if "Daddy" doesn't go there as a sex tourist. your username is AussieDaddy. then you say you're taking the piss.

after making the comment you are on the 'wrong site'. plenty of sex tourist forums out there, i can see why you're confused.

anyone that advocates for sex tourism is clearly a sex tourist.

but tourism in general is estimated to amount from 9 - 17.7 percent of that country's GDP

how much of your old age pension you spend on prostitutes do you think actually goes to the country's GDP? there's corrupt police, girls, their families etc.

I think if they have had a problem with tourism they would have stopped it long time ago.

the problem is they can't. there's too much corruption to stop it. it never should have happened in the first place. it CAN be cleaned up, but fat corrupt police have a lot to lose. not to mention the russian mafia.

Entire cities, communities, and businesses rely on tourism as their livelihood.

          tourism, not sex tourism

Let's not kid ourselves, they need the money, and the foreigners need to "holiday".

what they need is for women to get real jobs and a real education, not selling their body like a piece of meat to buy their next iphone whilst manipulating every foreigner that's dumb enough to pay them.

the sex tourist creep foreigners need to be in jail for exploiting vulnerable people so they can live out their sick pedophile fantasies.

6-700 is typical price I have paid the last 1/2 dozen times. Ex bne

  • Ex-Syd this is a good price for Thai Air, but not my favourite airline, including seats too firm. You will get Emirates when on sale for this price, and Qantas even cheaper.

  • Argh! I've been waiting for some sale fares for the end of January but still getting $1400 MEL to BKK.

  • It has been 1.4-1.5k for holiday season for ages. I was lucky enough to get Royal Brunei Melb-BKK for about 1.2k over the Xmas and new year period.

    • I was getting the $1400 fares weeks ago when I searched - that's why I am frustrated since this is supposed to be a sale with a start date of 16th January. There have been some fantastic fares with Thai during the year - $1400 at the end of January is pretty much double.

      Rant over.

I flew April Mel to bkk for 715 during April this year booked via some booking site can't remember the name

  • Mid year is better time to visit Thailand imo. Dryer and it is low season so accommodation is much cheaper and available.

  • Yes agree. Cheapest I ever got on Thai airways for MEL-BKK was in end July for about $650.

  • End of the year or high season in the resort areas of e.g Phuket, accomodation prices nearly doubled.

  • Melbourne to Bkk flights with Royal Brunei often asnlow as $650 in off season. Very light loading in early October only 90 seats filled in economy. Plenty of room to spread out. Some don't like the fact that no alcohol is available. Thai only serve it with main meal nowadays in economy.Their daytime direct flights are great for avoiding jet lag.

    In defence of Thailand;
if you avoid Phuket, Pattaya, and Sois Cowboy and Nana in Bangkok, then you will be avoiding 99% of the sex industry. BTW most of the girls are supporting their children (Usually with their parents), their parents (Usually in the country) and possibly others.
There is a lot more than that to see in Thailand and great for an inexpensive and relaxing holiday.

it's getting more widespread than that. there are bars and prostitutes on almost every island and major tourist city now (add chiang mai to that).

they are also supporting their deadbeat thai boyfriends that get them pregnant and force them to work so they can sit around on their lazy ass, drink and get more younger thai girls pregnant.

      it's a neverending vicious cycle.

it's the same with tuktuk drivers as well, if you encourage them by paying stupid amounts for short rides they just keep ripping foreigners off and nobody pays a normal fair price anymore.

my tip is to actually hop on a bicycle or motorbike and visit the places that don't get tourists. you'll see the genuine land of smiles like it was in the 90s and earlier, not the shady "i'm only smiling because i'm going to rip you off"

but still, a beach holiday is a beach holiday, and i'm by no means saying not to go, it's fantastic. just open your eyes a little.

thailand loves chinese tourists now because they just pay whatever they ask so they don't lose face.

myanmar is actually a better bet these days and there is so much going on with that country anyway even before the muslim genocide there were still major issues. the people there are amazing and genuinely friendly outside of the main tourist drags.

      • Agree about the Chinese tourists. On our last trip to Bangkok we were pretty much invisible and I think it's because it was assumed we would try to haggle too much or wouldn't spend much money.

  • I'm curious if anyone is actually getting these fares. Out of curiosity I had a look at some dates in February (since January was so expensive) and I'm still getting a fare much more than the advertised sale fare. Nothing below $918.55.
It's not until I hit the middle of Feb that the prices drop to anything reasonable.

    • Maybe something to do with the lunar new year?
