Damn got in just before me, computer froze! Anyway my coupon code is 92911500124. I bought a Metabox P650HP last month almost the same spec except had the M.2 PCIE 512gb storage for $1779.

    • How's the Metabox build and performance like so far?

      • +8

Probably decent build and performance but just remember it still froze.. :p

        • +4

Actually that was a Dell :)

        • +1

Hehe I was just trying to be funny. Have a good weekend!

      • Good so far no complaints at all. I did spend a little extra to get the P650HP as it has more aluminum/less plastic and more decent speakers (they are ok). Keyboard is nice and backlight is appealing too.

Surely not on the same level as Alienware as far as chassis goes though.

      • Their base model uses the Gigabyte Sabre chassis (and probably the same mobo as well).

    MUST RESIST… for some reason…

    • +4

Colour can be changed much like an RGB keyboard or mouse

  • The email that I got from JB has the same code. 92911500124

    • Mine is the same as well. Confirmed generic code.

  • Looks pretty bad ass. I'm tempted

  • So if you use gift vouchers at 7.5% then that's -150

    Then TRS scheme is -190

Note, these laptops are quite bulky and heavy to frequently carry around.

  • wow, only 1 year?!? warranty ?? My 2010 Alienware used to have 3 years …

    • JB Hi-Fi would likely honour an extra year statutory warranty on a $2k laptop. Probably even an extra 2 years if you don't mind fighting for it.

  • +1

I think this is decent value. For comparison, I bought this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/344493
    The i7-7700HQ upgrade, extra 8GB of DDR4 2400MHz, 1Tb 7200RPM is decent.

I purchased an extra extra 1x8GB DDR4 2400MHz stick and 1Tb 7200RPM separately which came to $205, bringing the total to around $1550.

For $450 more you're getting a processor boost which is worth marginal value in gaming but probably great for other tasks, Alienware glitter, hopefully better build quality and possibly better cooling since that chassis is also comes in a 1070 model.

The screen between the models seems very similar if not the same from what I can tell on reviews.

    • The 1060 is also faster in the Alienware as it is not the qmax model. There is around a 5 to 10 percent performance difference.

      • Dell Inspiron models miss out some of bells and whistles on Alienware laptops, such as G-sync display, Graphics Amp compatibility, metal body, overall higher build quality, etc.

Not to say that it's not a good option as an entry level gaming.

  • Only get this if you neeeeeed a gaming laptop on the go. For less money than this you can make a mini itx version of this and buy a 1080 monitor with a sick mouse and keyboard for lan parties and such.

  • How does this compare to the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7577? link got it for $1599 on the Black Friday sale, and going to upgrade to an 2TB SSHD and to 16GB of ram.

Also why does this laptop have 2.8 stars out of 5? People say battery life is bad and display isn’t too good.

    • I bought this laptop from the the other deal costing 1359.20 minus the cash back, just got it yesterday and it feels pretty good with the display and the keyboard, though a bit heavy, which is ok for a entry level gaming laptop.

The display is good, not brilliant and the battery life is ok. The machine is also pretty quite when running. Getting a 1060 for that price is a steal, just need to upgrade for hard drive.

      • I bought the same one. Is the touch pad in yours loose? When I use the touch pad it has a bit of wiggle, like a table with uneven legs.

        • No,all good on my end. No wiggling.

      • Hows the battery life on the Dell Inspiron? I’m going to use it for a bit of work and gaming.

        • It is inferior compared to the 67 because of the smaller battery, but it is still a bit above average based on the overall laptop market.

  • At this point better to wait til the 8th gen processors i7-8xxxx become more prolific I reckon. They're the same price and a huge performance boost

    • Huge performance boost for what exactly?
A GTX 1060 6GB bottlenecks a 7700HQ. Unless you're doing CPU intensive professional work having more cores will be completely pointless.
Also despite sharing the same TDP in the real world they use a lot more power, which means more thermal throttling (hence the lower base clocks on the hepta-core CPU's). So you can't even unlock all of the potential on the "mobile" versions.

      • There is always an option of using Alienware Graphics Amplifier if one needs more serious gaming or to replace desktop.

for FHD gaming 1060 or 1070 wouldn't make much of a difference

        • We're talking about CPU's…

        • @Viper8: I am talking about bottleneck of 1060.

        • +1

          @fidelio:
You don't buy a laptop with a 1060 in it only to then run it with external graphics. That's pointless. Pick one or the other.
Anyway, this is all irrelevant to the original topic of a 6-core 8th gen CPU being pointless for a 1060 laptop.

        • @Viper8: everyone has different needs

    50hz???

    • 50Hz panel can't be right, pretty sure it would be 60Hz. Which is a little disappointing for it's RRP price, but at <AU$2k, one can't really complain.

      • Should be 60hz, also display on this laptop is G-sync enabled

        • Yup, forgot about G-sync, that's a really good point. Perfect for cranking details to Ultra-mega-max in single player games.

  • Unless your all about alienware, I found a cheaper laptop here with similar specs.

  • better deal here

If I was spending about 2k for a gaming laptop I'd really be looking for a 1070 now.

1060s at this price range represents poor value IMO. Better off getting a cheaper 1060 build or spending a bit more for a 1070.

    • +1

You need to factor in screen quality, speaker quality, chassis quality, cooling, keyboard and track-pad quality, chassis quality etc. Its not just CPU, GPU, sotrage and RAM that cost money.
IMO I'd happily buy a 1060 equipped laptop vs. the cheapest 1070 laptop I could find, cos that ultra cheap 1070 is going to be let down by cheap components.

  • Better off buying the Acer laptop https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/346479

    • +1

you'll be banging your head against the wall after using an Acer.
Even though same specs, the slower SSD or slower component which is why it's cheap.

  • It comes with windows, does anyone know if you get a windows disc and motherboard drivers disc?
If windows is preinstalled does it have bloatware?
I'm swinging towards Metabox for the install discs and no bloatware

    • All mainstream laptops with Windows come with OEM Windows pre-installed (the license code cannot be used on a fresh installation)>
They also include all of their own additional software, however you can simply re-set Windows to remove it, which is no more complicated than installing a fresh copy of Windows.

  • Better to get a Metabox with 1070 graphics.
Or the 1070 version of the Alienware (it's already quite heavy).

  • I just bought a Alienware R4 17.3 QHD i7-7700HQ GTX1070 16Gb 128G SSD for US$1515 in BlackFriday at US dell website. I think AU dell will have better Alienware Deal in boxing day. We should wait boxing day deal.

    here's a really decent alternative from HP - $2099 - $52.87 cashback , free delivery. Add $59 for 2yr onsite warranty.

    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 (8 GB GDDR5 dedicated)

As I said, I reckon this is a much better option then the Alienware. Gtx 1070, 512gb ssd and bigger screen. Probably saving more money in specs if you go for the HP deal.

  • wow… the user reviews on the jb site aren't too flattering..

  • wouldn't trust anything Dell produces, as when something fails you can't rely on them honouring their warranty.

Try dealing with their Escalation team!

  • For those who are interested, couple of these items available at Dell outlet for under $1,600. One is with 128gb ssd and slightly cheaper.
