While $479 may be a decent price, ‘reduced from $799’ is somewhat disingenuous.

Practically nowhere sells it for $799.

JB, Supercheap and Autobarn are all $499 (JB is $497).

  • Just a FYI, that's the retail price. And as you've checked, we're still the lowest price.

    • +5

Wow, a massive 4% savings. This is OzBargain, not OzFreeAdvertising. Youre going to have to do way better than misleading savings and clickbait titles.

      • -2

It's not clickbaiting mate, it's still what we posted on our site, it will be misleading if we are not in sync with what we have on the site.

  • +1

    Thanks OP.

    • +3

Downvoted by 3 sooky lalas for saying thanks …. 😕

      • +2

Thanks for what exactly? It's cheaper elsewhere as posted by others. Voting positive is a disservice to this site and community, as its just plain misleading and makes other people think there is a bragain where there isnt, and only further encourages more advertising and spam to get posted.

        • +1

Why don't you find us a deal instead of spamming other people posts.

        • +7

@nocure: I'd put more hope in jv posting a deal.

        • +1

Right with you. Kinda misses the whole point of this "community-curated" bargain blog to either flat out just advertise, or to upvote such.

    • Who are the knobs that negged TA? What is wrong with you?

  • products like these make me so sad that (even not-so) modern cars dont have DIN slots :(

would love to install one of these in my XR6T without major modding.

    • +5

It does suck but a surprising amount of vehicles have custom fascia kits available which provide double DIN mounts.
Converters are available for steering wheel controls.

The real problem are when A/C controls are integrated into the stereo, or when the vehicle has a second screen which communicates with the stereo. No way to get these to work with aftermarket units.

    • XR6T is modern?

      • i added "even not-so" but thanks for your glistening input. how's your brand new RS4?

        • It's pretty flat, I got it last week from the centre of this months wheels magazine….

  • +3

I just bought and installed one of these in our 2010 forester. Pretty happy with it.

    • Did you integrate steering wheel controls?

      Edit: also reversing camera?

      • +1

i did steering controls, havent bought a camera for it yet

        • Did it connect directly, or did it require a kit?

        • +1

          @3:

          definitely need the kit

        • +1

@3: Almost every car will require a harness and a fascia kit too.

        • +1

          @potplanty:

          true that.

Although I chose to NOT go the aeropro route. They suggest you buy one of these (as the stock subaru headunit is larger than double din):
          https://imgur.com/a/4kKFG
Which makes for a pretty nasty looking install: https://imgur.com/a/QAF8K

I ended up finding a full fascia replacement through aliexpress for about the same price delivered:
          https://www.seicane.com/black-double-din-car-radio-fascia-fo…

So this is my install: https://imgur.com/a/GZSYw

        • @ideasman: Oh damn that looks way better. May have to get that for my 2010 Impreza. Luckily the fascia for mine was only $20 so no big loss.

Does the original one just pull right off or is it screwed in somewhere?

        • @potplanty:
just pops straight off. easy to install, easy to steal

you gotta use the clips and vent unit from your current fascia (they click right into the replacement)

        • @ideasman: Thanks man. Gonna try ripping the face off during my lunch and see how easy it is. Will definitely grab that other face plate I think.

        • I installed one in my 2010 WRX without a separate kit, just need a spare 3.5mm audio plug and follow the wiring in https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/support-info.pl?info_id=1470

      • Just be careful with Sony. They recently changed their configuration for Steering Wheel Controls, and some SWC adapter kits won't work properly with Sony head units made in the last couple of years. The PAC SWI-CP2 definitely works with them, but not the PAC SWI-RC.

Problem being is whole car heating controls is through the factory unit, alpine do have a unit the keeps factory controls, however over 3000 to suit vf

    • Any manufacturer that does that shit should go die.

  • Is this the cheapest DIN with Apple CarPlay out in the market? Or does anyone know of one in the range of $200-300? Don't need Android Auto.

  • anyone know if these or the Clarion units have traffic reporting on the navigation units?

    • +1

Considering these don't have built-in navigation, it all comes down to what navigation app you use on your phone. If you're using Crapple then you're stuck with Apple Maps.

      • +1

Doesn't apple maps have traffic reporting now? I believe it does. I just personally use google maps out of habit, but have coworkers who use car play with apple maps and find it's now caught up in all the ways that really matter for in car navigation. Lane guidance and traffic. Google maps has the advantage when it comes to searching for specific shops and seeing reviews for those shops and average time spent there and phone numbers etc. But these are things I do on my phone and can't really see a need to do in a car so much.

  • -1

If you don't have reverse camera or steering wheel controls, alternative is to just use a tablet with Android Auto installed and bluetooth it to your car head unit.

    • -1

So I have to mount a tablet to my centre console on top of everything else? Seems a bit stupid. The whole point is being able to just look slightly left-of-centre and see everything you need. Not to mention that only works if your head unit already has BT.

      • Mounting a small 7" tablet in your car wouldn't be very difficult, it could easily sit in a suction/magnet mount. I added bluetooth to my car very simply with one of these, that can also be used to keep the tablet charged up:
        https://www.gearbest.com/car-charger/pp_366802.html

        • The legislation isn't the easiest to read but I'm pretty sure if you try using that while driving you will get pulled over and fined heavily whereas an inbuilt head unit won't have that same issue.

        • Fully licensed car drivers

Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, except to make or receive a phone call or to use its audio/music functions provided the phone:

          • Is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle, or
          • Can be operated by the driver without touching any part of the phone, and the phone is not resting on any part of the driver's body.

Using a phone as a navigational device/GPS while driving is prohibited unless it is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle. All other functions (including video calls, texting and emailing) are prohibited.

    • For less than $500? The tablet screen had better be pretty good with proper glare reduction film and very high brightness (and not be amoled) etc.

the pioneer 5050BT model is around $599 street price with a $100 pioneer cash back if anyone's interested.
was looking at head units last night.

    • +1

Nice, just found the Pioneer MVH-Z5050BT on Ryda.com.au for $548.85, then use XMAS17 to get an additional 10% off, brings it to $493.96 + 9.95 flat rate shipping, then factor in the $100 cash back. Pretty decent price.

      • imo the unit is better than the sony one :)

  • +1

Just installed one of these last week in my new 2017 Qashqai. It was $499 at Supercheap - bought using ultimate gift card from woolies (10% off) which were bought with 5% off wish gift card. Cost about $170 for the swc, facia kit, patch cable and antenna cable.

Overall the unit works pretty well. Takes about 10s to start up and then there is a warning screen that needs to be pressed before you can do anything. Reverse camera will turn on automatically before the system is booted fully if the car is put in reverse. AM radio isn’t working for some reason but that doesn’t bother me, I don’t use it.

Sound quality is pretty good with stock speakers. I use almost exclusively with carplay which is pretty good but does have its limitations (not Sony’s fault). Bluetooth connect fairly quickly and CarPlay boots up pretty much straight away once plugged in and is nice and responsive.

Installation was a little fiddley but got it to work too make 2 hours for me to do it. Had to connect it up to ignition so it will only turn on when engine is on and turn off straight away once off. I think that’s probably mainly due to my car but i didn’t do ignition the unit would stay on indefinitely and I would need to physically turn it off to standbye mode when leaving the car.

    • Do you need to plug your iPhone on its usb for CarPlay to work ?

      • +1

Yes it required USB to be plugged in

        • Don't know why Apple try to move away from cables (new iPhones works with wireless charger) and keep things like this requiring usb…

        • @Vitorll: it’s not so much Apple but the 3rd parties. Wireless carplay exists but uncommon at this stage/expensive.

I’m sure it will pick up down the track.

        • @chillybags: It's more the lack of bandwidth available on BT alone. For all the information needed to be transmitted (FLAC audio, navigation screens etc) it requires bandwidth that only USB (and some BT) can provide as of now. Once every single phone has BT 4.0 or above then we'll see completely wireless.

  • It’s a great head unit, but CarPlay is extremely unstableness on my iPhone 6 and very limited. Recommend Android Auto if you have that option. Head unit itself is really solid and smooth.
