NetGear Orbi High-Performance AC3000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi System $499 @ JB Hi-Fi ($399 with HN Price Match + AmEx)

80

Been looking around for a good deal on either the Google Wifi or Netgear Orbi RBK50. Local warranty, immediate availability and a further $100 off with AmEx (only for those who managed to sign up).

HN Supacenta actually price matched it down to $490 for me. I put the $499 in the title anyway as not all stores will necessarily do the same.

  • I nearly buy Netgear Orbi until I know that it doesn't support wired backhaul
Tho Netgear Orbi is still one of the best Wireless Mesh network devices
(However it does not perform better when the satiate station is wired)

    • I thought that has been added in a update….

    • I thought the point of buying these is for the wireless coverage so you can be free of wires. If wired performance is of concern to you, this is probably not what you're after.

      • It's to extend to an area you can't reach. Than you can and should connect a switch to it and cable up devices to the satellite. Wireless will never reach the same speeds.

    • The 'satiate station' is that the satellite unit?

You mean when a device is wired to the satellite unit, the performance will be no better than being wired to a range extender?

      • That'd not the case… I'm getting great speeds with devices connected to my Satellite.

        • Have you ever had drop outs?

        • @lostn:

Never. And to give an idea of how good that is, I tried the best ASUS routers and they couldn't get any signal to where this is reaching to the Satellite, and still providing a stable connection.

      • Just check on Netgear forum, I can confirm that the new firmware that comes with Wired Backhaul

        https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Announcing-availabilit…

In regards to your question, in the initial firmware the Satellite unit cannot be connected via wired network.
        See https://community.netgear.com/t5/Idea-Exchange-For-Home/Netg…

In the latest firmware, finally it is enabled which is great especially you have multiple Satellite units with both wired and wireless connection type.

  • How is this compared to Google WiFi ?. Need suggestions.

    • It's much better

      • People seem divided about that.

But I would prefer the Orbi because each unit has 4 ethernet ports, while GH only has 2. On the main one, one port will be used up by the internet, and the other to my desktop PC effectively giving me only one ethernet port.. then I have none left, and that's not enough for me.

        • That's where you buy a switch.

Regardless this is better, it has a dedicated backhaul channel and in speed tests its significantly better. Not to mention the range is phenomenal.

        • @scuderiarmani: I'm not buying extra things, especially when they need a power outlet. I'm using too many plugs already.

        • @lostn:
$10-20 isn't much. And it's worth it. Wifi on anything like Consoles or Android TV's is deplorable.

Network transfer speeds are a fraction of anything hard wired, even in the same room.

        • @scuderiarmani: It's not a money issue. I have too many things on my power strip already. I got a 6 port UPS connected to it, and all of those are used up too. I don't want the added clutter either.

If you get a router with enough ethernet ports, you can avoid it. I need a minimum 4 ports, and Google WIfi is only going to give 1 port.

        • @lostn:
Network speed should trump an extra power plug. I'll never go back to a standard router again.

        • Can you plug the other unit into ethernet or doesnt it only communicate on wifi to the main unit?

        • @asa79:
Read above, they just added Ethernet Backhaul

        • @scuderiarmani: Or an Orbi, which has 4 (3 useable).

Dwi has the 3 pack of Google WiFi for a pretty good price… I'm waiting to see if HN will drop their price before I commit

    • Will you need a travel adapter if buying from them?

      • believe you would

  • How many devices can you connect to this unit?

    • Something like 250.

      • Thats much better then the 16 of a normal router

  • anyone know if its better to get this setup, or the one with the single Orbi and the satellites??

    • If you need only one satellite, then this is the same setup.

  • There is a deal when it was 249USD on Amazon US, unfortunately, I missed that deal

    • Different voltage as well

      • Really? the only difference is the US plug. But the voltage is from 110-240V.

    • Likely will need international adapters which add to the already bulky power packs.

Also, international shipping wait and lack of local warranty.

  • If anyone is still looking, JB has reduced the base price to 399.20 (299.20 if you can price match with HN and still have the AmEx offer - which expires today).
