Awesome prices on these two previously popular GL.iNet WiFi 6 routers thanks to the 10% off codes redeemable on the listing and the extra 5% off with PayTo code.

The GL-MT6000 Flint 2 is the more high end home router offering with AX6000 WiFi 6 4x4 (2.4GHz: 1148Mbps, 5GHz: 4804Mbps), two 2.5GbE network ports with both being able to be used as WAN ports for a secondary connection, failover etc, four 1GbE LAN ports, USB 3.0 port, 4 antennas and a multi plug charger.

While the GL.iNet GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) is the more travel friendly option with AX3000 WiFi 6 (2.4GHz: 574Mbps, 5GHz: 2402Mbps), 2.5G WAN port, 1GbE LAN port, USB 3.0 and powered via USB-C.

These are particularly good due to OpenWrt compatibility, VPN support, Wireguard support, VLAN support and more. Possible use cases include AdGuard for network level adblocking, protecting yourself against unsafe networks such as hotel WiFi networks, or as dangerdanger describes a second WiFi network for the kids with Open DNS to filter out 'bad' content. I'm sure others can provide other suggestions in the comments.

  • That second wifi network is a good shout, thanks!

Bought the ax for the same price for my holiday and it's working very well. Getting 500mbps from any room in the hotel/apartment when plugged in on a fiber 1gb network (they had very thick walls in this example and I got 800mbps in the same room). The repeater works very well to boost weak networks but there was one place that had very weak and slow wifi and while it did make it reach to the other rooms it was still not enough to stream videos from YouTube. That's the fault of the hotel wifi connection of course but don't expect it to perform miracles. If you are using it wired or with a strong wifi source you will have a great time travelling and it will beat any stock router they provide.

  • Bought the Beryl AX before going to Europe, currently over here now using it and it's been great to jump onto the hotel/Airbnb WiFi.

Setup my Mullvad VPN connection on it so our phones and laptop all connect.

Haven't had any issues yet, almost two weeks in.

It's so small and lightweight. Very very happy with this little travel router, hell I might even use it at home as a separate network for some of my devices.

For anyone thinking of getting the Beryl AX, I recommend just saving up and getting the Slate instead. More reliable toggling roaming,.repeater AP, WireGuard/Open VPN, etc. as compared to Beryl AX where I find it drops out quite a lot

    How does the GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) compare to Mercusys MR47BE BE9300 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/914972?

What's your experience on using VPN/AdGuard on Flint 2? I'm using NordVPN/Express VPN/AdGuard VPN + AdGuard on my phone and need to temporarily turn them off almost everyday as some website features are broken or blocked, and more importantly, need to turn them off to use ShopBack/TCB/CR.

With VPN/AdGuard enabled at Router level, what do you do when websites are getting blocked/broken and when you need to use cashback sites? Do you have to turn off WiFi to use Mobile data temporarily?

    • Never had a broken website.

Took me about a year+ to build my blocklist, but no issues since.

Im running vanilla openwrt with AGH and CAKE SQM

    • Use something like nextDNS so you can whitelist things for adblocking instead of a VPN approach unless you really need to protect your IP/activities.

Running the VPN on the router level will have no difference in if things break (and its probably adguard that is breaking stuff anyway)

  • Anyone have any thoughts on the Flint 2 vs Asus RT-AX86U Pro? Tossing up between the two

    • How much each?

      • This deal ($174) vs ~$207 for the Asus.

        • +3

          Flint 2 for sure then.

    • +2

Was looking at an Asus router but found Flint 2 with same specs at half the price. Had it 17 months now, no problems, would buy another one in a heart beat.

    • +3

The Flint generally has better specs and is $45 less.

I have had that Asus for 3 years (got it for ~$400) and it's great, especially when upgraded with Merlin.

However, if I were buying now, I'd get the Flint.

      • Assuming price is relatively equal, what are the reasons you'd go the Flint 2 now over ax86u pro? I'm trying to make that very decision and also somewhat considering the tuf-ax6000.

This is for an average size single story brick home, 3 gamers, serving media to a couple of fire sticks, ring door bell at front gate, and all the usual devices in a 4 person family with teens.

Edit: last 2 routers have been Asus, so I probably am somewhat brand bias as they've had no issues, but current AC68U is a bit long in the tooth.

        • +4

The Flint has better hardware, The Asus apparently has better range.

I like Asus - they "just work" and also had a 68u before the 86.

          If you ask an AI:
          "
Choose the Flint 2 if you want advanced customization, high VPN speeds, and better value for multi-gig wired networks.

Choose the Asus RT-AX86U Pro if you want the best Wi-Fi range, easy mesh expansion, and robust built-in security and parental controls.
          "

    • I would get ASUS RT-AX86AU Pro for $229 over this.

      • Why? I'm trying to decide the same.

For those buying the Flint 2, I strongly recommend upgrading to the OpenWrt 24 version firmware: https://dl.gl-inet.com/router/mt6000/open

Things like QOS via SQM etc didn't work until I did that because I think nftables is needed, and not available on Openwrt 21.

Quick question re 2.5gb ports - ive heard NBN is going up to 2gb soon - my pc's LAN port is 1gb, but would i be correct in thinking i could plug in a USB dock/hub type thing that has a 2.5gb LAN socket and connect it to a router like the Flint 2? thx

    • +1

If it's a desktop you're probably better off with a PCIE 2.5g NIC compared to a USB one.

  • +3

Flint2 is a better option than the 3. The hardware on the 3 is too weak in comparison.

Bought one of the flint 2 from a previous deal, was hoping for some extra range and faster speeds. Worst router I’ve ever used. Connects but internet just goes out constantly on ever device, phones, laptops, iPads. Put old one router back and all stable. Biggest waste of money for me. Should’ve sent it back but never got around to it.

      wanna sell?

  • Quick question - will this work with a FTTP integrated network such as Opticomm/LBNCO? My current router just plugs into an ethernet wall socket, would the Flint 2 also work like that?

    • +3

Yes. You just need to plug into the WAN port from the NTD.
