Not bad - still would like to see sub $800 fares SYD-SFO like we saw for the end of last year.

    • We have seen $840 return on that route with VA a few weeks ago.

Keep an eye on this page and when they do come up you will see them.

      http://www.flightscout.co/au/cheap-flights/sydney-australia-…

      • Under 800 is the big bargain imo. I snagged

SYD - > SFO (via LAX)
SEA - > SYD (via LAX)

For $720 (plus zuji cashrewards) on Virgin/Delta flying November last year.

Thats the best deal I've ever seen - but I suspect some fresh competition from Fiji, United as well as QF/AA could see some really good fares soon.

If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there

Have you ever been to San Francisco?

      • +1

Not sure if this is serious question or not?

        • Sorry I forgot to add the note.

Have you ever been to San Francisco? 🎵

      • +1

Yes. You should go to the Tenderloin, everyone is super gentle there.

        • +1

My first stay was in Tenderloin - thanks Priceline.com!!!
(our hotel instructed us to turn left when exiting the building, not right)

        • +1

          @muncan:

My first stay was also the Tenderloin!
Arrived and got out the taxi and we were instantly abused by some woman being 'techies creating cyborgs for profit'. Had lots of other people just yelling and fighting outside all night. That kind of stuff, but I still really liked it there.
Plus they have Brenda's in the Tenderloin, one of the best fried chicken I've ever had.

  • fantastic offer

  • +1

yeh they are regularly under $900 return on here from sydney. Haveseen one sub $800 a few months ago, am waiting for another to

    • +1

For only $100 difference what matters is the dates. If the dates are good for you now grab it. Next sale the dates are usually different

      • Price can matter more especially when you need 4 tickets or so. Thats a saving of $400 which is decent. We have friends over there so dates arent an issue

    • The cheapest we have seen Sydney to SFO in the past 2 months is $840 return with Virgin, $796 with Fiji airways. If you watch this page you will see the deals as they come through;

      http://www.flightscout.co/au/cheap-flights/sydney-australia-…

      • $796 again would be perfect

        • If you watch that link and when they do drop you will see them, also there is the option of LAX and driving up :)

          http://www.flightscout.co/au/cheap-flights/sydney-australia-…

        • Don't go Fiji Air, the seats are tiny and the stop over in Nadi is boring! VA direct for $50 is worth it!

        • @Nalar: unless you’ve got a Priority Pass 😉

        • @muncan: Does it make the 3 hour stopover at 6am any quicker?

        • @Nalar: Absolutely. Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity states that tug of gravity in the PP lounge distorts the time continuum to observers within the PP lounge, compared to those who are not.
Ergo drinks go down; time go fast.

  • OP, when generally the sales for late October/early Nov for the US normally start appearing?

Planning on taking the family over for Halloween.

    • +2

Its hard to predict when the airlines will discount fares the best thing to do is watch our site and it will tell you each day what the lowest price is on any route and which dates are discounted.

      • How about accomodation in SF for people in Oz that don't have friends over there?
Is it all pricey hotels? Or questionable Air BnB?

  • Good deal. Looking for similar prices for MEL-LAX on VA in June, hoping they come up.

September/October is a good time of year to be in San Francisco.

San Franciso itself is a great walking/public transport city, but it is steep and hard on the legs. If you do the trolley cars the queues will be long but riding on the running boards is the most fun, particularly if you can get the front position and see the view from the front.

Lots of good museums and restaurants.

My suggestions around San Francisco are:
    - Yosemite,
    - Monterey
    - The coast road down to LA.

        Not compulsory.

        • Is it recommended?

@Kangal: by me, or by the good people of San Francisco?

    • +1

Last year we did Route 1 up to Portland then onto Seattle - really enjoyed it, plenty to see and do - apparently the less touristy bit of the road (vs heading south to LA) but can't comment on that.

      • +2

We have friends who love Seattle, we haven't done that bit. We didn't have trouble with crowds going between San Francisco and LA; however, I suspect it would be the more crowded part. The aquarium at Monteray is brilliant, the sea otters are worth the price of admittance. They take in sick and injured ones and rehabilitate the ones they can and keep safe the ones they can't. When we were last there, which was a while ago, they were demonstrating how they use a rod with a ball on the end, and food rewards, to allow them to focus the sea otters so they check their physical condition. What was hilarious was the ones behind the demonstrator that were stealing fish out of the bucket whilst she was talking.

  • Anything from Adelaide? :)

Would any of these be eligible for upgrades later through points?

    • Also curious.

      • You would have to check your situation yourself but many cheaper Virgin are not upgradable, and the ones that are you often need to be gold flyer or above. Often best just to buy flights with points outright.

  • Also curious, as to why Australia is selling their virgins to San Francisco ?

  • I scored Qantas fares to Chicago via San Francisco last month for $845 return for travel in July. That's the best I've seen.

  • Hey rep, any suggestions how to get a cheaper Christmas flight? I need two. Like 23rd.

    • +1

Christmas flights are never cheap, and booking this late you're really going to have to take it on the chin

      • I agree but we've seen some fluctuation in time of day accessing the site and source IP - apparently they're pretty tricky with all that stuff, with cookies and what have you. If you're interested, they jack that price.

  • Everything comes up no flights left…. Expired?
