I run Home Assistant for home automation on mine. Also have another running PiHole.

      • Could you please share the link for guide/blog post you used to setup Home Assistant.

I have just ordered my first one and was thinking of running PiHole to start with.

        • +2

It can be a little confusing as Home Assistant can be set up as a Virtual Machine or as a service. I initially had mine set up as a VM but I had difficulty also having Pi Hole running.

I don't have all the details with me now, but I'm essentially running headless Raspbian installed with NOOBS and then I installed Pi Hole and HA separately.

The easiest HomeAssistant installation is Hassio. You basically copy the Hassio image onto a SD card, put it in your RaspberryPi and off you go.

Here are some guides to get you started:

        • @tonyamazing:
          Thanks. Will have a go.

        • @kazzman:
          Thanks mate.

        • +1

@djshitu: I think Hassio, whilst it's probably the easiest and most feature rich, is actually a Linux distribution, which is why I had difficulty installing Pi Hole because it technically wasn't supported.

        • +2

@tonyamazing: Hassio now has a PiHole addon :)

        • @kazzman: cheers man, this is what I need for all my xiaomi automation

        • @kazzman: Did not know that! Might get around to re-imaging one day soon. Thanks.

        Pi doesn't support hardware-accelerated MPEG2 - needs a license purchase; nor, HD Audio pass-through.

        • who's playing MPEG2 encoded stuff these days m8? literally no one, even tv broadcasts moved away from it long ago

        • @donkey:

          who's playing MPEG2 …

All DVDs and SD DVB-T TV broadcasts.

I use one for OctoPi (controlling a 3d printer) and others for projects like automating christmas lights.

I put it with the other SSD/SD/Xiaomi etcs in the drawer and image one day I lost job, then I could start to play with them.

    • 3d printing print server.

      (see octo print)

Was using it as a media center as it has CEC, but still not quite there.

with a decent os, you can use them like a linux PC, good for basic surfing etc, so basically a very light weight PC (if you get all the peripherals) , that doesn't chew much power…

    • as a server running 24/7 control the house as a smart hub (by having all the device setted up beforehand)

Torrent client. Computer for doing stuff that isn't gaming.

    • I have mine hooked up to my 3D printer so that I can control it wireless, and with a reverse proxy I can control & monitor it over the internet.

  • Thanks, grabbed a case!

  • If I wanted to give this to a 11 year old for a present what else do I need to get him started.

    Any clues appreciated :-)

    • +1

Any peripherals and storage that you or they do not yet have. Raspberry Pi on it's own can't do much. Mine doesn't have a display but that's because I can SSH from my PC. If they don't have a PC then they may need keyboard, mouse and monitor.

It'll definitely need at least one microSD card to store an OS.

Here's a quick list. Hopefully you/he already have most of these available.

      • A micro SD memory card to hold an operating system. I think 4GB is require for NOOBS.
      • Access to a PC with a micro SD card reader to install an operating system on the memory card.
      • USB keyboard
      • USB mouse
      • TV or monitor with HDMI input. 1080p is best.
      • HDMI cable.
      • USB power supply with micro USB cable. 2.5A is best. You can get started with an old phone charger that does 1.5A, but it may struggle to power USB peripherals.

not much if he has a keyboard, mouse, hdmi screen and phone charger …… idea of pi was always low cost and use stuff people already have even in poor countries …..

I work as a teacher & we use them for Grade 10 robotics projects.

There is a growing awareness in Australia that kids have become consumers of technology but not active participants. What you are doing is a great step for him.

Apart from what everyone else said, I would

      1. get him to install and learn the Linux environment http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-reasons-start-kids-off-linux/

      2. install and run scratch https://scratch.mit.edu/

    • Bugga - expired already

Thanks for the feedback and guidance anyway

  • One lives under my TV cabinet - it runs dietpi with:

TVHeadend (with Sony PlayTV USB twin tuner) - Free-to-air TV server for streaming around the house / recording
Pihole - ad blocking DNS server
Kodi - headless - just running to keep the SQL database up-to-date

  • Expired? :(

  • any pi zero w deals? will those ever get featured?
