Telstra $10 Sim Starter Kit for $5 at Coles (1GB of Data on Prepaid Extra Offer + 9GB of Data in data bank which doesn't expire)

220

Activate one of these kits on the Telstra Prepaid Offer by the 26th of February 2018 to get a total of 10GB of data (1GB of data to use in 7 days plus 9GB in the data bank which can be revived with a recharge even after the last recharge has expired) You also get 7 days of unlimited calls and text messages.

This is still a pretty good deal even if you don't need so much data by the 26th of February - because of the 9GB being in the data bank, you can activate it before the 26th of February, let the 7 days expire and then do a $10 recharge when you do need to use the data - it'll give you 28 days expiry and you can use the $10 to put another 1GB into your data bank. (Keep in mind that Telstra Prepaid Sims generally expire completely about 6 months after the last recharge expires, so you would need to do a $10 recharge twice a year to keep the sim alive)

Additional ideas for if you've got Telstra recharge credit that you can no longer use on Google Play:

If you use a fair bit of data and would like to go for something a little more convenient and don't mind spending some additional cash:

  • Purchase a $10 sim card
  • Activate the Sim Card on Extra to get 1GB + 9GB bonus already in the data bank
  • Switch to the Long Life Offer.
  • Send Credit to new sim card using CreditMe2U
  • Recharge $30 or $70 to get 6 or 12 months expiry respectively
  • Switch back to Extra
  • Purchase data straight into the data bank for 2.5GB per $20

Doing the above, you could convert $250 of recharge credit (plus $6.25 in Credit Me2U fees) plus $75 of cash into an Extra SIM with 49 GB of data and 12 months to use it in. (I'm not counting the initial 1GB of data which would expire before you've finished the above process) Don't put the sim card into a phone while it's on the Long Life offer as it'll chew through credit at $2 per MB!

Another option if you need even more data and don't mind mucking around a fair bit is to buy a number of $10 SIM cards and activate them on Extra for the 9GB of bonus data – before the 26th of February 2018. Whenever you want to use a fair chunk of data, switch a SIM to Simplicity, transfer $10 of credit, switch back to Extra and convert the $10 to 1GB of data, so you've then got 10GB in the data bank and 14 days to use it. It's not clear how long the recharge only period is for Extra, but assuming that it's 6 months, you would need to do this for each SIM card every 6 months to prevent it from being deactivated. If CreditMe2U is discontinued or Extra is grandfathered, you would then have to recharge each SIM with $10 of real money every 6 months to keep them alive or to access the data bank…

  • thanks for sharing, so, in theory, the 9 gb in data bank can stay for 6 months? and the minimum recharge is $10?

    • +2

Yes, you'll have up to 6 months to do another recharge to regain access to the 9GB of data. If you do a recharge, you'll then reset the 6 months period, so you should be able to continue doing that pretty much indefinitely.

$10 is the minimum recharge when you go to recharge. You used to be able to buy $5 recharge vouchers at Telstra shops but I don't know if you can still buy them. $5 isn't enough to buy a data pack, so other than resetting the 6 month expiry and maybe having access to the data for a short period, you wouldn't get much benefit from a lower value recharge…

  • Meh. They just had $10 sims included with $9 phones. Bring back the $30 starter kit for $5. With netflix carrier billing.

    • +1

Yes, but do you get 10GB of data with those $10 sims - If I recall correctly, they don't work the same as the retail $10 sim cards unfortunately.

I was thinking about buying one of the $9 phones just to try it but I never got around to it!

      • +3

No you don't get 10gb of data with those $9 phones.

I bought one for my son and you get about 10 voice calls for that $10 of credit . Thankyou ebay for the $2 unlock and Aldi mobile for the 365day credit .
This actually seems like really good value from Telstra .
FYI those $9 phones are almost nokia 3310 in epicness . I put my sons through the washing machine and it lived :)

        • +1

Wow, your washing machine must be very big.

Woolworths have the 8gb for $30 telstra pre paid for half price too (noticed it today) and wasn't sure wether it was a good deal or not? Took a picture so can always post it :)

    • I believe that it's actually 7.5GB - 2.5GB of data valid for 28 days and only 5GB of data in the data bank. If data is the main criteria, I think that the $10 sim cards are better value - even at full price…

      • +2

Not sure - this is the link to the photo

        • OK, according to that picture, it's 8GB of data on the mobile broadband offer (won't provide any call or text allowance and will probably only have limited roll over)

Coles now have $30 for $10 with 10 gigs

      • Looks like only 5GB bonus for the $30 sim pack, so 7.5GB all up to use as well as unlimited for 28 days.

  • I've got a few friends coming from overseas so this seems perfect for them!

So to confirm, it's $5 for 10GB of data total but for the first 7 days you only have access to 1GB of data and then if you recharge say $5, you get access to the remaining 9GB?

    • +4

You can access the whole 10GB during the initial 7 day period and then throw the sim card in the bin if you want to!

      • OH, that's awesome then!

So if they need to extend its use past 7 days, what's the best recharge method? Get another one of these $10 sims and recharge their existing sim using its code?

        • +1

No - you can't use a starter kit to recharge an existing service.

Cheapest option would probably be to stock up on a few of these kits for $5 each and activate a new one each 7 days - unless it's going to be for an extended period of time and the data use is going to be significantly less than 40GB of data per month…

        • @OnTheMark:

Ahh I see. Thanks for all your help mate :)

Thing is most Coles don't have this starter kit in stock at all, even when it was $10 let alone half price now.
As the Chinese will go in and buy them in stacks of 20 at 1 go like how they purchase tin milk powder with no consideration for others also wanting to buy.

    • +1

Well arnt you just a racist, the ONLY reason it's mostly Asian people is they have the contacts to sell it over there. If not for that it would just be free for all and you would get none…

      • +2

Please don't place the racism card. As my mate Mal says, zhongguo renmin zhanqilai le.

        • +5

Considering I'm of italian/English/scandanavian background it would be polite to translate. Please :)

Also I'm super unpoliticly correct, view some of my comments. I'm just sick of the baby formula BS, if the white majority could send it to sale in China they would be…

        • +1

          @Slippery Fish:

Whinging about something that some Chinese people do is not racism. Your comment that whites would do the same (I'd say immigrants are more entrepreneurial) given the opportunity does not negate what he says. He is not saying "The people buying out the powder are Chinese therefore all chinese are terrible", no. He is saying that some of them are Brodens.

If I complain about Chinese people spitting on the street or ignoring "no smoking" signs, am I racist? Do I even need to add the obvious "of course most chinese here don't do that"?

  • Doesn't appear to be available in WA, not on their WA catalogue, only the Optus $30 pack for $10.

I found the $10 Telstra sim pack for $6 at Hardly Normal if that's more convenient for anyone, about 10 left at Cannington HN. https://www.harveynorman.com.au/telstra-10-pre-paid-sim-star…

Edit: I stand corrected. Updates qty at HN Cannington.

  • Can these be put on special $5 again please, thanks. Need 1 to move Freedom+ credit onto Extra<>Long Life account.

  • I put the sim in a telstra 4gx modem and only got 1gb. Chat support said i activated it incorrectly. Any ideas? Seems strange as i just followed the prompts.

    • Which offer did you activate it on?

If you activated it on anything other than Prepaid Extra, there's no data bank for the bonus data to go into…

      • Ok thanks. I had trouble activating it through an ipad and probably picked the wrong one.
