It also has a USB C charging port and a really nice screen

    • also it's waterproof! the camera is the only thing that could have been better.

      • Yeah. I've got a Moto g5 plus but probably would've gotten this for the price! Only $90 more

        • Which one has better camera?

        • +1

          @tranter: definitely the A5

Price beat at OW for extra 5% off

Thanks for that reminder. We were at JB Hi-Fi earlier this morning and almost pulled the trigger. Now I've got an even happier girlfriend!

  • very good batter life too

    • +2

      How much batter?

      • im a heavy user, easily lasts for a whole day and still have around 30% left at 10pm, umpluged at 7am

        • I second that. if I use it heavily, lasts whole day with about 30% left.

        • +10

But is there enough to make fish and chips?

  • Any thought on how this compares to Motorola g5 plus? (similarly priced)
    Thanks!

    • ip69 water proof, excellent screen and quality cameras (both front and back 16MPs), very long batterh life. would get it over moto g

      • The cameras shouldn’t be described as quality. They aren’t bad but are also not ‘quality’.

Bright light they work well but low light is no good.

Fingerprint scanner is average. Can only register 3 fingerprints. Make sure you set it up correctly otherwise you’ll get frustrated; quick. Somewhere between the S5’s swipe scanner and the S7’s fairly decent scanner.

Fantastic battery life even with the Always Display on. Though that comes with the balance of performance. It gets a bit stuttery but not much worse than most Grace UI devices.

      • IP68 for the A5

    • and Samsung Pay too

    • My g4 lasted a year, lens glass had tint that scratched off. Then touch screen started operating on auto pilot which can be embarrassing depending on what would switch on. Not to mention the sluggish performance of a budget phone.

My point is why buy a cheaper phone once a year or two years when you could buy a premium phone that will last you potentially 5 or more and runs well for most of that period.

  • Where can we buy local stock with similar price for Motorola G5 Plus? I would trust Samsung better than Lenovo-Motorola

  • Thinking of getting this.
What are the downsides of this phone? It seems to have pretty much everything.

    • +1

      Probably camera. But it's usable

      • cool. if that's all then I'm sold on this. seems to be good value?

        • At this price it's ridiculously good

    • downside is it doesn't work too well when my son drops it on the tiles running down the hallway and the screen bleeds after my wife only had it for about 4months.

      hope this helps

      • +1

thanks and noted. will need to take good care of it.

        • Ok so i could be wrong because me and numbers are horrible.. but check my comment with calculations below if you wanted to pick one up

New screen from Samsung is $230

    • +1

My Galaxy A has made a lifetime Galaxy A customer of me. There's no reason to buy anything else.

  • Damn, bought the same phone on eGlobal for $388 the other day. That's just bad timing I suppose.

    • Is eGlobal legit? They look shady and untrustworthy

      • bought a few phones from them before. never had any issues other than slow delivery

  • should price match at HN and get a $22 or more item for $100 Amex credit :)

if you want to price beat this, better to go with Good Guys over Officeworks if you don't care about the instant cashback. Good Guys has this for $528,
    $528-$375 = $153 (difference)
$153*1.2=$183.6 (GG Price beat policy 120% of difference)
    $528-183.6= $344.4
Choose click and collect, and you'll also get $50 credit for your troubles.
    Phone ends up being $294.40

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/349848

    • Thanks for the maths.

I think I'll still stick with JB (as there aren't any officeworks near me) using 5% off gift cards (entertainment book) and hopefully the coupon from this deal comes in time. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/345333.

Just had a quick browse on OZB and the feedback regarding the price beat isn't great and I don't want to risk it :P https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/147292 but I don't see any problem with it.
Also, note that the refund comes in GG credit and same as the $50 credit, so it's good if you have something else to buy (I guess there'll eventually be something good to buy there though).

    • How do you get the price-match if you're doing the purchase online??

      • you buy it for its retail from TGG and then you process the link provided with your receipt and i guess a screenshot of the competitors price. Then TGG will issue a 120% refund of the difference. It's a company-issued refund whereas if you went into the store and asked for a price match, it's coming out of the stores pocket.

  • Hi Team OZB,

Anyone know how this compares to the Samsung J7 Pro?

    Thanks.

    • Watch the tonnes of comparison videos online

The A5 is cheaper than the J7 even though the A5 is cost more soooooo pretty good deal. the A5 has waterproofing and fast charging unlike J7

  • If you get this phone, I highly recommend the official Neon Flip Cover at The Good Guys for $25 (half price) to go along with it. Bought one at the start of the year with a cheaper case, but this one was leaps and bounds better and feels great with the smart close - https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/samsung-galaxy-a5-2017-neon-f…

Saw at least a couple in stock at Nunawading last night, so there is still stock around.

  • Pretty good deal. Thinking of getting the phone even when it was $500 before but even with the price drop the Honor 7X for $300 AUD better value imo

    • +1

      Do it
      Brilliant phone for the price

      Bloody amazing

I have an iPhone X (personal) and a Samsung A5 (work).

Both good phones, but at this price I could buy six of the A5’s almost the same price as my iPhone X.

      No-brainer. Solid performer

  • I've just compared this and an ZTE Axon 7 together at my local store, almost same price but the Axon 7 looked a much better buy.

    • Does that ZTE Axon 7 have band 28,700? Officeworks says not.
Bought an offshore S6 recently without this band and got caught out driving in the country.

      • For the Australian version it states,

        • ZTE A2017G
          TD-LTE:Band 38/40/41
          FDD-LTE: Band 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/19/20/28AB
          UMTS: Band 1/2/4/5/8
          GSM: Band 2/3/5/8

        Is that what your after?

        • +1

          Thanks for the reply.

  • Thanks, price matched with HN no worries.

Purchased from Officeworks with extra 5% off, great price compared to their in-store price of $499!

Nougat update is available out of box and Samsung said the phone would get Oreo update as well.

  • noooo I missed the deal! I was gonna go pick it up in the morning. I need a new phone my Nexus 6 is becoming unbearable.

Any other greats deals I might expect on boxing day or thereabouts?

    • Me too, I'd been eyeing this off for days and finally had the chance to get to JB this morning. Hopefully we'll see even better deals following Christmas.

      • I just got it! jb still had the price up despite it being finished and they honoured it. so still might be worth visiting your local jb
