  • This deal isuch better than the Lenovo E570P deal

    • +6

this has a 1060 6gb lol and performs heaps better than 1050TI

      • +1

not to mention that 1050TI only has 2GB

        • I have the 1050Ti version and it's 4GB.

      • At least 50% better in most cases.

  • Good deal, but only 8Gb RAM. this is the only one negative point. is it easy to add one 8Gb RAM by myself?

    • +3

Yes - I have the laptop myself but am still using 8GB RAM. There’s a single screw on the bottom plate which requires a small Phillips screwdriver, impossible to lose the screw because it’s built in.

Just buy the exact RAM, and slide it into the ram slot.

      • I bought this laptop in the last sale. Quite impressed so far. The stock RAM was Micron, so I just bought Crucial RAM (same company). Will see if it allows dual channel.

      • +2

Got your 2TB SSHD coming from Amazon to fit into this… remind others that this only takes a max of 7mm HDD, we found out the hard way with the Segate Samsung spin point 2TB which is 9.5mm

    • +3

8GB RAM isn't too bad. You could get away with 8GB for quite some time. The 6GB in the GPU helps in graphical environments. It all depends on your use cause really.

A good rule of thumb I use when helping people decide what computer to buy: If you aren't specifically aware of what you are going to be doing that needs more than 8GB of memory - you probably don't need more than 8GB

    • Takes 20s. Anyone can do it. By far the easiest upgrade you can do to a PC or laptop.

  • Dam this would of been a extreme bargain if it was the 7700hq.
    I there way awesome price.

  • Hi guys,

I have the following issue :

"This code can't be applied to your order."

Anyone has the same problem ?

    Cheers !

    • +1

Because my account was not created in Australia many many years ago … :(

  • I don't really game on PC these days except for indie / old stuff which tends to be not very demanding on the specs, so correct me if I'm wrong here, but 256Gb hard drive doesn't seem like very much for a "gaming" PC? My PS4 came with 500Gb which wasn't nearly enough so I swapped that for 1Tb, and I'd assume that PC installs would probably be bigger due to higher resolution textures etc?

    • 256GB isn't that much. My Steam library is pretty small, I only have CS:GO, L4D, L4D2, Halo online, Borderlands 2 etc and I don't think there would be much room left after a Windows install.

    • +2

$100 for a 1tb HDD. Easy install. I have this laptop. Just make sure your HDD is 7mm thick.

      • -1

Yeah, but what I'm getting at is that if they're pushing it as a gaming laptop then you'd think it would make more sense to have the 1tb HDD in there by default for the same price, since that would be better suited to the size of modern game installs. As opposed to having a 256gb SSD that many people are going to have to ditch and pay more to replace it with a higher capacity drive?

        • +3

There's not ditching or replacing involved. There's space for two HDDs, the stock NVMe M2 one and another SATA one.

        • +2

@oscarmanutdfan: Damnit… now there is no reason for me not to get one :(

      • Howdy, sorry to necropost in an expired deal, but I recently picked up this laptop and want to install an HDD. Any info you give on how to go about this? What HDD did you install? Is it just as easy to put a second SSD in there instead of an HDD?

        • I would think it should be the same. As long as the SSD is 7mm thick, it'll use the same SATA ports as a HDD and otherwise act the same.

  • -7

FYI. In comparison 8th generation processors are about 90% faster than the 7th generation. I found this information online and they said the latest generation is a 2 to 3 year leap from 7th generation.

    • +2

That’s regarding the U processors, the 7300HQ is also a quad core whilst being more tuned towards performance than battery life and efficiency, it would probably perform better than the 8th Gen U processors still.

      • +2

Yeah, the naming of the Intel CPUs is hard to follow. But this is correct information. the 7300HQ is a very powerful little unit, but it's gonna cost you in battery life compared the 8th gen.

      • -2

To clarify I am not comparing with the lenovo deal. I am just saying 8th generation is a lot faster than 7th. So comparison should be on 8th gen U with 7th gen U. I thought of sharing the information I know about 8th gen to the community so that ppl can make informed choices but got negged :(

        • +2

If you compare like for like 7th and 8th gen CPUs models (eg https://ark.intel.com/compare/122589,95451), the 8th gen have double the core count. About twice the performance (in multi threaded workloads) is expected, but that is largely synthetic results and not necesarily a true reflection of real world performance.

        • From what I understand, the thing about the 8th gen U series is the kind of performance you get at the efficiency and battery life it offers. I don't know if they're "a lot faster" (like 90% faster) in comparison to the 7th gen U series for everyday usage though.

Depends on what you're using the laptop for (e.g. this i5-7300HQ is better for gaming I reckon). If you think you'll need/use those extra cores and performance, go for it. But for simple tasks (e.g. browsing), idk if it's worth the higher price at this point.

        • With no 8th generation equivalent of the 7300HQ available, saying it will be twice as powerful is just conjecture and not exactly helpful advice.

        • -1
        • +1

          please check this [link]

For the comparisons that were tested (i5-7200U vs i5-8250U and i7-7500U vs i7-8550U), you can definitely say that those 8th gen processors are faster than their 7th gen equivalents.

I am just saying 8th generation is a lot faster than 7th

As c0balt mentioned, there's no 8th gen equivalent of the 7300HQ to compare it with. Therefore, I think it's misleading to make such a statement when it comes down to what comparison you're making.
For instance, if we compare the 8250U to the 7300HQ (they're similar enough with 4 cores each), the 7300HQ seems to perform a bit better (albeit more power-hungry). Therefore, you can't say the same thing here, which is why I think the statement is misleading.

In any case, it's definitely not a deal-breaker. This 7300HQ is perfectly fine for the intended use of this laptop (gaming), and I personally wouldn't pay more for an 8250U or 8350U.

          Edit: Fixed formatting

    • +3

I have this laptop, and speeds are fine. SSD is fast, quick and smooth starting up the laptop and going straight to chrome. I don’t think you will notice a difference

Also as others said it’s a quad core cpu

  • I read on Kotaku the one with 1050ti is also on sale, making it 1119 AUD.
Is it worth the extra dollars for 1060?
Or should i just get the one with 1050ti and put another SSD/HDD on it?

    • Yes. The 1060 is significantly faster than the 1050ti, much more futureproof.

    • +1

Personally the GTX 1060 6gb is my recommended minimum gpu to aim for all types of gaming now in 2017 and 2018 unless you know you won't use it like say only playing older games then even a GTX 1050 non ti will be sufficient.

Do you wanna play the latest and greatest then GTX 1060 6gb minimum.

      • im running my HD2600 but ati wont support it in win10 :(

        • Bummer dude. Yeah technology moves fast these days. Stuff becomes outdated as soon as it leaves the shop and sometimes not even haha lol.

That's some nostalgic retro gear now haha put it in a museum..

It makes my Radeon HD 4800 from 2008-2009 look new lol.

        • @AlienC: Im happy with the rest of the laptop though, running smooth for a long time now. Are you able to help with any of my questions at the bottom of the thread? Im so tempted by this deal tbh..

  • This deal is also available in Beijing Red at the link below. I got the red one last time this deal ran and it's a great device - the photos of the red lid don't do it justice.

great notebook, bought this on the last deal at similar price and upgraded the ram and added a 2TB hybrid drive immediately.

    • Do new HDDs usually come with the screws required, or do I need to buy screws at Bunnings for the hard drive caddy?

      • +1

new hdd dont come with the screws required, but i installed my hdd without any additional screws.

        • You didn't need a few to secure it in the caddy?

        • @oscarmanutdfan: comes with them pre installed in the caddy

  • +4

Love this laptop, highly recommended, a gaming laptop disguised as a business laptop

  • would this be okay for oculus vr with extra sensor?

    • I think it says it’s VR-Ready on the Dell website. Not too sure with extra sensor may work

      • extra sensor requires extra bandwidth - on some pcs you require an additional usb card.

  • why haven't I seen this! End up buying an Alienware R3 for 1600 from Dell outlet

    • No they don’t, cooling is great. Temps are cool but doesn’t get that hot towards the top. You should try it yourself .

    • mine runs pretty cool so far and I use it for photoshop and lightroom as well.

  • I was recently looking for 1060 6gb laptop, but even MSY doesn't have anything below 1900.

end up with Alienware R3 15 refurb, for $1650, I do get 16gb ram and 7700HQ, but I would spend 300 less and get this if I would have seen this earlier

    • Hi man. where did you buy??

      Thanks

      • dell outlet

  • How is the battery life on this?

    • About 4-5 hours regular use of browsing internet, about 1-2 hours of full on gaming, and 8 hours full battery on battery saver mode (came up as estimated 8 hours for me)

  • I've got the 1050ti version, great laptop. Boots quickly and handles XCOM 2 at highest detail. Fans create moderate noise when gaming.

  • Would this be okay for 4k video editing?

    • If you have another external 4k screen to connect to, yes.

      DISPLAY: 15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display

Otherwise you won't be able to see content above 1080p.

  • Is the screen good for photo/video editing? Anti-glare screen seems matte look, glossy screen may be better?

    • It’s an anti-glare screen, so it should be fine.

Will there be an import tax?

  • Good deal thanks,
1.Are there any options on checkout to add ram or extend dell warranty?
2.If no, would anyone know if the dell site would match their ebay store?
    3. Interesting Dell list their network port as a slot (RJ 45), I would have called it a port.

    • This is a good question, no import tax???? Anyone plz help

    • You will probably have to talk with dell on the phone or their online chat to extend the warranty on eBay. I got mine off Dells site

  • Dammit im tempted!

Hey you guys will it take this as a 2nd drive? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/351151

Says 6.8mm but just checking with ppl smarter than me to be sure

    • Yep, just no thicker than 7mm

  • No import tax? Dont really need another laptop and that tax would be a simple deal killer.

    • Not sure about import tax, might have to contact dell customer support

      • In chat with them atm.

    • It's being sold by Dell Australia, why do you pay import tax??

      • Their warehouse is in Malaysia so it ships from there

        • Dells main website chat reckons def no duty through them or their delivery network but he can't confirm ebay site. Sent message twice now to ebay dell but no reply. Surprised with all the upvotes on this thread and being one of the best laptop deals going that nobody can confirm, guessing though with Christmas and all that this thread is gonna be buried anyway soon.

I really wanna pull the trigger on this great deal but that Malaysian warehouse thing has me stumped. Who wants to get an surprise duties bill from the gov..

*btw tried to get Dell to pricematch and best they'll do is $1699

  • +1

Well Dell ebay confirmed no duty payable. Question is whether to hold out for 1070 maxQ which is approx 40% upgrade on the GTX 1060 maxQ (according to Notebookcheck). Personally not really in a rush

    • -1

Wouldn't the test be whether or not you're already paying (Australian) GST on the item?

  • -3

I was tempted as well until i saw the malaysia warehouse (dont want to muck around with custom) - end up getting Acer Predator Helios 300 from harvey norman for 1796 , bit pricier but come with i7-7700HQ, 16GB ram , 128GB + 1Tb HD and a VR head set

  • Any i7 on sale?

  • Anybody know if I can get Windows 7 running on this?
