A bit old and heavy (and quite thick) but a very capable phone and good seller. Good deal at this price if you want a big screen and don't mind its weight and thickness.

    • +19

Its an antique by todays standards, it was released in 2015 as a mid/low ranger. Any Xiaomi would beat it as this price point.

      • +2

Only upside is nfc nothing else

      • +14

I read the comments for helpful tips like the two above. Helps a phone noob like me know which phone to avoid or get. Thanks. Merry Christmas!

    • the camera is not in par with xiaomi as well

64 GB rom is nice tough

      • +2

Depends which Xiaomi I have this before and I am using G6 now.

The camera is OK better than Xiamoi red note 4

The only problem is no android update.

        Agreed too heavy too thick

        • It looks like it is supported by LineageOS (could be considered to be the successor to CyanogenMod), which is Android 7.1.2.

I was unable to determine which variant of the ZE551ML they are offering, but if it's Z008, Z00A, or Z00D, then it should be fine.

See https://download.lineageos.org/ under "Asus" in the menu on the left for more details…

      • +2

When are people going to stop calling it ROM? How useful would it be if you couldn't write to the 64Gb?

    • -2

      wtf no deal xD

    • i've never had anyone complain about thickness

  • How does this compare with the Moto G5S plus. I know its like double the price but is it worth the difference??

    • +4

They seem pretty identical maybe just Google the gpu and cpu against each other to see which is better.

      https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=6917&idPhone2…

The Moto G5S Plus has a better video camera and front facing secondary camera or selfie camera.

The Asus has WiFi ac and the Moto G5S Plus doesn't only up to WiFi n so range and overall speeds if transferring large files over WiFi is important might affect you with WiFi ac being much faster and better range imho.

Asus slightly thicker otherwise mostly the same size and weight.

The Motorola being newer might receive updates for longer and quicker so really I think that is the price deal breaker also band 28 for Telstra network.

If the Asus is Taiwan version then it has band 28 otherwise no band 28.

      Both charge via microUSB 2.0

Screen quality wise they are both exactly the same Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and everything down to the sizes 1080 x 1920 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~401 ppi density) 5.5 inches, 83.4 cm2.

So personal preference and budget are your main deciders and how updated you want it to be I mean there well always be unofficial custom roms and community updates but if you are asking here I would assume you are not interested in that or don't know much about it.

    • Intel chip in ASUS is not compatible with some of the Google play store apps unlike Moto G5S plus

      • Yes this is a drawback but great price for a backup phone. I wish was this price half year ago or so

  • +2

dual sim? "SIM2 (2G) does not work in Australia"
Location NSW, but "From oversea by express if stock shortage in AU". What are the chances? :-)

Intel Atom Z3580 (not ARM), so how is battery life?

    • Battery life sucks

      • It was about a day with standard usage. The camera sucks though

        • Intel ARM chips were never optimised so with heavy usage I was out about halfway thru the day. Camera sucks heavily I agree.

        • @adrianhughes1998: camera is great especially in low light, there are forums about ZE551ML photography. But yes battery life sucks, but easily fixed with a 30Ah powerbank

    • I've bought from these guys, their shipping from Taiwan was faster than auspost can get me anything here in tas… amazing customer service too, I was well surprised and happy to pay a bit more for my xiaomi A1 for their service speed… would recc.. I actually cancelled my order with HongKongGoldway who didnt ship for 13 days, these guys had it out immediately and I had it in 3 days, their support is super snappy, good english and very helpful….

  • Is 2nd sim 3g/4g if 1st sim Is using 4g already.

  • in the detail description it says storage capacity is 16GB. where does it says 64GB expect listing?

  • Good price thanks

  • +1

12 month local seller warranty, Dual SIM (4G + 2G) and 2G network is shutting down

  • Technically it's the only phone on the market that can "run" Windows 7 (and higher) properly albeit with a bit of a workaround. Probably good for those who still dreaming of the idea of a "Surface Phone" that won't happen..

    • Nice for masochists. But can it make phone calls while running Windows?

      • +1

Yeah.. I believe so considering it is really running within a VM so the "Host" is still Android with Calling. These days, just stick a NUC at home and use a RDP session to it will do pretty much the same thing with better performance. Or better still, use "Desktop as a service" from any of the cloud providers to do the same.

  • +1

Had once since new. Much nicer build quality than a Xiaomi, and still plenty fast.

Downsides are the idiotic button placement and no official updates, but would work well with Lineage OS

    • +1

Have one too and it’s an old phone. Only upside is NFC for android pay. It did receive official updates for over two years and an update to marshmallow. Lags now cos Asus launcher is pretty bloated

    • LineageOS worked worser off than stock in that it drained the battery much quicker.

  • I have this and it’s not a bad phone but now using less due to sim2 only 2g only..

  • +1

One thing I don't like about this phone is, it doesn't have band 7 which is used by Optus & Telstra. I'm not sure if it affects 4g reception in some areas.

    • I bought the Taiwan version which have band 7.

      • The one from op's link doesn't have band 7 according the description. Only LTE B28 / B5 / B8 / B4 / B3 / B2 / B1.

  • +1

Feeling pretty good knowing that I just sold my 2.5 year old Zenfone 2 for $130!

  • -1

2+ year old model phone, secondary camera is just 5MP which is outdated these days.

  • The one from op's link doesn't have band 7 according the description. Only LTE B28 / B5 / B8 / B4 / B3 / B2 / B1.

  • this phone was shit, I had it a few years ago, terrible build quality processor bogged down quickly, tons of bloatware and a shocking camera.

  • I have this phone and it's great for the price.

Agreed that tech is old, and battery is limited. But for this price, if you don't need a $600 phone, I'd buy again.

  • I had this twice. Dropped it and broke the screen each time. I was very happy with it. At that price, I'd be ecstatic

  • My wife got given a used one this week. Battery life is surprisingly long. Screen is nice looking too.

    X86 processor quite interesting

Quite a bit of bloatware on it

  • Tried Zenfone previously. Not too bad but Asus pre-installed too many own apps. Official update is rare and I have to turn to Xda ROM to keep android system up to date. Overall I will avoid it in the future but at this price no harm to get one for kids or elders.

  • When I apply the voucher in the checkout is says ‘looks like this code isn’t ready yet’. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong?

    • Was getting that too but then it worked for me later in the day, already dispatched and good responses from seller when i emailed them questions, so hoping all good when it arrives
