You Guys Make Me Bankrupt 😂😭

I spend around $4000 this Boxing Day and I only work casually.

Update: it is actually $5000. I forgot to include travel sale to Uluru.

Comments

  • you had $5000 working casual jobs mate .. when I worked casual all I had was enough for rent, food and the occasional beer..

    • You're assuming she spent money she earnt. It's quite possible it was all on credit!

      • One thing I dont have till date is a credit card… missing out on a lot of AMEX deals lol.

    • Not every casual worker lives on their own or rents. Maybe she lives with her family? Parents?

      • true that…. my experience was between having money one day and the very day having close to zero lol ..

are you sure you're not mistaking us for another site? there weren't even any bargains for those products.

    • +2

I thought that too - when did I see a "bargain" for the iPhone X? haha

    • +3

They probably had a hand written "sale" tag with a token discount.

    • +7

Think she is mistaking OzPoser to OzBargain

  • +12

OP, do you also enjoy smashed avocado on toast? ;)

    • +4

don't forget the deconstructed sandwich as well :)

  • +11

Is this site now called Ozbragging ?

  • +1

Why is everyone hammering this person?! Its not your money they spent, who gives a (profanity)?!

    • +12

She is blaming ozbargain for making her bankrupt, I think we can flame her??

      • -4

What about the old saying if you have nothing nice to say dont say anything at all?

        • +4

I think what some people are saying here could be seen as 'constructive feedback'

      • +1

I believe she said that in good humour to show appreciation towards ozb deals. however as mentioned above it doesn't seem she got her items from ozb at all?

So now this post doesn't make much sense and I reckon that's where the flame is coming from.

        • +4

See if she had said she blew $5000 on eneloops, MicroSD cards and Xiaomi bidets, then she'd garner much more sympathy, since those are actual deals on OzBargain (not sure about the bidet yet but I'm sure Xiaomi will get around to it)

        • @definitive:
Not sure if serious…. Did you miss the recent Xiaomi bidet deal?

P.S. True Ozbargainers use a bum gun. Because cheaper.

  • I bet the status looks good walking around with the new phone at your casual job.Smart Move and maybe a good catch for anybody but a OZBargainer

  • +5

The Boxing Day sales were crap even Black Friday I reckon was better deals

    • +1

Ah Black Friday. First time I truly experienced it this year. It seems like yesterday I was going to town on Puma and Under Armour clothes for 50% and 40% off respectively. Probably bought a bit too much but I will using them for sure and sports clothes make me happy. I will be better prepared for next year's black friday deals.

      • +1

        will using them for sure

Are you sure? It's been a month already! :)

  • +2

Another drone seduced by the corporate marketing machine. Open your eyes… or keep buying overpriced nonsense you don't need nor can't afford just to keep up with everyone else.

  • +4

    "Ozbargain .. not OzBraggin"

  • +2

    This season, I splurged on:

    • A Samsung Note8, Note4 and a Note3 and apocalpse-proof phone cases for all,
    • A Nokia 3310 (vodafone deal),
    • A Samsung Wireless charger,
    • A Zhiyun Q Gimbal,
    • A Gear S3 watch (pre-owned),
    • An Anker QC multiport charger and premium mUSB/C cables,
    • Three pairs of sneakers (Puma sale),
    • The Xiaomi 70 minutes DashCam,
    • Two YeeLights,
    • A VQ Hepburn Mk II radio,

…. and more bottles of whiskey than one can shake a stick at.

I could say, all the above were well contemplated purchase decisions; the only impulsive ones being the many cheap trinkets from the Chinese OnlineShop deals posted here in OzB.

And, I always… always… paid into my CC in advance before spending from it (thus zero added charges; yet free purchase/buyer protection against stuff breaking in six months).

So, will see the new year with zero debt, and a well satiated gadget yearning.

    • +1

      haha nice list mate enjoy!

      i was wondering

paid into my CC in advance before spending from it (thus zero added charges; yet free purchase/buyer protection against stuff breaking in six months).

why do this instead of making use of interest free days? ie. pay what's due on the due date instead of in advance. Either way you avoid interest charges and still get the protection and points - but this way you get to hang on to your cash a bit longer and only do one transfer to credit card each month.

      • +1

        Thanks R-Man

Why I pay my CC in advance instead of making use of interest free days?

Well… frankly, I don't trust myself fully, to be disciplined enough to not spend the money to repay credit. And I see little point in sitting on the monies to be paid back anyways…

I get your point; and I have used the interest free days in the past.
However, advance pay-up is guarantee no-debt; I kinda like that feeling.

You have a great NewYear 2018!

        • aw yeah the assurance does sound good. Thanks you too!

  • i have few observations to make…

the OP sounds like a humblebrag but eh… if she can service the debt then who cares

i have bought a fair bit as well… i'm discounting the sub $50 gearbest crap because they're just trinkets

but i got a Dell 11 for my kid's school year

i got a Chuwi backup tablet keyboard combo

plus a Le Eco S3 backup phone so just minor electronics to fill in

  • this boxing day

A useless ps vr that gives me a headache
A $2000 dell pc featured on ozb on the day my 10 year old pc died

    • Least your $2,000 pc ought last you another 10 years of basic use :) ie. 'Futureproofed'

  • Only purchase I made was the Logitech speakers from JB Hifi, where the form of payment was a $100 giftcard from the Telstra Google Pixel JB Hifi deal.

Never even set foot in a physical store. I feel the boxing day sale these days are more hype than actual good prices.

  • +3

    You did this to yourself.

  • I see many many meals of instant noodles in your future.. Better hit up the local Asian grocery and get a box of Mi Goreng.. the life sustaining meal of cash strapped students.. :)

    • i survived on that for the last few months to save for boxing day! Now time to return back to that diet.

    • Just add an egg and it's a complete meal

  • this is a hot discussion..

  • +1

THe macbook is worth like $800 in parts and iphone x is just rip off af

Could of saved 2000 and have the same items

  • +2

I didn't buy anything but went bin diving through a few skips. I ended up getting about $300.00 dollars worth of gourmet food, some nice clothes, two bundles of tea towels (slightly blemished but otherwise fine.) A smart phone (missing the plug in the wall charger. but the 12 volt car charger was still in the box) a 100 dollar Derwent art set (two coloured pencils missing) a couple of pairs of Crocs (size 7) (there were like 50 pairs in the bin) about twenty packets of self heating emergency rations (that was from a bin at the back of a survivalist/army disposal store) several re-useable food grade containers (complete with snap tight lids) about 25 metres of bubble wrap, 20 metres of unravelled paracord, several boxes of Christmas lights (not sure if they all work,) I haven't tested any of the yet. Two (split) 30kg bags of Black Hawk premium dog food (about 70% remaining) several bottles of argan oil shampoo and conditioner (some leaking or have cracked lids) a Ronson pressure cooker with a big scratch through its LCD display (otherwise works fine, already used it)20 pack of toilet rolls (three missing) a box full of cosmetics (all unopened) and a couple of slightly damaged (but still very nice) beach towels.

Why spend money when you can bin dive?????

    • +3

"Why spend money when you can bin dive???"

      Dignity?

    • Are you a hobo?

    • +2

U just described what’s waiting for me in hell.

  • Who eats two minute noodles, when you can get what you want out of the average supermarket or restaurant bin??? I fed my cats pressure cooked salmon for Christmas day. The Vietnamese restaurant opposite one of the woollies bins I dive through, threw out three (largish) (but still edible) salmons that they must have ordered but not sold in a meal. My cats loved it…..They also regularly through out steak and meat/marrow bones, which I collect and give to my two dogs…..As for me my favourite place is a local Chicken Chef that throws out all its uncooked roast chickens on Sunday arvo as they do not open again until the following Tuesday…. one for me, rest for my pets……..then its off to skip at the back of a German/Polish Bakery…..then to Woolies/ Foodland and finally to the skip at the back of..(deleted)…………gunshop and military Warcraft supplies….Been eating Israeli army, self heating meals for months now (the steamed rice with chicken, peas and carrots is very nice!!!) I also looking really fetching in camouflage wear (got everything from the wrap around netting, to the t-shirts and pants and hat and gloves)

    God I love to DIVE!!!!

    • so you that terrorist commonly known as Bin Bludgin? :)

    • Man. That’s crazy. I mean that’s ur thing and I’m that’s cool.

But I simply prefer the 120-140k my investment properties appreciate a year. Just a lot less smelly stinky sticky work.

Food for thought when ur making , what 20% max of that a year doing what u do ?

    • Those places should try to avoid wasting so much food - e.g. donate to OzHarvest. Good to see it's not going to waste.

A lot of time I see wasted things like the new towels (haven't looked in bins though), etc. and want to grab some myself, and even if I don't use them, to donate to Vinnies or to someone who needs them.

What time do you usually do your diving? I've heard of it before, but hey, won't discount doing it if I need to one day.

  • hey big spender…

  • I am sure you're much happier if you disclose how much you saved after spending $4,000 :D

  • +4

    Uluru Ayer's Rock.

Planning to get myself there before they have license to punish you for climbing Ayer's Rock or fence it off or whatever they plan to do to inflate their sense of self-importance.

  • +1

    This Boxing Day I bought … a panetonne :D

No … I even waited till a couple days later :D

    • Fruit free I hope

  • where is the +1 voting option

    millennial FTW rite?

  • +2

IMO a MacBook is a fair purchase if your work or hobby uses software that favours Mac OS. The iPhone X is truly a luxury buy though.

  • +1

    Lmao

  • Why didn't you tell me earlier that I had access to your money to spend? I could have had a fabulous Christmas :P

  • lol I wish there were bargains that I could spend on, this year's boxing day sales were so crap I didn't buy anything at all

ok I did brought some marked down ham from Coles today, does that count? :)

  • +1

Well its ur money and u splurged it. No worries. Enjoy your iphone and Mac.

  • I deliberately did not look at any sales for boxing day .
Learnt from past mistakes and decided couple of days before 'I've got all I want/need at the moment, I will not look at sales items'

  • Joke thread ?

    People take seriously

    People angry

    Rawr

  • I actually earned money thanks to Ozbargain this year.
That Android Pay deal was the greatest free cash ever!

  • Yeah a bit silly. I'm starting to get to bare basics. If you wanted a powerful computer those refurbished Dell's were really good value and then just buy a decent 700 buck laptop. Phone? Might as well cancel contracts and use that friends and family deal with Optus or telstra for 59 a month or just buy a xiaomi phone if you don't want to leave the contract. Then I just stick with all the tiny gearbest buys for a buck or two just to satisfy the stupid wanting to buy something feeling.

  • bought my missus a Bali flight for her birthday.
Jetstar advertised $200 but only charged me 155 so I shut up!

  • @op can please share details about the uluru deal? Am interested to know more :D

  • +1

Where did you get the travel sale to Uluru from ? And what did it consist of (flights, accommodation) ?

  • I have ran out of negs today reading this and another thread.
    Sheer stupidity

  • Bought a Mavic Pro ($1.5k), a full Sonos 5.1 set ($2.5k), a camera lens ($650), 4 pairs of shoes ($180), a pair of shorts ($35). Regretting it all now… should've just spent it on KFC Wicked Wings to make me happy.

  • Don't think of how much you spend, think of it in terms of how much you saved.
Ie. I will save hundreds of dollars in toilet paper in the next 5-10 years after buying my smart seat bidet so i think of it that way rather than saying i spent $400 on a toilet seat (when i alread have a dumb nonwater spraying one), i also saved a couple of hundred on the purchase price too.

    congrats on the savings friend.

  • my mistake

  • I like ur emojis ^_^

  • You should purchase property can't fail

  • +1

    I bought nothing.

  • Bankrupt!!!!…I did spend quite a bit this year but not quite enough to make me bankrupt.

This year….Fetch Mighty and Mini (20% Ebay discount code, I did "need" a new PVR as the Electronic Programme Guide no longer worked reliably and picture quality was not HD), Toaster and Kettle (Myer stacked discount codes, the old kettle was leaking so this had to be replaced), 42" HDTV (to replace a 21" CRT which didn't "need" replacing but it had to be replaced to work with the Fetch and I got sick of watching everything in letterbox format) (a Kogan discount), a Telstra 4G mobile Wingle and a 4GX mobile broadband hotspot (both from Telstra with cashback), several Amex offers, far too many free pizza codes from Microsoft and Dominos, a Rebel sport offer and plenty of Flybuys and Woolworths Rewards offers.

Also this year had to switch to the NBN so that required me to spend money on a new router.

    I think that's about it…

For those of you wanting to know when I bin dive, its usually at night and on the weekend but that being said and done it really depends on the opening and closing times of the shops/supermarkets I visit. I try wherever possible to wait until all the staff are gone (or at least most have) usually there is a cleaner/s inside at the time but they have never bothered me up until now. There are a number of videos on UTUBE about bin diving, if anyone is interested. Seriously, it is not as bad as it sounds. (You do however need to use some common sense.) There most certainly are items that are in a bin, for very obvious reasons. The vast majority of meat/dairy products I collect goes towards feeding my pets (I have 12 rescue cats and two rescue dogs) On top of that I always leave some meat and milk out for the stray cats that always seem to be around these bins. Just finally, someone commented on the dignity issue. I can tell you (as a qualified Social worker) that there are a lot more undignified ways of obtaining food, that bin diving (some people refer to it as FREEGANISM or REDUCTIVISM) Having to survive on a benefit that is (up to 80% below) national poverty line indexes, I believe, destroys any dignity you have, far quicker that going through some bins/waste skips, twice a week. In fact, the clients I deal with who do B.D. are by far better off (economically and nutritionally) than the ones who sit back and do nothing, but expect hand out are hand out after handout and couldnt help themselves if you gave them a step by step instruction manual. I believe that I am making my own contribution towards trying to solve the huge waste problem that is endemic in most parts of the developed world. Finally, I dont just go through (food waste) bins. I also do hard refuse runs (or hits as I like to call it) and some of the stuff I have procured (from bins and left on the side of the road) have been really awesome. For example, I found a wind up gramophone, (winder spring broken but I am looking for somewhere to repair it) several vintage chrome hubcaps (Dodge, Desoto, Chevy and Ford) a trunk full of vintage clothes (possibly thirties and forties era) a suitcase full of retro cookbooks (1930s through to early 60s) a complete set of retro aluminium kitchen canister's (1950s maybe?) a complete Sunbeam mixmaster (1956 model) in box with all attachments. An old pram (circ 1940s) an old brass kitchen clock (plug into light socket, havent used yet cause not sure how safe it is?) a very old kero/paraffin heather (dont use just display) an old (very heavy) Captains chair (type of desk chair) (used in offices and government buildings in the 20s and 30s (thrown out on sidewalk after our 1888 town institute was gutted of all original furniture/fittings, and the list goes on and on and on……

Maybe its just junk to you, but me I love it and believe very strongly in recycling and reusing. Finally to the person who just sits back and watches their investment portfolio grow, (that's great Daddy warbucks) but isn't going to be much comfort to you, in a SHTF situation. As a planet we are already at maximum capacity and using resources (water, fuel, land etc) at far greater levels than can be sustained. All we need is a country like North Korea (using this as an example) to explode a nuclear device high above Australia which would in turn create a series of EMP (electro magnetic pulses) which emit high frequency pulses which destroy all electronic equipment (it essentially fries the equipment so it will never work again) and whallah, we are back to the 19th century! (permanently or at least for a very long time) Then let's talk about how your investment account is helping you? Those who will survive will be those who can make good with what they can recycle and grow. Money will be useless (unless you want to start a fire with it and or use it as insulation against the cold…….?? I suggest you read William Fortschens book, One second after. It's frightening reading and what is the scariest thing, is that it's far from science fiction……..

Have a great and safe new year.
Claire the bin diving Queen of the Outer North!

Work harder and get full time job to get higher pay. Then continue spending, even more:) to make life happier. You dont bring money to the grave.

A holiday has actually saved my wallet. First time I've had to sit down and check ozbargain. There are boxing day sales here in Singapore, but the prices are much more than the ozbargain Aussie sale prices. So will just be enjoying extremely good cheap street food! (unlike our "street" food places in Melbourne, charging mid to high range restaurant prices)

    • Same experience albeit in a different part of Asia.
