I didn't realise Maccas accepted Good Guys vouchers?

  • If it was normal work day it might slip through the system, I once wanted to cancel an order and it took 2 day to respond and by that time it had shipped and I was told I could return it for refund less postage ……. with new year day holiday, it does give them a chance to identify these orders before they shipped,

surprised nothing about while stocks last, etc on their site, so probably another work experience kid doing their ecommerce coding for them.

so when does amazon alexia become the flavour of the month ?

  • Manage to grab 2 for $0 + $8 delivery.. hope this works!

  • +3

I'm wondering how many people have bought?

    • +1

too many - someone's gonna have a fun time cancelling thousands of orders tomorrow :D

      • Hopefully someone being paid double time for the effort too.

    lol hehehehehee

  • bit disappointed this couldn't be paired with a free shipping promo ;)

now we play the waiting game…

  • sweet bought 3 so they can speak to each other - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GqWGDDXaOE

  • At first I thought, wow, it's a lot like that time they gave the codes out via SMS and you were meant to but didn't have to have a minimum spend and they would give two to every prepaid you signed up - that was sweet - maybe this time will be like that! In my mind the Good Guys are marketing themselves as the laughable drunk uncle who accidentally gives you a fifty instead of a five every once in a while. But the sheer scale of this exploit. It is NYE for chrissakes. Middle of the night and approaching 500 positive votes?! People saying they got 6?! Yeah, unless there is more to this whole google home mini thing than we know… and they are actually managing to create positive value to some corporate scheme such that for every additional one placed in a home they get more value than the units cost. The way they are handing them out like skittles as bonus with purchase made me wonder, and if they honour this, I will put on my shiny foil hat and say "confirmed".

  • +1

Just here for the show, I didn't even bother ordering any. I've done this dance way too much, so have we all, and we all know how this is going to end.

I highly doubt they are going to honor 8000+ Google's home minis for ~4 dollars each delivered.

Good on you OP for posting it, however glitches like this are probably best kept secret, at least you would have scored.

Sit back, relax and watch the fireworks take off soon.

    • +4

Sit back, relax and watch the fireworks take off soon.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you missed the NYE fireworks by about 5hrs!

      • +3

Nah I saw them, I was taking about the fireworks that are going to happen when all the orders are cancelled one by one in the coming hours.

  • No possible way they will honour it given the number of orders.
But nothing hurts from trying :P

btw, you don't need to add anything else in the order.
Just add 2 google home minis and proceed to checkout.

  • +1

Bought 2, thanks. Waiting for cancellation :)

  • Order Summary:

Someone really messed it up :P

  • I just ordered one and put it as a delivery let's see what will they do.

edit: found this inside their terms

    • It's ok. No one expected they to honour it but a $10 voucher :P

      • hahhaah at least something to put a smile on our face in 2018

  • Merged from Google Home Mini - 3 Chalk + 3 Charcoal for $86 Delivered at The Good Guys Online

While looking at this popular deal, I further discovered that if you try adding both the colours i.e. Chalk and Charcoal you can order 6 of them for a combined delivery of just $8. While there are high chances of this deal not getting honoured, but while you are at the game of ordering 3 of them, might as well order 6 and make the most out of this opportunity. Good luck and Happy 2018 everyone. Fingers crossed. Cheers!

    • +7

this is getting out of hands what's going on with this Google home mini deals XD

      • +16

Google is getting their ears in every home, to mine more and more data from literally everyone :p

Tinfoil hats aside.. I'm still skeptical about how useful these things really are. Do they provide any more benefit than just asking my phone "ok google…"?

        • -1

no, it's for people who aren't android users , or want one in their homes incase phone isn't handy when at home.

the market is heading more towards voice recognition and AI, to refine voice recognition you need data and this is another method of capturing more of it if people aren't using the phone for voice recognition.

          • +8

@garage sale: Google: We really value your privacy

            Twitter: We’d never collect anything

Apple: We securely encrypt everything on-device.

Facebook: Literally gives you an ad for something you dreamt about

          • +2

@garage sale: Lol .. you need to check out Black Mirror's "White Christmas" episode .. well it was actually their Christmas special .

            (once you've seen it)
            Now THAT's the future.

        • +1

We find ours pretty useful as you can hook them up to control your chromecast or if you have a harmony hub it can control that too (and a bunch of other smart home things). So the kids can watch something on Netflix autonomously which is great. Also for its size the speaker is surprisingly not bad and can go really loud so we like it for music. Or you can cast a podcast to it.

        • +2

They provide the benefit of a "spouse" ..

How many times has your partner, in another room, shouted … "Honey? What's the weather today?" And you'd have to shout back .. (after looking it up at your device) .. it's <insert number here>.

Well, now replace that for single folks (or lazy you) with "Hey Google." (Google is in the middle of implenting Hey Google, to follow what Amazon does with Alexa).

If you have kids, I have been told (Alexa) helps out by leaps and bounds for 4+ year olds. (I don't have either so I can't comment.)

    • lol

    • +2

I was waiting for full size google home deals as i had a gut feeling that there will be very good google home deals soon after these mini deals.. but this is too good not to buy. Looks like a valid deal not price error. Thanks!

    • +3

Well i just put in one of each colour which made them free, plus $8 shipping. Sites getting hammered it seems lol

    • Or you could just do separate orders and get 6 for 24$ shipping.

Doubt they honour any of these

      • -1

        Why would you do that?

    • -3

If there was any chance at all of the 3 for $78 deal being honoured, it is now gone thanks to exploits like this one (and the two for $8 delivered).

      • No

        • no, would be funny if they people the $2 sims, charged postage and said sorry no google homes left …….

they don't refund postage if you return items , tried it with a cancelled google home mini order as price dropped below $55, no refund on postage.

          • @garage sale: Refund on postage? What are you talking about? I’m not talking about postage.

          • @garage sale: I tried the 2$ sim delivered last night, but they said sim can't be delivered and had to be c&c

            Not sure why…

    • +1

      Wow
      So getting cancelled lol

    • +1

      I read this as;

Just to take it from a 1 in 10,000 chance that the good guys would honour this to a 1 in a million, try buying 6 rather than 3….

Seriously guys/girls if this gets honoured then google minis are officially worthless with google giving them away for free for your data there is no way that the good guys are taking this hit.

      • +4

Google just want it in your houses.

      • +3

        They possibly are ..

Google (was) giving these away for free for about a month in NYC and LA. They're trying to muscle in on Amazon's Echo who has a wide following. (possibly one of the reasons why Google removed their YouTube service on Amazon devices).

People would queued up at pop-up locations with vending machine that randomly dispersing either a Google Mini or donuts.

        https://www.popsugar.com/news/Google-Home-Mini-Doughnut-Shop…

        • +1

It would be interesting if the numbers are ever specified, how many google homes are sold and revenue google gains vs revenue from data sharing and selling.

I feel like an old man saying ‘how do they ship this from overseas for $1.20 and make a profit’, but google are seriously capitalising on the value of captured data while masquerading as a tech company.

          • +1

@rekabkram: I'm too paranoid about these devices in the home but

In the US .. Alexa (Amazon's version of Siri) seriosly kicks butt. Of 20 friends I regularly talk to .. 15 of them have Echo devices in their home.

Google is late (in the US) on this market and Amazon capialized on it.

If I remember correctly, in addition to telling you info .. you can easily program a slew of ITTT (if this then that) commands and have it control (nearly) everything from temperature, lights, TV programs/vidoes via the Amazon FireStick .. And now with the recent update, your phone calls. Some of the guys that work at home would basically use Alexa to call into their work and handle a conference call via the Amazon Echo Dot (I think this is their latest device) ..

I started seeing this 2+ years ago in the US. Went back last year for Thanksgiving and the Echo devices were THE sale items to get during Black Friday sales.

I'm just finding it a bit weird that it's only NOW that Australia is getting these type of devices. Maybe google is being smart now that Amazon is available in Australia.

BTW: i don't know how the laws go here but Alexa is on CONSTANT listening and record mode in order to function. And these audio recordings are stored on Amazon servers. I remember reading a few articles where federal authorities have subpoenaed Amazon for the recordings for cases where they noticed the "suspect" had an Amazon Echo device in the home. I didn't read further than that and if they gained access to the recordings .. but just the thought of them holding a recording of anything and everything their mic pics up irks me. I'm assuming google does the same?

Don't know how Australian laws apply to things like that.

          • +1

@rekabkram: @lamb: yes agree that it is scary that google home saves your voice commands, phone collects your finger print, and webcam cam looks at you.

          • +3

@rekabkram: @lamb: I have 3 Amazon Echos (the first for almost 2 years) and while they are always listening for the trigger word they only record into a small temporary buffer (a few seconds) until they hear the trigger word - it's only the commands immediately after hearing the trigger word that is sent to Amazon and retained.

They do not record everything that is heard 24x7 and send to Amazon - that would generate constant or regular traffic. According to my router logs/graphs my Echos send less than 1mb/day generally.

You are correct in some serious cases Amazon has provided authorities with command recordings in case they contained useful info.

          • @rekabkram: @systmworks:
Thank you .. ooc: are you using these in Australia? I know this is OZbargains but with the internet, I don't want to ASSume. heh heh ..

          • +1

            @rekabkram: @lamb: yup Gold Coast

          • @rekabkram: @systmworks: although you are right, be aware that they record false positives. So it will have a lot recording of you just talking where it thought you said a trigger. So expect that it's almost triple the amount you expect it hears.

          • @rekabkram: @OnlinePred: we notice the odd false positive - you hear the beep and see the top ring light up - maybe once or twice a week.

          • @rekabkram: @systmworks: yes, and sometimes it doesn't beep. You see anything that is even close gets recorded Along with a bit afterwards.

    • -2

Let be honest they're practically worthless anyway, I feel bad for people that bought them as Christmas presents…they've been sold below 15USD for a while now and even with the conversion rate they shouldn't be worth anywhere near 37 AUD ea.

Just my honest opinion and I know people don't like hearing they've wasted their hard earned dosh but truth be told most people have more money than sense.

Put myself down for 6 about an hour after I found out about the deal, either way I couldn't careless.

    • Out of curiosity .. with all this hype on the Google Mini,

has anyone heard of the Amazon Echo devices (in Australia).

      • +1

Can anyone readily access Echo in Australia like they can Google Home?

When Amazon eventually decide to offer Echo in Australia, then perhaps it’ll be a different story but every day deals like this are offered, they are losing market and mind share.

        • That's what I am wondering. Is the service "locked" somehow to specific countries. Is THAT why google is setting up shop here now because Amazon didn't get the "rights" yet.

Or is Australian laws/patents preventing it somehow.

          • +1

@lamb: no its purely that amazon have not decided to support australia yet, google have.

        • +2

Ive had Amazon Echos for 2 years. Deals are listed here regularly from B&H Video who ship to Oz.

A 30 second web browser hack (using built in Dev Tools) is required to set Australian address/location - simples.

Amazon should have these for sale in Australia in the next ~2 months. They are adding new countries all the time.

Pandora still works on Amazon Echo devices - it's what I use it for the most (and weather and jokes and controlling my LIFX lights in the lounge/bedroom).
I have an Amazon Dot in the car specifically for streaming Pandora via car stereo.

          • @systmworks: Lol .. I was actually thinking of having it for simple things (at first) ..

Or at the moment to replace the "What's the temperature today?" from the shower.

But the ability to voice dials, control things via ITTT (in the future), get train/road conditions audibly while hands are tied are tempting as well. But at the moment, I'm only looking for it as a bathroom use (still a little paranoid about the whole listening thing, at least in the bathroom, it's somewhat "limited") .. lol

I don't know if I intend to use YouTube much since I Plex everything I want to see.

      • +1

I know somebody who has a dot imported from THE US…its pretty limited atm but that's expected until they actually release it legitimately in Australia.

        • Wow .. thanks, exactly the info I was looking for.

Have they attempted to VPN (back) to the US and see if it allows for "more" functionality?

Kinda like setting up a dual zone Wifi at home where one is VPN'ed (to the US in this case) and the main line is untouched. (It would be a little slow on the VPN'ed line.)

I'm debating on having my friends visiting from the US to bring me back a Echo Dot or not (just for fun).

          • +1

@lamb: Umm not sure.. I'm back at work on Wednesday so I'll ask him. I YouTubed Dot VS Mini a while back and came to the conclusion both are good for different reasons. I think eventually the Dot will be amazing here but I really doubt there will be a full roll out from the start… Google home has its flaws but I believe it's mainly software, that can be updated over the air so no biggie. Google has been in Australia longer than Amazon whether that will eventually play a role in 2018.

That was such a fence answer lol, sorry.

          • @lamb: @andrgram:
No worries .. SystemWorks seems gave me enough first hand experience that I can google the rest ..

I'm on the fence about getting one of these devices but am interested in "playing" with one (for a bargain price of course) .. lol

If anyone in Sydney who gets 6 and doesn't need all of them, I'd be happy to buy one off your hands <insert bargain price here>. =D

          • @lamb: @lamb: lol ye well I was always going to get the Google home because I have chromecasts, subscribed to Google Music, plus Samsung devices at home. Was unsure about Echo but Woolies gave me that free Home Mini promo from earlier in the year,so I gave it a go and ye really impressed…tbh it's all a little bit of fun. I'm almost positive you wouldn't regret either purchase.

          • @lamb: @andrgram:
Lol .. I'm an iOS shop at home becuse I have too much vested into Apple Store apps. (No intention of getting the Apple Speaker thing.)

Chromecast, are you using the old version or the new one with the ethernet dongle? I gave up on the old Chrome"Stick" and moved on to a Roku one cause it chokes on 720 vids I streamed from a plex box. (In retrospect wish I got the Amazon FireStick instead and just hacked it instead of the Roku now that they are cracking down on Kodi channels, they were the same price during US Black Friday 2016.)

with the info from this discussion, I'll end up getting my hands on either one (or both) to give a try.

    • At this point, Google may as well give them away. Looks like they are simply buying their market share with giveaway devices

    • Hmm

    • -1

All these skeptics really need to shut up shop.. I'm tired of reading the same "google wants to infiltrate your home and personal information" on literally every home-related post… I'm sure the same people would have a smartphone, a tablet and a laptop or desktop… All of which save Cookies and Cache everything you look up. Phones tracking your location to learn your schedule and adjust reminders based on time of day and day of week and whatever else… Live with the times people.

      • +3

It's perfectly reasonable to be sceptical of Google, a company that exists to sell your information.

        • All companies sell your information… You get the disclaimer at the beginning as a check box. Google has done what Google does since its conception… I don't see why it'd any different now… Do you use Siri/Alexa/Google Assistant/Bixby? I don't believe Google Home is any different to those

          • -2

@ExtraSalt: They're the best collectors of information in the business.

I see an address and I start typing it into Google maps (just the street number), and it autocompletes the address I was about to type. How the F did it know where I was going to go just from the street number?

          • @ExtraSalt: I don't use those, no, but the entire concept of phone AI is that it's a feature you can turn on or off. This device's entire purpose is to be an always on dumb AI, and along the way it will collect your data. So it's a little different. Phones can also make phone calls and browse the web. This device has one purpose.

          • @ExtraSalt: @LuthLexor: ye I get your point but the on/off feature in this case is buy/pass. Technically You can make calls and browse the web on the. Mini as well

      • +2

Google, Amazon, Apple, Samsung etc are not altruistic companies only wanting to make your life better. We all are aware that getting data mined including through the OzBargain loved Cash Rewards, this device just seems to be an additional tracker that most people seriously don't need as they have smart phones in arms reach at most times.

        • +2

Yep, the question isn't do google want to infiltrate your home, of course they do, the question is; what's your privacy worth to you? It seems it goes pretty cheap these days which IMHO is bit foolish.
