Daniel Wellington are overpriced basic quartz fashion watches.

For this kind of money or less you can buy something that you can wear swimming from a reputable watch making brand like Seiko (Orient) Citizen or Casio.

    For example -
Citizen Eco-Drive Black / Green / Beige $119.00 Shipped @ Starbuy + More, New Year Sale

    • No matter it is basic or premium, I still like the design. : )

      • +5

That's great, just don't spend hundreds of dollars on a watch that cost around $10.00 to make, spend $10.00 as others have mentioned below.

      • +3

Just search for Bauhaus style watches you may be surprised what else you might like :)

I think it is summed up quite well in this YouTube video: http://youtu.be/Gb4_xxfoUZE

I have massive respect for TGV, he really knows his watches.

  • +10

You can buy fake DW which are just as sh*t as the "real" deal, but for only $5. Probably made in the same factory. Quartz fashion watches are so awful.

    • +3

agreed, got one on aliexpress for $12?. looks and works exactly the same as $300 "genuine" ones

    • +10

I’m a big fan of value and especially watchnerd, but the only people you’re impressing with a Seiko are other watch nerds. Please tell me how a mans supposed to get the coochie wet with a Casio ?? I ain’t trying to tell a girl on a date what a sensible spender I am.. cmon guys.

You should always buy what you like, but it's not the only option to either buy a fashion brand or spend thousands on a Rolex.
There are quality watches in all price brackets & DW isn't one of them.

HOW TO: Start your own ‘minimalist’ watch brand

You can buy cheap watches that will last years as well. You just have to know where to look.

    • +7

How can the price be great when you get the same level quality from a $10 aliexpress DW replica.

MK is just a rebranded Fossil watch - this is why they get equal negative treatment by watch enthusiasts.

I'm not saying that the Rolex price is justified, despite their amazing manufacturing process which you could simply Google, most of its high cost is attributed to the brand name. And no, you're not going to get the same quality from a $1000 Sinn or B&R etc. though you might get the same quality from an Omega which is 30-40% cheaper.

A watch is just jewellery in today's age, you don't need one, but I like wearing wrist watches and appreciate the worksmanship that goes into them.

If you choose to not purchase a watch due to a lower financial status and/or if you just have no interest in watches - that's perfectly fine.

Though if you can't appreciate luxuries in life, that's just pure ignorance. You could apply the same argument to any luxury - Why spend $50+ on high quality steak if it's just food and you're going to poop it out the next day? Why not just eat a cheap sandwich?

      • And no, you're not going to get the same quality from a $1000 Sinn or B&R

I don't understand this bit. Please explain . Same quality as what ? :-)

I'm so tempted to get a Sinn 104!

        • I think he's saying the quality of Sinn and B&R is not comparable to Rolex. The extra $$$ makes a big difference.

        • He's saying the Sinn and B&R are not the same quality as the Rollie.

Sinn 104, YES! If only a Sinn U1 would fit my wrist.

        • That's in reference to the Rolex as the she mentioned "Chanel or Rolex for a piece of metal".

Sinn make great watches, but comparing a Sinn U1 diver to a Rolex Submariner, you will be able to define that value yourself if you have them in your hands.

The steel frame and bracelet/buckle feel a tad more solid on the Rolex. The Bezel feels smoother to turn and each click is distinct. The dial contains markers that are finished with better materials e.g. white gold. The movement may be more complex or use higher quality components - meets COSC certifications etc.

And then comparing an Omega Seamaster PO, if you have them to compare on hand, they feel quite similar and not just in design. It also comes in just as nice boxes/packaging, customer service and brand history can also be comparable.

Rolex probably mass produce one of the highest quality watches on the market, at a high rate with the most effective and efficient manufacturing process. Though it is at most mid-tier with the likes of Patek, Vacheron, Audemars, AL&S around with far more prestige and complex movements and are heavily hand crafted.

        • @matte1: I agree with everything you wrote. But I'm surely not comparing a Sinn 104 or U1 to a Sub. I just real admire the design aspects of both.

    • +3

OK, there's the problem. You are comparing a DW with an MK. MK are turd watches, so you are comparing a DW to a turd - which is basically a fair comparison. I can tell you have never owned a luxury watch, which is fine, but if you do get an opportunity to hold, wear or read about a Rollie you might understand.

You don't even have to drop a $1000 to get an amazing watch. $600 will get you a very nice desirable piece that will last a very long time. DW and other fashion watches are really shunned by 99% of watch nerds because they are crap quality, have crap workmanship and they have no brand heritage - except for Facebook and Insta.

If you want a decent fashion watch that is a quartz (battery - always cheaper) buy a Swiss made Mondaine for ~$100 They have a good reputation on WatchUSeek, for what they are. They also make more up-market autos if that's your interest.

    • +1

wenger and victorinox and swatch are also about the cheapest for real Swiss watches

also way cheaper than DW Fossil MVMT and that nonsense.

      • Yep, but Victorinox is probably a bit more a different style and better quality. Wenger is cheap too - not very 'fashionable' though IMO. I reckon the Mondaine is right in fashion watch territory. I would also consider some Orients or a Visodate..

        • +1

yeah i'm probably going to buy a Mondaine (thanks to you!)

they are expensive here, like $300 from retailer but for under $100 shipped? I'm not going to quibble.

        • +2

@tonyjzx: It looks like P5OZZIE is working again, so don't forget to use it if buying on eBay.

    • +2

Tsk, Tsk! Don't encourage them man! Hehe.

Personally I love the brand and think the price is great …

      • +3

Wait until you see the strap.

  • +2

The website carefully conceals the fact all their watches - even at $329 - feature a mineral crystal - not sapphire crystal - window. Amazon 360˚ videos confirm that.

    • +3

The next person that posts a DW should be thrown in the OZB Brig.

    • +3

That is highly offensive when you can get a much higher quality watch like the Orient Bambino automatic for less than half that price with the code P5OZZIE -

      Orient 2nd Gen Bambino (black) US$122.01 - $6.10 = $115.91 shipped (~AU$147.50)
      Orient 2nd Gen Bambino (grey) US$122.01 - $6.10 = $115.91 shipped (~AU$147.50)
      Orient 2nd Gen Bambino (blue) $158.01 - $7.90 = $150.11 shipped

What do you think of the one in my photo?

        • +2

@sky blu: took me a while to work out which photo. Love it! I have one too :)

        • +2

@giovannip: ^^ it isn't cream dial though. Gotta fall in love with the blue hands!

        • +2

@sky blu: oh yeah it's white. I looked at it in the sun and thought it was cream. Still looks awesome.
