Ever since picking up some Google Home Mini's and the Xiaomi Robocop Vacuum, I've started delving into home automation and realised that a Raspberry Pi 3 is great for running HomeAssistant so I can do stuff like controlling the vacuum with Google Home so I've asked the LITB rep to see if they can provide a deal on the Raspberry Pi 3 and they did!

Apply the coupon MODELB at checkout to get US$20 off which brings the final price to US$27.50 (I got charged $35.02 on my Coles Mastercard). Just make sure you select Free Shipping to get this price.

This particular Raspberry Pi 3 is the UK VERSION A53 Quad-Core Board w/ 1GB RAM.

According to the rep, this deal will run for 5 days with an allocated 100 units of discounted stock per day in case some of you miss this deal on the first day (eg. MODELB will work 100 times today, tomorrow, Thursday etc). 1 unit per LITB account.

The LITB rep also told me they have a flash sale on the following items which may be of interest as a companion product for the Raspberry Pi 3:
DIY 16 in 1 Sensor Module Kit for US$6.99
Aluminum Alloy Metal Case With Fan for US$6.99

Don't forget to click through Cash Rewards for an extra 5% back. Enjoy!

EDIT: I'll update the Coupon code and "Unexpire" the deal when the rep lets me know the new code each day. I'll also add the new coupon code in the Comments section so that you'll get a notification if you're Subscribed to this post.

UPDATE 14/1/18 10:31PM:
The new code for today (14 January 2018) is RASPBERRYPIMODELB3

        • @yamumma: That's great. I was just saying maybe the delayed shipping was because it was the busiest time of the year for the postal service.

  • Op, in what way voice command make mi vac more powerful?

Granted it's cool to be able to release the hound but mi vac can be scheduled and operate as per schedule so in theory, the hound is released on daily basis on particular time frame of the day.

    • We have a husky and I've scheduled a clean every day at 9:30am so the hound cleans up most of his fur every morning. I guess the hound can be released again at night say after we have guests with kids over who make a mess and drop crumbs etc…at least the hound will get to the crumbs before the husky does :)

      • +1

Yes but your post about home automation particularly pairing GH with Mi Vac via Raspberry pi, I meant how is that making the mi Vac more powerful than just its normal scheduling? Or have I misunderstood your whole post about Raspberry Pi and Google Home and Mi Vac being voice commanded?

        • I've got lights and mi vac and sensors and would like to get Google home and Xiaomi gateway to speak to each other and home assistant and a pi would do this

        • @j450n74y: ok thanks

  • Are the 16 in 1 sensor module kit any good? Alternatives?

    • I think some of the sensors are pretty pointless. Eg one of them literally gives the Raspi a CR2032 battery so it can keep the date without power and getting the date off the network.

      • Thanks

        Did a bit of search for those interseted on the description of each sensor;
        https://www.electronicgeek.ca/products/raspberry-pi-16-senso…

        • didn't answer what I wanted to know…

          "14. 315M super regenerative module

          1. Tilt sensor module

Sensor can sense changes in the angle of the object

            Working voltage 3.3V-5V"

Some are clear, some are pretty vague hey?

        • @Robc: "changes in the angle "

At the simplest iteration, a door sensor or checking whether something has been picked up. As a plaything, a nice involved silly way to build a set of scales…

        • @terrys:

Sorry formatting screwed me up. Yeah I get that one, just nothing for super regenerative module… Wtf?

        • @Robc: Simples. It's a roll your own wireless remote control for when you have a spare 5 minutes [or years] to while away…

          https://robokits.co.in/wireless-solutions/simple-rf-module/r…

      • "keep the date without power and getting the date off the network."

Not pointless if you want a self-contained project with no public connection.
e.g: I have a need to set up an unattended camera to monitor a community garden that is suffered a fair bit of petty theft amounting to real money lost over some weeks. ~$50 will get time lapse shots with time and date stamps without the need to run a network cable to an outside area, a wi-fi booster and compatible USB dongle or a data plan and hotspot from a phone…

        • +1

I was going to write just this, a clock and a hardware watchdog were practically a given in lots of mostly/totally disconnected projects that are supposed to just do their thing without being watched.

Searched for "Noir" as in the Noir camera for Rpi…first result: https://www.lightinthebox.com/women-s-sexy-pearl-panties-wai…

I bought a similar deal from light in the box last year, and never would again.

I payed extra for shipping insurance. After taking over a month to arrive, it arrived with basically no protection, it was shipped in a thin postage bag. It had been crushed, with the pins from the board showing through the box the pi comes in, and all mashed out of place.

I supplied photos to litb, showing it was useless. They would not send a replacement or refund unless I downloaded and completed a return form (after going through the full painful return process on their website), posted the broken pi back, and then once they'd received it, waited 5 days for them to assess.

Ridiculous service, definitely not worth the hassle.

    • I was going to write about the same thing. It's not just litb, I have bought a couple of Pi's from cheap chinese stores and each one has been squashed, but fortunately not damaged. Just chucking the oem thin cardboard box into a thin plastic envelope is not good enough for international shipping. Even a few turns of the foam padding would do the trick. I got one via the Arrow deal with free DHL express shipping for $A4 more than this back in November. Properly packaged and arrived in 3 days.

    • you couldn't do a card chargeback?

  • when is the new version of rasp pi coming out?

      • wow, why so long?
It can't be that hard to upgrade the parts?

Phones gets new models every year/6 months..

the RPI3 model B been around for a while now..

Does the rpi4 do hevc better etc?

        • Can't say. Something to do with hitting a wall using 40nm tech and trying top keep the price down. Just a 3B and have a play. :)

    • they can't do anything currently because they can't fit any more on the SoC waiting new ones to be developed

      • amazing that phones get upgraded chips every year/ 6 months

but the rpi3 takes 3 years before next upgrade

  • What version? Says US in the title and UK in the description.

Scratch that, US refers to the price…

        • If PM's are being sent, count me in.
Otherwise, I shall just keep checking.

      • Can I also be added to the list if not too inconvenient, been checking every 15-20 minutes

      • New code? :'(

      • PM me the code if it isn't going to be made public.

      • +1 pm please, I've been wearing out my refresh button.

      • +1 PM for me too please :)

Received a nice spike to my blog, and am surprised it's from OzBargain. :D Everything I buy these days come from OzBargain deals. So here's a big thank you to OzBargain and the community. And please more smart gadget deals.

For folks who are thinking of or on the sidelines of using Pi for HASS. In the future I'd do a quick write up on how to install & run Home Assistant in RP (I only have 1/2 but hopefully the same HOWTO will work on 3). Agreed using RP to run Home Assistant is the ideal way for most folks.

Very quickly - difference between XiaoMi home vs Home assistant
    * Bypass cloud in some cases (e.g. using a wireless switch to turn on Yeelight can be done all from the LAN). This means you can firewall off traffic to the XiaoMi servers if you like. I have never bothered to do this, as don't really know if the Vacuum algorithm will function properly with that cut off.
    * More control (e.g. possible to write a script, and then use IFTTT and say something like 'vacuum the guest room'. The script will cotain the commands to navigate to the room from the base, and then perform a spot clean).
    * Better integration with more devices outside what Mi Home is offering now (e.g. presense detection via DD-WRT). Examples include, if you are using the wireless smart switch as a door bell, it will ring when somebody is in the house, but will do something else if nobody is in the house. And then there is also the ability to trigger based on MQTT.
    * Better integration means it'd better fit into your routine. e.g. I like to walk around the house first to make sure there are no hazards before starting the vac. So for me I find it more comfortable to walk around and make sure there are no hazards on the floor, and then shout 'release the hounds'.

I'm still very new to HASS though, so everything is still pretty crude & primitive. But it'd get there eventually.

There're still 3 XiaoMi products yet to arrive (Air Purifier, IR control and smart power strip). Again all OzBargain deals LOL. Once they're here I'd write up on how to connect them to Home Assistant.

    • Admittedly, I do have a Google Home Mini, but I was wanting to do a custom made design assistant, or making a retroPi unit.

      • Buy more Pis? :D But yeah. for HASS it's ideal to have a Pi running 24/7.

For me so far I find better practical use cases with the XiaoMi gateway (and zigbee devices).

Google Home I guess is more suited for people who like the concept of the Ultrahouse (From the Simpsons). i.e. talk to your house, and have it talk back to you. e.g. Once you have presense set up, you can set up HASS to say weird things like 'Welcome back' when you're home.

Better yet, if you have a home intruder, you can set it up to say something like 'Silent alarm activated' and flash all the colour yeelights red/blue. :D

        • You can have Google home running on the pi now too. Just add a usb mic and a 3.5mm/hdmi connected speaker.

I've bought Google home mini(yet to arrive from usa, as no Google home in nx yet). However a pi zero w for 10usd plus small speaker and mic is probably cheaper. Im sure the time will come when you can use a wemos d1 mini with the smarts inside the pi.

    • Ahh I would love a guide like that. I tried setting up HA on my Mac mini and not being a programmer I was following guides blindly and failed. I'm waiting on my rasberry pi now to see if I can get the following to work:

      -3x yee lights
      -2x xiaomi door sensors
      -4x xiaomi motion sensors
-4x xiaomi smart ZigBee power switches
      -1x mi robot
      -1x xiaomi IR transmitter
      -3x Xiaomi camera
      -1x mi router

Would love to test and work with you on this! I'm not a programmer and have no idea abt python though…

      • Cool.. I'd try and hunt for my Rpi later today. Hopefully can have a working HOWTO in good time.

    • It is, but the placement of the ethernet ruins it.

      • Though I guess I could move it.

  • UPDATE 11/01/18 1:52PM:
Hi all. Rep has confirmed the new code has been generated but they are waiting for the system to update before testing it to make sure everything works okay before it gets released.

I personally don't know the code yet, but will PM all the ones that have asked to be PM'd (some of you haven't enabled PM so I'll just message the ones who have enabled it first before updating this post with the new code when I find out).

We should all hopefully have the new code within the next few hours and I'll keep you all updated as soon as I hear back from the rep. Sorry for the delay!
