Ever since picking up some Google Home Mini's and the Xiaomi Robocop Vacuum, I've started delving into home automation and realised that a Raspberry Pi 3 is great for running HomeAssistant so I can do stuff like controlling the vacuum with Google Home so I've asked the LITB rep to see if they can provide a deal on the Raspberry Pi 3 and they did!

Apply the coupon MODELB at checkout to get US$20 off which brings the final price to US$27.50 (I got charged $35.02 on my Coles Mastercard). Just make sure you select Free Shipping to get this price.

This particular Raspberry Pi 3 is the UK VERSION A53 Quad-Core Board w/ 1GB RAM.

According to the rep, this deal will run for 5 days with an allocated 100 units of discounted stock per day in case some of you miss this deal on the first day (eg. MODELB will work 100 times today, tomorrow, Thursday etc). 1 unit per LITB account.

The LITB rep also told me they have a flash sale on the following items which may be of interest as a companion product for the Raspberry Pi 3:
DIY 16 in 1 Sensor Module Kit for US$6.99
Aluminum Alloy Metal Case With Fan for US$6.99

Don't forget to click through Cash Rewards for an extra 5% back. Enjoy!

EDIT: I'll update the Coupon code and "Unexpire" the deal when the rep lets me know the new code each day. I'll also add the new coupon code in the Comments section so that you'll get a notification if you're Subscribed to this post.

UPDATE 14/1/18 10:31PM:
The new code for today (14 January 2018) is RASPBERRYPIMODELB3

Yes very good high yield investment. Guaranteed to run crysis csgo at 4k +100fps all day long

    • Crysis csgo? Never heard of that one.

      • +1

Dammit, now i cant edit my comment :(

  • thks, grabbed 2 of the aluminium cases … the remaining 2 pi's will feel naked I'm sure in the plastic robes ….

    • Make sure that you 'pulg in' the two pins

  • +2

    You spelt USB wrong

    ….I'll get my coat…

  • Woo, been hanging out for it to be around the $35 mark, this is close enough. Thanks Takamine

    • Isn't $35.02 exactly what around $35 means? :)

      • No, only $35.01.

Surprised you weren't aware of this.

'Sorry, your coupon has exceeded the maximum limit for usage'
OP, can you request for more??

    Oops
Looks like I'll wait for tomorrow :) since the deal runs for 5 days

  • Thanks OP, got one and two of the cases as well, now have 5 Pi's when this one arrives 😂

  • Unfortunately the fan just catches when you install the suggested heatsink.

Picked one up in the last deal from LITB and it just arrived yesterday. Just be aware the clowns at LITB don't know how to package sensitive electronics. One layer of bubble wrap did not prevent mine from getting squashed. Can't see any bent pins but will find out if it is DOA tonight.

    • mine was squished as well. looks ok though. i can't test because i don't have my microsd card yet.

when i power on the pi and connect the hdmi, i get no video signal, and the light stays red. i think this is normal behaviour for pi3b if there is no sd card in the pi. can you confirm?

      • +1

Unlike normal computers, the bios type stuff is also on the SD card (nothing is on the pi board itself) so it literally can't do anything without an SD card.

      • you dont need an SD card to use it. plug in any old spare USB stick or portable hard drive and go for broke

      • Apologies for the delay, first chance to use it last night.
Yes, with no card inserted, I get no video and light stays red.

        • great, i thought so. thanks for confirming. LITB needs to hurry up and send me the microSD card i ordered with my pi 3b.

    • Yeah i got one from them a couple weeks ago and my packaging was pathetic, mine wise crushed too but worked fine.

  • Delivery took a while (4 weeks), but product arrived in good condition. Will now order more from them.

Can I just ask all those who uses RPi for home automation, what's your home automation configuration like that needs more than 1 Pi?

Personally I have basic MQTT server running on external server, and have all my household stuffs controlled using ESP8266 + arduino. It cost me less than $5 on average per devices. If home automation is to simply turn On/Off stuffs, wouldn't Sonoff makes more sense?

Not to insult anyone, purely just curious.

    • +2
      • ill probably run home assistant, but i watched some videos on node.red and i kinda wonder if node.red would be better. I've got xiaomi sensors, nodemcu's (with sensors, relays and pumps) in the mail, 1x yeelight bulb, 3x xiaomo philiips bulbs, and a couple of sonoff power outlets.

        • Home assistant is the best. Been using it for more than a year. New releases happen every 14 days and it supports more components than anything else.

Also it works great with xiaomi gear too.

        • Personally, I have external VPS running linux with Node.Red + Mosquitto MQTT broker. I have 1 arduino reading sensor values and broadcast them to MQTT, several ESP01 boards + relays to read/control switches. Google Assistance on my phone + IFTTT to do voice control, and Node.Red is the brain to perform all the logic.

I was running Node.Red + MQTT broker on my raspberry pi until I made the switch to MyRepublic. I lost my static IP and have to settle with external VPS.

        • @ausdday: why not just use a no ip dynamic dns type service?

        • +2

          Here you go.

Node red with Hass.io via plugin - https://github.com/notoriousbdg/hassio-addons

        • @kiwijunglist:

My IP from MyRepublic is behind CG-NAT. So far I have no luck accessing my home network from outside world. Also, having a VPS is easier without exposing my home network to the outside world.

        • @ausdday: I'm on MR, it's no problem punching out of CGNAT, create a reverse ssh tunnel somewhere you can then run whatever services you like and be connectable

        • @ausdday:

Hey, sorry can you explain a bit more about how you get past the NAT? I was looking at external servers but figured it might be easier to just pay MR 10$/month for the static IP

        • Yeelights are picked up by default once you install Home Assistant

        • I have Yeelights (Bulbs and LEDStrips and Bedlamps), Mi Gateway Sensors (Temp, Door/Window, Water, Motion), Mi Zigbee PowerSwitch, Nest Protects, Broadlink (A1 Temperature and mini Switch), Sonos, Google Cast, Kodi, Sony Android TV Controls, Panasonic TV Controls, Mi Air Purifier all set up in Home Assistant.

Am now in the process of trying to get Alexa connected

        • @ausdday:

I've seen others suggest that you should use home assistant to communicate with the devices and store the device states then you use node red to do the complex automations/thinking.

        • +1

          @ewanw:

I didn't punch a hole through the CGNAT, as I am using external server, which costs me only USD5 per month. I don't have to worry about people hacking into my home network.

        • @kiwijunglist:

That's what I am doing at the moment :)

          E.g. My Light switch.
Google Assistant -> IFTTT -> Node RED (using http request) -> MQTT -> ESP8266 -> Relay …. Tada

          E.g. My door sensor
ESP8266 -> MQTT -> Node RED (using MQTT) -> Node RED email Node
-> raspberry pi (node red) -> http request node -> sms gateway -> sms.

        • @ausdday: do you like getting an SMS when ever someone opens the door? Or do you only send SMS if presence detection is negative?

        • @kiwijunglist:
I get sms and email when the door is opened and closed.

        • @asa79:

It's good and easy to buy off-the-shelf parts to get home automation. Especially Mi has made things so much affordable.

However, personally, I don't really trust them, especially when all the home automation devices needs to connect to their server. Maybe it's just me, but I feel more comfortable when I have control of my own MQTT broker, password protected, own external server (virtual machine) for my devices to connect to.

But that's just my software developer habits :)

        • @ausdday: I dont have government secrets at my house, if someone hacks in to start up my anova and cooks for me, so be it ;)

if you want you can run alot of stuff on your own servers

        • +1

          @asa79:

One day they will hack into your home network, order beef through coles/woolies using your alexa and credit card, deliver to your house, start up the anova, cook the steak, unlock your smart door lock, arrange UberEat to pick up the steak, and deliver to their place, without even leaving their house.

        • @ausdday: i have the mi gear but the hub is blocked from accessing the internet

        • @ausdday: Most of the devices are communicating directly to them like yeelight, mi gateway, sonos, tvs, cast, kodi, solar inverter, without touching internet.
The only devices that touch internet are nest protect, BOM weather, alexa, google home

        • Node-Red made by IBM, so guessing you will have as much fun as Qld Health ;)

      • how do u talk to zigbee devices without integrating a zigbee gateway into HA?
do u stick a zigbee GPIO shield on the PI?

what shield do u use on yours?

    • +1

What are you guys controlling? Curious to see how you’re putting this stuff to work.

    • I don't think you need more than one Pi. You might have a separate Pi if you want your torrent client or maybe your firewall / vpn / mqtt server on a different device i guess.

  • When does the deal clock reset for the day, in eastern dst@. This would be US time I assume?

  • +1

Guys might be a good price but shipping is a nightmare still waiting for my order since the 24 th of nov. (just be aware)

    • I got mine last Friday (i think it was the same deal)

    • I'm also waiting.. tracking shows it's in AU but not received yet. Hope sometimes this week.

    • My order from Dec 13th (11/12 deal $USD 26.90) turned up a few days back, box was a little squished but pins look ok. All the other bits for it I ordered minutes later in a separate order are still in China going around in a loop according to the tracking.

  • I only just received mine yesterday that I ordered on the Dec 9. The cardboard box was pretty banged up as well, looked like the qantas baggage people were playing soccer with it. Hopefully it works

    • Same here ordered on the 15th arrived last week, thought someone had ran over mine.

  • update:i will set 4 new code in next 4 days, every day's coupon can use 100 times. ensure every user have their chance

Do you have Mi Box 3 Int deals?

      • no, xiaomi have price restrict on that item, so can't make any deal for now

        • +1

          Hopefully that changes soon

    • any chance you could post us a sneaky one here first rep? ;)

      • nope,if i do that we will be report by some one, then we will not get any more stock from xiaomi.

  • Thanks for this OP. Fingers crossed i can grab one tomorrow. When Do Codes reset?

    • +1

:) around 4 or 5 pm Chinese time everyday.

      • Either Im too slow or it hasnt updated yet. Hooing the later 😔

Bought one last Dec but haven’t received it yet. Shows Delivered, reckon parcel is lost. Sigh.

    • You should pm the rep.

    • hi mate, do you mind pm me the order number? so i can better check this for you

    • Ordered mine early December, arrived yesterday. Over 4 weeks to arrive, but did arrive.

    • I got my Pi from ~ 2/12 last week,, but the Xaiomi ordered on the 7th was only sent on by NL post on the 5th Jan. The "Delivered isn't too good tho - I'd be more inclined to suspect a Christmas post rush error at either of the post offices…

  • That went quickly.
    When does the day start?

  • Missed it. Next time.

  • +1

WARNING: I Just received mine from the december order and i has been opened and is not new (crushed box with no sticker on the bag / case) could well be refurbished or not even working as i haven't powered it up yet. But it certainly is not new..

    LITB is a horrible store

    • +9

How does someone refurbish a $35 Raspberry Pi?

      • Well, same reason some people would try to resend returned goods

        • Reselling a returned good isn't selling a refurbished product.

My point is that refurbishing a low cost product isn't exactly economical. As such, really shouldn't have been mentioned as a possibility. I could write, may have been used on ISS for nefarious purposes, doesn't make it likely though.

    • +2

Sounds like quarantine/border control had a 'look' at it

      • +1

no - they add a card and mark the parcel as i have had a parcel opened in the past.

        This certainly isn't new

        • What makes you say it's not new? Does it show signs of use? Or was it just poorly packed?

    • Any photos?

Crushed box sounds normal though. The boxes they use from the factory isn't iPhone packing (since you know… can't spend 20% profits on the box)

    • Mine is like…. someone was jumping on it…
      The box is almost flat.
      Haven't tested the device.

    • +1

all the ones I've gotten (5) regardless of seller (ali, LITB, gearbest) have arrived with crushed boxes … heck they come from china using the cheapest postage known on consolidated freight. When it gets to Australia, it's at the bottom of the austpost van….. the PIs are built tough.

    • not even working
have yet to even bother plugging it in

this about sums up the current state of affairs across the country

hey I just bought a new tv at JBHIFI and channel 7 doesnt work…. oh whats that? what do I see on the menu for channel 7? well im not sure the tv is still in the box, I haven't turned it on.. I'm just gonna say that it doesnt receive channel 7 anyway

    • Yeah I bought a sonic toothbrush from these clowns and it was USED.
The bristles had food in them.
      Probably refurbished.

  • +1

My box has "896-8660 Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Made in the United Kingdom on the back, made in UK on the lower left on the back, and a sticker with "Green English Version, Made In China (sic) on the front. The board itself is marked :"Made in U.K. The sd card doesn't click into place like on the earlier model Bs, but the system itself works fine.

    • +2

Mine is made in the UK, bought from same seller.

There's no "click" anymore according to Raspi documentation.

    • Ali have option of UK or china version, I have both, both are of high quality and now I just buy the china one as it's cheaper.

  • The free shipping option seems to take a while… any experience with the expedited postal option? Is it much faster?

    • Don't waste your money on expedited shipping option. I paid USD$4.28 for the 5-8 day option in the last deal (Dec 9?) and only received items on Monday Jan 8. I contacted customer support but got stock standard reply "delays may occur". Pushing to get the shipping fee credited, but not holding my breath.

I have hundreds of orders from Banggood, AliExpress, Gearbest, etc so I know what to expect with the various shipping options. LITB definitely cheaped out and sent this using the regular free slow boat method. Your results may vary.

      • Maybe it had something to do with the busiest postage season of the year.

        • …or maybe I looked at the information on the labels, style of tracking number, etc. which matched all the cheap free postage ones and not the other expedited ones.

        • @yamumma: I don't know, did you? You never mentioned that in your original post.

        • @eug: OP asked for people's experiences with other shipping options. I gave mine.
