I heard that the Xiaofang doesn't work here due to the app blocking? Does anyone know if the blocking includes the Dafang (this one)?

    • +2

I think you'll have to set your location to Mainland China for it to work, for all my Xiaomi products (except the vacuum cleaner), they weren't detected with the app unless my location is Mainland China

      • +1

Yeah people said recently they blocked Mainland China

        • Why would they block it?

        • +1

@BrodenIt: my guess is xiaomi want to sell these itself? or some different version. not sure

        • +1

I'm using one right now, Mainland China works.Wish the Mi Home app was better though

      • +1

the Xiaomi Light was detected for US.
which made it work with Google Home
Now my Xiaomi devices are personality split…

      • +3

I bought 5 of the Xiaofang cameras. All are blocked. The Mainland China setting does not work for the new models.

Save yourself the headache unless you're willing to apply the hack

        • Same with me , my xisofang doesn’t work with Mainland China

        • Curious if this fix would still work, or did they block gaining telnet access?

    • +1

working well. when set up app - choose china.

      • +1

I'm interested in how you got it to work as I think I have done the same thing but my cam won't initialise as per my comment below. Suggestions welcome!

        • ios. you need to download Mi Home.
update the camera (keep trying ) may not work 100%.

took my 2 years to get the smaller version to work but the dafang works much better.

        • I'll try and update stuff but have done that already.

    • I've got one and it works fine via the Mi Home app

  • +1

I recently bought this one and couldnt get it to work. I consulted probably every site and video available on this matter. It did get it to install (when you choose the correct location in the MiHome app) but it just won't initialise. In the process of returning it at the moment. I would think twice before buying.

    • If it helps I'm on iOS. Some feedback would be great as I seem to be the only one not being able to get it to work so far.

      • Make sure you are connecting using the 2.4GHz wifi - it will not initialise with 5GHz

        • Yes did that.

    • @End3viour : Exactly same senario

    • So bottom line is hit and miss? Some people got it to work, some don't. Yall in the same region, that's odd.

  • There's a seller on ebay selling them for $12.99 aud.

    Buy at own risk.
Seller has no feedback as a seller.
Make sure you use PayPal for buyer protection.
Almost certain you'll be lodging a claim.

    • Saw that. Zilch seller feedback! Dodgy

Shipping is terrible from these guys,

Still waiting for mine ordered on the 24th of November.
    (Be aware)

    • Same here for me as well.

It's almost like they're doing group buys and not selling the products directly.

    • same comment here about shipping being slow…. we are still waiting for a Raspberry pi case from them since 18th November as well

    • Finally got my stuff i ordered 1st week December. Takes a month for me for Sydney Metro. I'm sure will take longer for other people.

  • Interested to hear from those recently bought this. Heard about the geo blocking on the newest camera including xiaofang that was sent our in the past months or so.
Was ready to jump on the xiaofang train when all those geo blocking happened

    • +1

I received my Dafang last Friday after a previous deal here. Set it up using the android mihome app with a Australian mihome account but selected Mainland China in the initial app setup. Took a couple of tries to get it initialised on my wifi however it works fine now. No issues.

      • Thank you! Just bought one after reading your comment.
May I also ask if you happen to know what’s the maximum number of cameras that can be set up within the same household?

        • +1

Don't think there's a limit. You just set them up in the Mi Home app and they have separate tiles/icons to access. I've currently got 2 set up, ordered 2 more.

        • @Shuey:

Can you view them live at the same time?

        • @CVonC: AFAIK only 1 at the time. Cos you need to click/select the particular camera to access it

  • +3

Recently bought one and can confirm it’s fully up and running when chose China mainland. Working beautifully and will consider to buy another one.

  • So if this thing works, few questions:

    • I can monitor my home from overseas right?
    • All I need is to login to my account in Mi Home app and I can view from there?
    • Mi Home app is in proper full english and working?
    • Does this record 24h continuously? if so, how many GB of Micro SD should folks get? and once it passed, it will overwrite from start?
    • Security wise, what's the likelihood of this DaFang to be hacked? Being paranoid, it's good for home owner to monitor their house but not thief monitoring home owner's routine.
    • I haven't had any luck viewing from outside my home network. Could be due to my limited ADSL2 upload speed.

That's the idea though, yep log in and view. Though recently my Dafang keeps disappearing from the app, and I have to set it up again.

The camera speaks to you in Chinese during setup and you need to use Mainland China as region in the app, but most of it is in English. I wouldn't call it English market ready though.

Not too sure about constant recording and overwrite though, nor the security. Assume anything can be hacked I guess and use accordingly.

If you want something that will work out of the box without jumping through hoops, I'd recommend something like the Digoo DG-M1Q I mentioned in your other thread (or DG-M1Z if you want pan & tilt and higher res)

      • +1

Yes, I am considering that (Digoo) and also the Alfred ones (but I don't have spare smart phone).

There isn't much point is it, if the device that is linked to the mi Account and the relevant mi Account owner can't view outside home WiFi.

I can see how this works as baby monitor as you still be in the vicinity of the WiFi but when you are at work, it's odd that you can't view your home from your mobile (4G).

        • Yeh, it's not much use for monitoring while away for me. I don't know if the stream passes through China first when outside the local network. If I'm lucky I'll get a single frame before it drops out, but usually it just loops through connecting and authenticating.

When viewing internally the bitrate it reports is over 100KBps, which would max out my ADSL upload.
Be interested to know if any NBN users with a higher upload speed have any success with it.

Haven't had any better luck in SD mode either.

      1. Haven't tried overseas, but I have accessed it using my telco 4G and work Wifi without any issues.
      2. Yes
      3. Earlier version of the Mi Home app was a mix of Chinese and English, current version is more or less in English, but take the 'quality' of translation with a grain of salt. That said, easy to navigate
      4. Not sure, I have only used to as a motion cam w/o memory (video stored in server). It takes a 15-17s video over an elapse time of motion detected. It has a USB port on the back, so I reckon you can plug in a USB stick.
      5. No idea, the very least somebody needs to hack into your Wifi network to gain access since that's how you setup the camera.
      • Hey, how did you get it to record to a server ?
I have a new camera with no memory card and cannot make any recordings.

        • .. for motion detection, if you don't have a memory card.. AFAIK it automatically saves to the server (which you have to download manually once the clip is taken).

I don't think you can make any recordings w/o a memory card for continuous recording.

        • @Shuey: I dont have a memory card and I am not able to record anything to the server. I hit the record button. Then the stop button. Go to the three dots and look at video recordings, and it shows nothing :(
I am at wits end trying to save a recording through this camera. Any guidance please ?

        • +1

@AussieB: What I meant was if you use the camera for "motion detecton", you are able to record albeit automatically those 15-17s videos on the server. But if you are trying to record manually, I reckon you still need a memory card

    • I can monitor my home from overseas right?

Yes, but the speed of connection is important. From what i understand, it connects to your internet, then you view the cam via the app. Even if you're on the same network, i think it goes via China then back to your app.
I have this and a few Xiaofang setup on my account and i'll occasionally not be able to connect probably cos of internet speeds.

All I need is to login to my account in Mi Home app and I can view from there?

      Yes.

Mi Home app is in proper full english and working?

It's 90% English. Much easier to navigate now. You won't have a problem.

Does this record 24h continuously? if so, how many GB of Micro SD should folks get? and once it passed, it will overwrite from start?

It can depending on your micro SD card. My 32gb card in the Xiaofang going 24h is recording 6-7 days (150-160hrs).

Security wise, what's the likelihood of this DaFang to be hacked? Being paranoid, it's good for home owner to monitor their house but not thief monitoring home owner's routine.

Anything and everything can potentially get hacked… that's the risk of using anything connected online nowadays.
But seriously, what's the chance your account is hacked, and that hacker is a thief, and that thief knows where you live from your account, and that theif is within distance to actually rob your place?
End of the day, if your account is compromised, disconnect the cameras and set up another account.

  • Why don't they fix all the location setup issues? This is why I don't own some.

    • They focusing on getting everything prefect in China first before going global. China has plenty of buyers of tech too.

      • also maybe the various CE and ISO certifications that you have to pay for?

Not saying it wont pass I just assume xiaomi hasnt done this yet

  • Probably would've got this but I'm still waiting for my previous order to be shipped!

    • +1

Not LITB, but I ordered 2x from GearBest (unfortunately a bit more expensive).. ordered 27 Dec (Shipped 28 Dec) and arrived today 11 Jan. About 2 weeks with the free Express Delivery.

  • -3

By the time this gets delivered, the next model would've been released. So for those reasons I'm out.

I have not use any Dafang yet, but for Xiaofang I have been successfully setup 2 cameras in the Mi Home app without issue
As what some have mentioned, you have to set the server as "Mainland China" before the camera works
I have setup mine in iOS (with the latest Mi Home app)
But if you have an Android and it doesn't work for you in the latest Mi Home app
you may try to download previous version Mi Home app (apk file) and install it manually

In regards to security as some are concerning,
I found that recently there are hack (for Dafang) already developed to get rid of sending streaming to china
The hack will also allow sharing RTSP stream so you no longer need to use Mi Home App anymore
    https://github.com/EliasKotlyar/Xiaomi-Dafang-Hacks

Caution: Please do the hack at your own risk!

Lastly, I don't understand why some people blaming XiaoMi (please forgive me if I misunderstanding some)
XiaoMi does not intend to push XiaoFang and DaFang to the Globe as yet
Most of XiaoMi products (including this camera) works perfectly fine with correct setup and location
