  • shipping time 7-45 days, yikes

    • pretty standard from Chinese retailers, you can always pay for faster delivery

      • oh don't worry i'm very well-versed in shipping time from chinese retailers… i'd argue 45 days max time is longer than average though and nearly $4 for registered is higher than average. not saying its a bad deal.

        • 45 days is 6 1/2 weeks, not much different from those who offer 30 business days.

        • @newdad: All of them actually mean business days.

    Usually I'm all over new Xiaomi products without thinking, but without zigbee support, this one is hard to get excited about for $20……I must admit it is a handsome thermometer though.

    Here is the poor man's alternative for $2 : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Mini-LCD-Digital-Thermometer…

      Agreed. Now that I've actually bought their gateway, I'm not touching anything of theirs that uses wifi or bluetooth!

      • It does seem to be a retrograde step.

        • +1

          I'd argue that their gateway is actually the outdated product and WiFi is the future.

          @Ryanek:

          The whole benefit of Zigbee (the reason for the gateway) is it has extremely low power consumption, allowing wireless peripherals to run on a button cell battery for several years. Wifi would force such peripherals to be plugged in to mains power.

        • @ash2000: Talking about Mi Gateway, do they only work on wifi 2.4G??

        • @ash2000: This thermometer lasts a year on one AAA battery.

        • +1

          @Ryanek: this doesnt have wifi

        • +2

          @Ryanek: Not when it comes to home automation. These Xiaomi sensors (temperature, motion, door etc) are tiny, yet have a battery life of over a year. There's no way you could get away with that on wifi.

          Additionally, my home router is already running at over 30 clients, thanks to smart light bulbs. I'd need to buy another wifi router (at a cost much higher than $25 for the gateway) just to manage all of these clients.

          One more thought - Amazon is so convinced that Zigbee is the 'future' of home automation that they've incorporated it into their new high-end Echo.

          Imagine how long it would last on zigbee!

    I'm assuming it can save historic data without the hub?

    • It saves the data via the mi app from your mobile device…

  • Do they have a version with indoor and outdoor temperatures, ie. A weather station?

    • Yes, they do! But that would require a gateway + multiple temperature sensors to work…

    • Does anyone know of a reliable & accurate, indoor/outdoor temperature & humidity station?
      Just needs those features (doesn't need to connect with anything else), so want it simple, but it would need to be reliable.

      I have seen other weather stations in the past, that either stopped working a year down the track, or the numbers couldn't be relied upon.

  • Without the gateway (for other automation), I suppose can we view the temperature and humidity thru the Mi Home app?

    • Correct.

    • This doesnt use the gateway, uses the Lamp or Camera as gateway to connect to Wifi

      • Sorry, but pardon my ignorance.. you mentioned a Camera can be used as a gateway (I watched part of the video and it shows the Lamp, which I don't have)… which Camera are you referring to? I do have the DaFang 1080P camera. Would that work as the gateway?
