eBay 20% off Sale - The Usual Price Jack Has Started

Surprise surprise… the price jack has begun.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gigabyte-AORUS-GeForce-GTX-1080T…

I added this to my watch list on Saturday when it was $1190. Today, it's $1309.

Is this misleading conduct by the seller - inflating prices prior to a sale? I'm sick of this 'sale' bullshit. Is this something Consumer Affairs or the ACCC would be interested in?

Edit: seems Kogan got done for a similar practice so maybe it is something the ACCC would like to know about!

Edit 2: Here's the link to report it to ACCC: https://www.accc.gov.au/contact-us/contact-the-accc/report-a…

Edit 3: Company name: Austin Computers, ABN: 69780893412 - get reportin'!

EDIT 4: ARE YOU KIDDING ME, THEY RAISED THE PRICE AGAIN! IT'S NOW $1367.

Edit 5: As @nickxau pointed out, it's an obscene $1482 now, almost 22% higher than it was on Saturday.

Mod: We have removed the unobtainable deals (due to a price increase after being posted) and merged them below (5 in total), note that many were posted before this thread was made, so they will appear at the top of the comments section below. See original mod comment and discussion here. Please note that other unobtainable deals which were removed due to combining an existing sale (6 in total) which finished before this 20% off sale started weren't merged (not related to a price increase and never possible/available).

Update 19 Jan 11:40am: The eBay deal posting guidelines have been updated to reflect new requirement that deals requiring coupon codes can only be posted on the day the coupon becomes live.

    • can anyone advise whether the extended dell warranty is worth getting?

      • Yes, if your laptop dies before the extended warranty expires. No if it doesn't?

    • +1

Wish it has a removable battery

      • +1

Damn I assumed it was. Yeah this is a deal breaker now for me. Removable battery is great for troubleshooting.

        • This actually kills it for me too. Most issues from laptops I've owned are caused by older batteries. A non removable type (more common now in ultra-thin platforms) is a detraction for sure.

          • @UFO: Yeah. If it was a throwaway like a $300 ideapad then sure it's ok but for something as expensive as this $900+ definitely removable battery needed.

      • +2

You can easily replace the internal battery by simply removing a screw underneath.

        • You could but sometimes it's a lot easier to just have it ready detachable especially if over the phone troubleshooting for someone non IT or handyman literate.

I do some amateur low level IT help and have had to help some people over the internet or phone sometimes mostly seniors.

    • So how does this compare to the AMD version on price and performance?

Also for the price point is there any other options for gaming laptops?

    • +2

If you don't need to buy now, I suggest waiting at least until Intel announces mid-flight replacements for their 8th generation CPUs to deal with their current design flaw (acknowledged but secret since July 2017). At which point, I predict, every manufacturer will (attempt to) dump current inventory (at discount).

    • Thanks for the replies to my comment above, very helpful.

Only problem I see with this laptop is the shipping times. Est between Jan30-Feb28. Unfortunately I fly out Feb 11th, is there any way I can get this price matched with stock in Australia or any other equivalent laptops with better shipping times?

    • The Inspiron 15 7567 advertised above, OR the Inspiron Gaming Desktop AMD Ryzen 5 8GB RAM 128GB SSD AMD RX 570 4GB for $120 more?

      • Apples and oranges mate. One will be a lot more powerful, one will be a lot more portable. What do you want to buy?

        • Thank you Alzori. I am not into gaming , but I want something quick with a good storage capability. Portability is not a major concern. So although favouring the desktop, I was hoping for another, independent opinion.

    • Could you put another ssd in instead of a hard drive like the one on the ozb homepage?

    • Price was jacked up to 1399 and the PCTECH code no longer works… -_-

    • +1

They jacked up the price, it is now 1399 before 20% discount.

      • Yeah I know, they may jack to 1499 by tmr…….

    • They probably will jack it up to $1499.00.
Doesn't leave a good impression with Dell's tactics… Just Quietly

      • Pretty sure they will, so this deal would not be a bargain. Shame on Dell

    • Already jacked up to 1399

    • +1

Title needs to be changed since Dell has increased price

    • Is it still a good discounted value after the price jack up?

      • It seems that they will jack up to 1499, so not really bargain,

    • The price jack is pretty disgusting… You can get this laptop in America for so much cheaper than it is here.. And the AUD/USD ratio has appreciated since the last sale which they didn't jack the price. I honestly think we are better off leaving these deals off ozbargain until the deal is live else Dell will be notified of the surge in traffic to their eBay page and will hint that they should jack the prices… Anyway - will be giving this one a miss - I've been waiting on this one for a few weeks too.

      • smh bro

    • RIP this deal. All prices jacked up $200. Making this deal around 10% off instead of 20%.

      • yes.. sad.. Dell shouldn't do that.. now we will all remember..
        Have updated the post.
Out of 4 2 were price jacked and 2 other still remains the same

        • Mod 15/1: Price is currently $1119.20 after the 20% discount code, this deal will be removed when the eBay code goes live at 16/1 10am if this is still the case.

    • +3

I haven’t looked yet but the 20% off on eBay applies to Dell. Wouldn’t it be cheaper on their eBay store? (If they have a listing of it on there).

Edit - cheaper on dells eBay store https://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Alienware-25-Gaming-Monitor-AW2518…
      Price comes to $399.

      • What coupon? PCTECH didn't work for me.

          Because the code starts Tuesday

      • How can I get to the $399 price? It's currently $599 after some random 14% off, and if I take 20% off with PCTECH it comes to $480 ish

        • This was merged (the post). the OP posted it 2 days before it started, now it has been jacked.

2 inches too small. My wife told me so.

    • Not sure why they don't sell the g-sync version in Australia!

    • +1

What refresh rates can this monitor run that are less tha 240hz?

      • -4

        2

        • Actually as a technicality, all panels have a minimum refresh rate, and it's (currently) always much higher than 2hz =P (30+ generally)

      • 239

      • Why?

        • Because I don’t expect running at 240hz to be viable in certain games. I won’t be using freesync as I have a gtx card

          • @exit: I think you need to do some more research :p

            You'll be fine don't worry :)

          • -4

@exit: @scuderiarmani: Yeah I heard Freesync works with Nvidia.

          • @exit: If you run at more than 120FPS plus or minus screen tearing becomes invisible or much less noticeable or jarring than using lower FPS.

      • Freesync/gsync are dynamic refresh rates i think. The monitor will refresh at whatever rate (above 60?) that the graphics card outputs?

        • With G-sync the video card waits until the monitor sends a "ready to refresh" message before sending each frame.

Not sure exactly how Freesync works but refresh rate is determined by monitor alone.

          • @Diji1: I thought you needed an AMD card to use Freesync, but you could use Adaptive Sync with any brand card, although it apparently doesn't produce as good results as the other two.

      • -2

What refresh rates can this monitor run that are less tha 240hz?

Anything between some low number and 240. In normal use you would leave it set to 240Hz and any framerate will run fine albeit with noticeable tearing at low FPS.

I believe you should be able to set V-sync in games which will lock you to 60FPS without tearing (since 60 divides evenly into 240) provided you can render the game at 60FPS.

        • +2

Vsync would set it to the refresh rate of the monitor = 240hz, unless you've manually set it to something lower. Ideally you'd run 120fps+ otherwise this monitor is not worth it.

          • -3

            @NebulAe: I don't think you understand how V-sync works.

          • @NebulAe: @Diji1: Actually, NebulAe is correct. Vsync locks the graphics card's update to wait on the monitor refresh, tying it to the monitor refresh frequency. It won't necessarily have a new frame to sent each Hz, but it won't send a partial screen (w/ tearing). If the GPU can do 240FPS, it will cap at 240 FPS on 240 Hz. It will not go higher. If you're GPU only outputs say 30 FPS, then it will post 30 frames per second, but lock it to the 240Hz cycle. There is some benefit to having a higher refresh rate monitor, while still pushing a lower frame rate, but no-vsync is better for gaming (but with tearing).

    • +5

I think most/all of you would benefit immensely from reading this post about vsync/gsync/freesync/etc
      https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/4p0q7a/lets_talk_…

    • 1080p and TN are big no no.

      • i highly doubt any one want IPS and 1440p for 240hz (with price in mind)

        • yeap. that's gonna cost ya.

    • +1

fyi - gtx1080 and 1080ti perfroms better relatively in 2k than fhd if your cpu is slightly dated like my 4790k. x-tested 4 different monitors ranging from fhd, fhd 21:9, 2k, 2k 165hz; 2k res + starts to get more gpu intensive, less load on cpu.

this wont be good for those with matured cpu

    • Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question, but would I be able to use this monitor for my PS4? Thanks in advance.

      • +1

Yes but the 240hz will only work with a PC.

      • +1

there wont really be a point since ps4 games are locked to either 30 or 60 fps you wont get the benefit of the extra hz since its not powerful enough

        • Do you have an idea of what sort of monitor I should be looking after? I'm a real novice when it comes to these things.

          • @jman89: Getting a standard 60hz IPS Monitor would save you a lot of money and also provide the best image quality if you intend to only use it with a PS4.

    • -5

$400 for a TN 1080p, you must be having a laugh. I don't care what the refresh rate is, no TN or 1080p PC display is worth $400.

      • What are some better options for 144hz+?

        • -1

As someone who has a 144+Hz monitor and would not want to go back to lower refresh rates, I would still tell anyone to put resolution and IPS before refresh rate.
Something like this may not be as smooth, but it's going to be look a heck of a lot better.

          • +1

            @O15: 60Hz vs 240Hz
            No AMD FreeSync
            More expensive
            Not from Dell official store

You're comparing apples and oranges. This post is for a GAMING monitor.

          • +1

            @O15: @Marty131:
            Buy it, then.
Hopefully you never see it next to a higher resolution or IPS display.

          • @O15: @Marty131: Pro gamers don't buy 60hz anymore. You get a much more competitive advantage at 144hz, and 240hz is nuts in comparison to 60hz.

            Also, negging for price jack

          • @O15: @Putnum: You're preaching to the choir! @O15 is the one disputing the merit of this over a 60Hz IPS.

    • +1

You guys have to remember that this isn't going to be the nicest for picture quality, it's all about it's performance and it's going to be killer in any fast paced fps game like csgo. I'll be buying one regardless.

    • +4

      Jacked to $479.20.

      • was going to get it at 400 guess not anymore haha

      • Aaand there goes my impulse buy…

      • Is that legal. I'd be complaining.

      • I sent a message and said they were basically false advertising the deal. I'll see what they say.

New message from: dell_australia Top Rated Seller(9,456Green Star)

        Thanks for your email enquiry

With regards to this item promotion prices can change from time to time as promotions can finish and new promotions can start.

You will note that we have not changed the recommended retail price of the item, just the promotion price (as this promotion ended). There is a new price now set and you are still saving $100 off the RRP of the product with a new promotion now implemented.

We will not be providing you a link to the previous price, as the new price for the items are now set.

        Kind regards
        Joe

        • +1

To be fair, they didn't advertise this promotion, you did.. So it's unfair to say that they were false advertising as the 20% off isn't officially advertised until today at 10am.

        • +1

          @doweyy:

There initial promotion didn't end though, still the same price on their website.

Oh well, they will probably get done like Kogan did eventually.

    • They jacked the price up and are not fulfilling this deal based on their email

    • Negging deal for changing the price. Not cheap anymore.

How do you get sales history on specific items? I am curious to know. I recently bought a Lenovo hybrid from JW computers when eBay had 10%off. I was bummed when I saw 20% off eBay including jw computers. But when I actually looked at the listing JW price hacked the item by 20% so now it's more expensive then the price I paid. I don't understand the eBay tactics. As always I rely on ozbargain if anything is a good deal it will come up here.

        • +1

@bamsegod: Go to an eBay listing i.e. this one (random one from front page), and it should say " 7 available / 3 sold in one hour ". Click on the "3 sold" part and it leads to this page.
