  • can this phone be used with aldi mobile? Considering it does not have band 28

    • Yes

      • does aldi even use band 28? honestly im not even sure what band 28 means, can you please explain? thankyou

        • +2

yes, aldi is on Telstra and they use band 28 …. more an issue in country areas or in underground carparks ….
band 28 is a lower frequency, used to be used for TV, not used for phones and it travels further in country areas, and better through concrete walls.

If you are have an avo smash in a city cafe, not an issue.

        • @garage sale: and that's the answer right there I needed. I live in the city but on the ground floor of an apartment block with thick concrete walls. I need band 28. Thanks!

I'm with forenzic - Is there somewhere easy to see what major networks these Xiaomi/China phones work on that lists it something like this (as I don't really understand how the bands work and with who) - i.e.just as an example..

      Telstra - 4G/3G
      Vodaphone - 3G only
      OPTUS - 4G only - no voice
      Telechoice - 4G/3G
      Amaysim - 3G only
      ETC

I have been stung before with a phone that worked with 4G data but I couldn't make or receive calls with a Telstra sim, but it works fully with Vodaphone. I also have other Xiaomi phones that aren't 'Band28' with Telechoice sims and they work with 4G. It's all a bit confusing.

      TIA

https://willmyphonework.net/ allows you to select Brand, Model, Country and Carrier.

        • Thanks - I looked there but couldn't see this phone (or the one I bought that didn't work on Telstra - Maze Alpha) but I will bookmark the site for future reference.
          Cheers

        • @Fitzy777: Gotta do it the old fashioned way. This will list the 3G and 4G bands used by the Telstra network.

I can't even work out the plus prime note pro 4 5 Redmi Xia,ohmy

        • Or, just what is the effect of "no band 28".

Though potentially misleading, because other bands missing might be a problem, and also depends on the specific cell towers near you (regional), so it wouldn't be a definitive answer - but would be a start.

      • voda uses 850mhz which more of the chinadroids have.

There are several 4G bands, you phone will use the one with the best signal, it's just that band 28 travels further in the open and is better through walls then say 1800mhz, so you might find that you are in an areas with no coverage, but a phone with band 28 does get a signal because the other one has tried say 1800mhz, couldn't get signal but found band 28.

      • there are 2 components that the phone uses for connection
1 - frequency, and there are several available from each carrier
2 - encoding of signal, this is where 3G, 4G comes in.

The carriers tend to reserve particular frequencies for particular methods of encoding signals.
The bonus with 4G is fast data, you can easily get 40mbit …. faster than broadband in most homes.

Band 28 is low frequency 700mhz and uses 4G encoding, one of several frequencies to use 4G. It's used by Telstra, Optus and TPG for data.

in the lower frequency Voda uses 850mhz.

so it's not just 3G or 4G but also which frequencies (bands) they support.

Some phones can use use multiple bands, so data gets even faster ……

  • is a redmi note 4 better than this?

    • -1

      this is the "note 5"

      • +3

No, this is the "Redmi 5+", Redmi Note 5 and Note 5+ are coming out soon with a better processor.

Redmi 5+ have a bigger screen, otherwise the spec is very similar to the Redmi Note 4.

As the 5+ is a newer model, it should receive longer firmware support than the Note 4 if we buy today.

        • +1

All correct except firmware as Xiaomi release MIUI for all their older years old models. Redmi 1S got it last night and it's a four year old phone.

        • +4

Some articles say the Redmi 5+ is the new Note 5, and that Xiaomi are dropping the Note series. Then there are other articles are say the Note 5 is real. Don't know what to believe.

        • @adrianhughes1998: What version of Android is it running? Still waiting for MIUI 9 on my Redmi Note 3.

        • @flaminglemon: 4.4 KitKat.

        • @adrianhughes1998: Better than nothing, I suppose. Can't be sure if they put security updates in. Good for a travel phone.

        • +2

@flaminglemon: News come out last few days confirmed the new RN5/5+ with SD630/636.

        • @flaminglemon: the Redmi 1s hasn't had a security patch update since October 2016. But gets split screen and all that. Xiaomi are either late or one major android release only, but can't give them that much shit - they do well.

        • @Kampfer: just bought a Redmi note 4 for an ex. And she's playing up again so now I have three phones at my disposal.

Something tells me I should make a loss, sell and get the upcoming Redmi note 5

        • @bargainaus: I'm hoping it's true. I love my Note 3, and it still works fine, but wouldn't mind an update.

        • +1

@adrianhughes1998: You buy phones for your exes? I'm the opposite. I avoid calls from mine.

        • +1

@flaminglemon: I too have a Note 3, will become 2 years old in July and that thing is still kicking!

But time to get a 4/64 GB RAM/ROM now, Chrome specifically is eating up a lot of RAM out of 2GB in Note 3.

        • @flaminglemon: wanted to be friends but too hard now. So has gone the way of an overheated battery. I learn lesson for future.

However bargain hunting lessons are never learned. Keep buying at all costs

      • FWIW, Kimovil has it listed with Aliases: Redmi Rise Note 5, Hongmi Rice 5, Redmi Note 5

  • Has anyone tried out one of these and a redmi note 4?
Trying to figure out if the camera is better, most reviews don't directly compare them so it's hard to tell.
Love my note 4 but the camera is pretty average!

    • Even with HDR+ Mod?

      • Even with the built in HDR enabled? Top right of camera screen.
Contrary to some comments both our Note 4X's take great photos.

    • If you want great quality photos - use a dedicated camera… even my 10 year old D700 beats the crap out of my S8+ in terms of photo quality.
for a sub $200 phone you won't be getting high quality pics from it.

      • The biggest drawback of D700 is its size/weight. And it needs post processing to get panoramic or HDR photos.
I have a D90, has 20K+ shots in its records over the past 10 years, but that number only increased by less than 50 in 2017

        • Sensors are so small on these phone that you'd only use them for happy snaps. I'm not saying go buy an old D700 and lug it around. Sony A7RII :).. awesome little camera!…

    • Don't expect the world with these budget xiaomi's. Camera (and maybe screen quality) is the only thing that differentiates a flagship from one of these xiaomi's.

    • For a better camera, maybe pay a little more for the Xiaomi Mi A1?

Yup. Still pretty average. Try one of their Mi phones if you want to stick with Xiaomi.

  • Just a heads up with this phone
It does not have an OFFICIAL Global Rom yet AFAIK
only China Rom. Personally I would wait till official Global Rom is available

    • +2

It says "Official Global ROM" in the title on the GB site !

      [HK Stock][Official Global ROM]Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus 5.99 Inch 4G LTE Smartphone 18:9 Full Screen MIUI 9 3GB 32GB Snapdragon 625 Octa Core 12.0MP Camera Touch ID 4000mAh Battery - Gold

      • I think costas60 is right.

        http://en.miui.com/download-340.html

They only have official China roms on their site.

      • they might have rooted the phone and flashed with official ROM, problem is rooted phones sometimes have issues with OTA updates.

    • +3

      Offical Global ROM download:
      http://en.miui.com/thread-1501658-1-1.html

      • Nothing official by Xiaomi only China Rom on their website
        http://en.miui.com/download-340.html

        • What Kampfer linked to is legit. It's from a Xiaomi staff member (super moderator) and the link to the update is a miui URL. Looks like Xiaomi haven't got round to updating their download page yet.

        • @Clear: that is not the official rom and if you read it,people have had all sorts of problems after installing it including bricked phones

  • 5.99 inch capacitive screen

    Too big.

    • +1

      thats what she said

  • for about $40 extra, you can get 4GB of RAM and 64GB ROM

  • This looks like the cheapest this phone has been - I think it was always over $200 before. Is that right?

With the new models about to come out, might get cheaper still?

Wait, this is the next model…? how it is cheaper?
