  • This doesn't sound right…
"Ampcore II cables include a built-in 56kΩ resistor which prevents your device from over-heating."
    How does this prevent overheating?

    • There have been problems in the past with usb-c cables having the incorrect resistors and pulling too much charge into devices resulting in issues.

      • the device can pull as much charge as it wants, controlled by chips on the phone, the issue might be the resistor stops the phone drawing excess current and heating up the connector.

that is a very short cable …… you wouldn't be able to charge and use phone unless VERY close to the charger, I would have expected 1M cable.

        • +1

The device can definitely pull up as much as it wants as long as the cable and the charger chips let it. What happens is there is a handshake between these devices that check what each is safely capable of in some of the cheaper cables they have incorrect information in the handshake telling it can handle more than it can safely and drawing too much power. It is a well know issue with usb c cables and their handling of greater amounts of power than past cables with many cheaper cables that aren't up to spec frying devices. Now I am not an electrical engineer so I am happy to be corrected on the details but this is how I understand it.

          Or with a power bank…?

Pretty much the main reason you buy a 30cm cable. Or to plug into a computer etc

        • But if an older device or power source is in use on either end, no negotiation can take place, and ultimately you end up with a quite limited charging speed.
          Is that about right?

        • +4

I find 30cm cables perfect for overnight charging.

        • +4

          This is wrong.

There are any number of articles that describe the issue thoroughly, however the quick summary is:
The resistor is a primitive way of the charger communicating with the device. In the early days of USB-C cable makers would use different values to trick the phone/charger in to thinking it could draw more current than it should have been able to leading to damaged chargers and phone connectors (basically destroying the phone). 56kOhm is the correct value to indicate a USB-A to USB-C cable, hence the charger/device will share the right amount of current. Resistors are not needed in C-C cables.

1m cables already exist. Just get one of them. Why would you buy a 30cm cable in the first place if you require a 1m cable?

        • @Orpheus: He didn't say that he wanted to buy a cable?

        • +1

@robertm: So why is he saying its too short if its not for himself? Is he trying to say its too short a cable for everyone? Well pretty sure people have a need for cables shorter than 1m.

        • Probably designed for power banks.

        • +1

          @Spackbace:

Or to plug into a computer etc

There's no point buying a 3A cable for computer charging. You're not drawing 3A from a USB port I don't think.

It's good for power banks though.

I think this cable is useful, but I don't want to pay $3 for it.

        • Yes lowest common denominator is the old usb stanard of 1amp 5v ….as a usb port on a pc …. It can check the pins on the power source and draw more if pins indicate charger not an old pc usb port then up to 2.1 amps ….if its QC it does a smart handshake to see if higher voltage than 5v …..

Its not the cable its the devices on each end ….cable is dumb but you want thick wire

    • I'm not sure it will prevent overheating, but it should prevent the magic smoke escaping, as detailed in How to Buy USB Type-C Cables That Won’t Fry Your Gadgets.

  • How do these compare to Ampcore Turbo cables? BW-MF9?
    https://www.banggood.com/BlitzWolf-Ampcore-Turbo-MF9-Braided…

  • +1

    Doesn't look like braided

    • -1

and doesnt say turbo like TC-9!!

    • The wire sheath underneath the plastic slip would be the braided component

  • If anyone wants a 2.5m cable here is one for $6.33. Any idea on the quality of this one? https://www.banggood.com/BlitzWolf-BW-TC3-3A-USB-Type-C-Brai…

    • It's good. And the price is good if genuine.

  • Thanks grabbed one - I like having some short cables around

  • Any Micro USB ones like this?

  • +1

Awesome - ordered a couple. Now to wait for the lightning versions.
When will xiaomi make all their powerbanks charge with usb c and come with usb c cables?

    • Apart from their ZMI range I know they have just recently brought out a version of their 10,000mha powerbank with USB C and it also has 2 USB A ports. As well I know that Blitzwolf also have some available now. What I really want to see in the new powerbanks though is more USB PD as more devices will be taking up that technology as they switch to USB C and that is one of the real advantages of USB C.

  • Thanks OP, bought a couple

  • +1

If you like longer version, 1M ones are available for pre-order now, A$3.80

    • Great they've started taking orders for these now. I'll put a new post up!

  • Anyone know of a 0.3m USB A to C cable with 3.0 transfer speeds for use with a Samsung T3?

    • They don't give you one in the box?

      • They do, I'm just after a shorter one. 15cm would be ideal but that's an even less popular length.

        • Maybe wait and see. They might release one if they also put out a version 2 in their turbo range.

        • @UponOccasion: Here's hoping!

  • so im new to this usb c business. waiting on delivery of new xperia xz1 which is usb c. i thought you could just get these mickey mouse adapters, converts from micro usb to usb c. not a good idea??
so now gotta find proper cables for usb c mobile?? otherwise overheat etc..
    what a headache.
good info on Benson Leung above link. but they are all on amazon so costly price. dont know what to do.. what are people doing in regards to these cables?
i guess i could just buy oem cables…

    • +1

The micro to c adapters are fine if they are good quality up to spec ones, the Xiaomi ones are good for example but really they're a stop gap and ideally you wanna get some decent cables to use around the house. I am not sure how much of an impact the conversion has on charging speeds but at prices of 3.70 for a top quality one may as well bite the bullet while it's cheap mate. Try one of these https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/358649

      • thanks bud for reply

  • Any chance of the braided micro-usb 1M cables? :)

  • is it a fast charging cable?

    • From the description: "Fast Charging: Supports 3.6-12V fast charging at up to 3A and is compatible with Qualcomm QC2.0, QC3.0, MTK Pump Express Plus and other fast charging technologies."

  • So I might receive this in early April?

    • Probably. Usually takes about 3 weeks for banggood deliveries to arrive if they're in stock but preorders always seem to take forever.

  • +1

Got mine this week, very good quality and yes they work fine for fast charging.
