Prepaid Boost LG L40 - $9 at Big W

670

There's a lot of deal's up on here lately for cheap phones. Think the cheapest I've seen is the Boost Luna for 19 a while back. 9 bucks for that Telstra Lite dumbphone is nice, but this tops it for me, especially since it comes with 10 bucks credit, effectively making the phone free if you were intending on joining Boost. Never mind, apparently the 9 buck Telstra Lite comes with $15 credit, meaning 9 for 15 leaves you getting the phone for negative 6 bucks, instead of 9 for this, with 10 credit, meaning the phone is negative 1 bone. Go buy the other phone and save another 5 bones!

This doesn't seem to be a catalogue item. I asked the girl at the register and she said it wasn't a clearance item, assumed it to be part of this week's catalogue despite not being mentioned, so I'd not be surprised if it's gone back up to full price next Wednesday. Eastland had 20 odd of them in the back, and Lilydale (my other local) had 6 when I rang to check. It's probably worth phoning your local before heading in though.

Also, there's two colors available, black and white. Take that, Telstra Lite, with your one color choice.

    • Beat me too it, specs be up now.

  • +1

    Just for the info
Telstra Lite $9 came with $15 credit :)

    • Sheeeeet. Not the ones near me, nearly grabbed one a week or so before I caved and got a 3310 in late December.

    • Where is this handset being offered?

  • I doubt this is nationwide?

    • I'm not sure, I don't want to say yay or nay really. It was available at both my locals though. I'll ring a store in a couple different states tomorrow if I get the time.

  • +1

512MB RAM will choke over most tasks other than calls/texts

    • +6

First thing I did was disable / uninstall just about everything on there that wasn't essential.

It's running okay so far. I've got the ABC Kids app on there, the little one is watching The Wiggles right now, streaming along fine, no lag or anything, app hasn't crashed either, which is nice. Her cheapo tablet I got from Woolies for 10 bucks a year or so back will crash every second or third video.

    • +6

For 9 dollars if you can only make calls/texts its still pretty good.

      • +1

  • 4GB storage. Holy crap that must only fit the operating system and apps and that's all. At least it has a micro SD slot capable of a 32GB card.

    • It's got about 1.5GB of space actually available to the user, but yeah, if it had no SD slot it'd be pretty damn pointless.

  • +2

If you look at this way: buy a charger, cable, headset SIMCARD with credit, FM radio with a free phone and camera inside! It's not a bad deal!

    • +1

Earphones are actually pretty decent, as are most LG ones I've had in the past, I'm definitely not leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard.

  • Can we use the sim in another phone?

    • Yeah man, it's just a standard SIM card. It's actually a micro, but it comes with the adapter slot thing to throw it in older phones no fuss.

  • Can create an app with weather update and news update. Have it as display in morning ;)

    • My kid's using it at the moment, bought thing for her anyway, but when I was clearing out all the built-in crap to give it a little less workload, there was a built in weather app. Should do what you want :)

      • Yes great !! Also was thinkinglike OzBargain buzzer ;)
Buzz when some awesome deal come

        • You are the OzB King, after all.

      • Kid should be given a dumb phone

        • Yeah, except that

. The smaller screen is more likely to cause strain
. Those phones have no apps, meaning all the learning apps, animal apps, that sorta stuff, won't work
. There's no internet, so no streaming kiddie shows, would need to buy an SD card
. This is the same price as the cheapest dumb phone available
. Touch screens are more intuitive for kids

          And so on.

You're an idiot to trust a kid with a thousand dollar iPhone, but this is a throwaway item at this price.

        • Just because your first mobile phone was a dumb phone doesn't mean that everyone else should also have the same experience. Or else let's switch back to VHS.

        • @kururii:

Let the kids use Beta tapes, not NetFlix

  • Cheap MP3 player.

Been looking for something to stream music to the x50 without wasting my phone's battery

  • my new GPS and Dashcam sorted.

    • +1

Not sure if srs, but I wouldn't trust it's ability to navigate a great deal. Suppose if you got an offline GPS app you might do okay though.

  • Went to the Big W QV Melbourne. The staff didn't claim to have one…

    • Sheeeeeeet.

    • Snotty nosed kid stashem em behind counter

    • Big W Forest Hill and Ringwood are out of stock, I got the last one at Ringwood.

  • Telstra lite is $69 on the Big W site, where to get for $9?

    • Harvey Norman and Officeworks are both doing them for 9 still AFAIK.

      • Can you give me a link? Checked but can't find it

        • First thing that came up in Google https://www.harveynorman.com.au/telstra-zte-lite-f327s-pre-p…

Officeworks have gone back to 39, but they have the price beat guarantee, which means they'll beat the 9 bucks at HN by 5%, so it should be 8.55 at Officeworks.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem: Ahh, I didn't realise it was a dumb phone. In that case the Boost phone is a much better deal!

        • @realfancyman: There's a similar one, called something like Telstra Smart Lite or Lite Plus or something that is cheap and a smartphone, usually hovers around the 29 mark.

I've confused the two before, it's not the best naming they've got going on there.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem: Yes I think I was getting confused with that one as well. Thanks for the deal OP

    Just bought 1000000;;@;2&=

    • How much profit are you counting on?

      • +4

Broden isn't buying to make a profit, he's looking for a bunch of cheap screens for those photos of his eneloops, keep up.

    • +1

      Go away.

      • -2

        I do what I want.

  • Can this be unlocked ?

    • I mean, yes.

But easily? I don't know. I did a quick Google when posting and didn't find anyone on eBay doing them. Not to say there isn't a guy out there though.

    • Ebay search will tell you

  • 512mb RAM

    LOL

    114g

It can't even make a decent paperweight.

    • +1

You got some heavy ass paper.

Open to trading some sheets for one of these phones?

  • Do you need to show ID when buying it?

    • No. You only need to supply ID when activating a SIM card.

      • Hmm. Could be good to buy as a dedicated smart lightbulb controller.

    • Like hollykryten said, you only need it for the SIM activation. I got two of them for my 2 year old to watch Wiggles on if her tablet dies. No SIM needed for me.

  • +1

This or my iPhone 4 in my drawer?

    • +13

Sell the iPhone for 81 dollars.

      Buy 9 of these.

Sell them all for for 10 a piece.

      Make 9 dollars profit.

      Free phone.

      • +1

  • +2

    3.5mm jack Yes

    • +2

And with 1.5GB of storage after the OS's cut, you've basically got an iPod Shuffle!

  • +1

Buy this enjoy the credit and headphones.
$1 SIM TO get free Guzman burrito and one free uber ride.

I can't imagine what impact Ozbargain has had on me. Smart Frugalists we are.

    • I dig your enthusiasm, is there a limit to how many SIMs an individual can have registered to their name at one time or nah? I thought there was at one point but maybe they ditched it?

    • It’s obvious you know all the tricks to make this deal basically free for you.

    • +1

Second Grill'd app for more free burgers? :P

  • VIC No Stock at Parkmore, Southland, Waverly Gardens.
    Checking other stores. :)
    Thanks OP!

    • +1

Sorry to hear man, best of luck searching!

  • What's the Telstra dumb phone he's talking about?

      • I can throw it in the OP if you want, didn't think anyone would care too much tbh.

I can't personally speak for there being credit with it, I've not seen that, it's just what a dude on here said.

      • So does this have any credit included?

  • +1

    Worth stomping on

  • wonder if i buy it and install a monero miner on there, i can eventually get the cost of the $9 back before the phone dies.

    • +1

Yes; plus electricity for recharges $20

  • "Released 2014, April" um, yeah.
Maybe good for your 10yr old to take to school.

    • +2

My Nexus 5 was released a good half a year before that. The majority of people know in 2018's phones still don't compare.

    • If ya don't mind havin ya kud bullied for havin a shit fone

      • +1

i gave my kid dumb phone. He knows he need it to use for call & sms. Just because of bullies if you want to give your kid high end phone then you shouldn't because kids will find bullies in some form in the life & they should do things just because of bullies.

  • +8

    3.5mm jack
    FM radio
    Micro-sd slot
    Removable battery compartment
    114g

This thing has more stuffs than iPhone.

  • Locked to boost/telstra network presumably?

    • +1

Lol my father just abuses them for 10 mins about how he has been with Telstra for X years and Telstra free unblock the handset rofl…

  • +1

Cheapest phone I ever bought was the Optus alcotel Pixi 4.5 4G for $29 which came with $20 GP credit effectively making the phone $9 if the Google Play credit is of any value to you… Still working after 2 years and much better spec phone. Managed to unlock it free online with a firmware flag of some sort which was a nice bonus.

  • Awesome deal. It had me really keen to pick one up for my daughter.
I called most Big W in Sydney with no luck…. Did anyone find stock in NSW?

    • +2

no stock at Top Ryde, Macq Centre, Winston Hills,Auburn, Merrylands, Blacktown, Rouse Hill, Chullora, Bankstown… if this helps anyone.
Please let me know if you found some in Sydney

  • -8

Absolutely useless piece of rubbish but considering the boost credit is worth more than the cost of the package, not a bad deal if you dont mind Boost and a tiny useless phone that is only good for making and receiving calls and SMS.

    • +1

This might be useless to you, but if I got my hands on one of these I'd consider myself lucky. Not for use personally but this would be a great phone for elderly relatives of mine who'd do nothing but use this for calls and maybe texts, especially in this day and age of ~$2000 phones and ever-advancing technology.

      Have a neg.

      • will be hard to find a $9 smart phone regardless of spec.

    • Invalid use of negs mate…
