Wow, nice price OP, that is a "bit" cheaper than JB HiFi price of $1999 :-) (Like $1084 cheaper)
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/msi-gami…

    • +3

Specs are a bit different with the JB Hifi one.

      • 16GB RAM
      • faster version of GTX 1050 (probably Ti edition?) with 4 GB VRAM
      • PCIE 128GB SSD
      • i7 CPU

which is still pricey when you compare it to say, a ASUS ROG Strix ZX553VE for $1499.

      • Both the mobile GTX 1050 & Ti come in 2 & 4GB variants.

    • That's i7

  • +1

Great price. I considered this at HVN for around $1400 a few weeks ago.

  • So what I need to buy to make it work here just buy a new power cable where and how much?

    • +2

The adaptors are typically 120v to 240v capable. If you are lucky the wall to adaptor section will be swappable and can just grab a $5 'kettle cord'

      • +3

Typically figure8 (IEC C7) cord, not kettle cord (IEC C13)

Sometime figure 8 with earth pin below (IEC C5).

    • Just go out and buy a aus laptop charge cable most likely it’s the figure 8 variant but maybe the Mickey Mouse ears one. Just wait till it arrives then go to officeworks grab the one you need probably will come in at about 5-10$. And just use the aus power cable with the power brick that came with it. Or use a adapter USA to aus but that’s just another thing to carry around.

hold on…the title says i7 but specs says i5?

    • thats what i am about to say either. :D

  • These are getting serious price cuts because of the upcoming embedded Vega GPUs on newer Intel (sometimes hexacore or more) setups.

I believe the Vega M GL is a direct competitor to the 1050ti, while the GH is a 1060 competitor. That and the manufacturers getting the earliest deals on SSD and RAM price drops should see the mid-range market final calm down.

  • Isn't this better? Acer Aspire 5, 15.6" Full HD, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8550U, GeForce MX150, 8GB DDR4 Memory, 256GB SSD, A515-51G-89LS https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075KCB6TH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_DhQD…

    • +1

that has a U processor though

    • +1

      MX150 is a GT 1030.

The Nvidia GeForce MX150 is a dedicated entry-level mobile graphics card for laptops based on the GP108 chip with the Pascal architecture. It was announced mid 2017 and is the mobile version of the desktop GeForce GT 1030.

      • so the GT1050 is better than MX150?
I still think the i7-8550U is better bang.
Isn't there a downside being HQ? Heavier and warmer?]
But maybe the Acer is more for everyday use not for gaming.

        • There's no maybe here: that's exactly the distinction between the two.

        • It's a GTX 1050 not GT 1050, GT is the designation of a non-gaming graphics card and is reserved for cards of weaker performance. A GTX 1050 is much faster than the MX150 but will require more power.

I’d stay away from MSI, never seen a single model of theirs be reliable.

    • -1

Says someone that has never actually bought/used a MSI?

      • +2

Says somebody that works in the consumer IT industry and has consistently (for years) seen above average RMA’s and faults with the MSI brand, and it’s not even model specific, they just have a significantly higher fault rate than other brands.

  • is this any good for 4k video editing?

    • +1

You need more cores and thread than this weak i5. 4k video editing is intensive.

  • Having the shittiest luck with my 72VR6RE from day 1…. the computer would turn off on its own, won't charge. Been to MSI RMA 3 times now and been given the run around of 'trouble shooting'. Shop I bought from 'Computer Alliance' wasn't helpful at all. All the shit about, ohh we don't price match MSY or Umart because we have good after sales support is donkey balls thank you. This isn't what I'd expect after buying a $4000 laptop. Latest update is trying to replace the darn laptop….

I always bought MSI products, GPU, Motherboard etc, but after going through this shit, my perception of their brand has taken a turn.

I got my work to buy MSI laptops as well and they all are having battery drama from day 1.

    • lol $4,000 laptop???? That thing must burn hot on boot up!

      • Yeh…. I've been repenting since the first month on buying it…. impulse purchase to work on…and a very expensive lesson I want to forget about… :(

        • +4

@shadowarrior: It's very simple, take it back and demand a refund and assert your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Computer Alliance can't legally redirect you to MSI and having it RMA'd 3 times is an unreasonable amount of time. The ACL is pretty clear on this.

Now is the time to do this. If the laptop is still broken, and its pending a replacement, say forget the replacement, I want a refund as per my rights under the ACL.

        • +1

@misterpotatomato: Computer Alliance pretty much told me, the max they can do is send it to MSI….but preferred that I do that myself since 'there's no difference'. I still made them send it to MSI..they couldn't find any problem, then gave it back after formatting and resetting my Windows 10 pro upgrade (I had paid to purchase an upgrade from the pre-installed Win10 Home to Win10 Pro). When asked for a reason, they said the computer's spec says its meant to have win10 Home and installing Win10 Pro is outside the spec supported. I laughed, asked them if they were serious…and walked away.

Second time again to Computer Alliance, sent to MSI, they couldn't find the problem, sent it back. Good thing I didn't upgrade to an unsupported Windows version. They gave it back after formatting the computer when I kept repeating the problem is something related to a hardware fault. :)

Third time, I drove up from Gold Coast to Sydney (MSI Service Center) because of the drama with their freight (Startrack). MSI says don't give the laptop for pickup without a manual con-note. Star track drivers every time they come to pick up, say they know nothing about con notes. Call up Star track and they go yep, we definitely sent a con note with the driver. After that went on for a month of rebooking the pickup for 4 times, I decided to go to Sydney and sort it out myself instead.

This was 1st week of Jan 2018. They supposedly put a new battery in it while I was there. It worked for all of 2 weeks, before being back to the same problem.

Contacted MSI again, first had to go through 'this is normal laptop behavior'. Nope, please read previous RMA notes and check videos. Oh..please send it back for us to repair. Tell them I don't want it repaired. Ok please make a note on the service letter that you want a replacement and we will assess your request. Sent that through this weekend and now waiting for their reply back :|

How much support would I get under ACL? Wouldn't they just ask if the manufacturer is 'attempting to resolve' hence let me be in MSI's mercy?

        • +1

          @shadowarrior:

The guy said you have to demand a refund under ACL.

        • @serpserpserp: Am going to call ACCC and confirm my rights. My main question is when can I demand a refund vs 'they are trying to assist you by repairing it or offering to replace it'.

But yeah thanks for reminding me about ACCC :)

        • +1

          @shadowarrior:

Okay so I'm not a lawyer and I'm not an expert on the ACL but I have, several times, won full refunds for products where they have not been good enough quality. If you take my advice its at your own risk.

In response to: "How much support would I get from ACL? Wouldn't they just ask if the manufacturer is 'attempting to resolve' hence let me be in MSI's mercy?"

          In a word, nope.

          Read this: https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…
          Specifically -

A product or good has a major problem when:

it has a problem that would have stopped someone from buying it if they’d known about it
          it is unsafe
it is significantly different from the sample or description
it doesn’t do what the business said it would, or what you asked for and can’t easily be fixed.

So your laptop can't be easily fixed, and you wouldn't have bought it if you knew it would have these issues.

If I were you, I would email Computer Alliance, and just clearly state what has happened so far, and then say you would like a refund under your ACL rights.

          How old is the laptop?

        • @misterpotatomato: Thanks for that detail. Less than 2 years old. First RMA was done within months. Was under the impression it was software related so was pretty much installing and uninstalling drivers/updating bios trying to trouble shoot it since then. The problem was infrequent back then (once or twice a month) to now its pretty frequent. MSI warranty on the laptop is 2yrs.

        • @shadowarrior:

In my opinion, I wouldn't even call the ACCC. I'd just clearly state the case to Computer Alliance and see what they say.

You would expect a $4k laptop to last more than 2 years.

        • @misterpotatomato: That's what I had hoped… :\ When I raised this with CA for the first time, the reply was along the lines of, nothing else we can do, but send it to MSI, but you can send it as well because it will be faster than getting us to process it.

        • +1

          @shadowarrior:

That's complete BS. Steel your nerves; head in there and explain what you want and why you're entitled to it, citing ACCC major faults.

Let them know you've given them and the manufacturer ample time to resolve the issue which they have not done. Don't let them handball you back to the manufacturer at this point, you've already tried that in good faith without a satisfactory response, now you want them to resolve it.

Stress that this is a $4000 laptop! Not a $100 motherboard or a $250 CPU!

You have to be assertive and firm with what you want.

Easier said than done of course but the ACCC isn't going to do anything g but advise you so its really in you to get them to sort it out.

Also, hound them and just keep hounding them. The squeakiest wheel unfortunately gets the oil.

Good luck regardless of what you do.

        • I love my MSI laptop (new) & my last one by MSI….No problems with mine!

Dell 7000-series same specs for the same price on the us ebay (delivery takes about couple weeks, i received my one last week)
regarding reviews dell is better and more reliable, will see

  • Price has gone up to $964.80 inc shipping

  • +2

Nice price but I'd probably spend my hard earned on this:
    https://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-edge…

Ssd hdd and i7 for only $250 extra.

Plus, in my experience atleast, it's hard to fault the after sales support you get from lenovo when buying one of their business range models.

    • and faster GTX 1050 Ti GPU as well

  • I don't think the specs vs prices are competitive enough to warrant getting a US machine where you may have issues with local warranty. Its also quite big compared to a lot of its competitors and the red keys give off that budget gamer look imo, though thats peronsal preference as I'm a fan of the sleeper look.

  • There's an i7 one going for $986, much more worth it imo because it also comes with 128gb NVMe ssd alongside the 1tb hdd. https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N…

    • Whats the GST/import tax threshhold now? Still $1000? Seems awfully close.

      • Yeah I think its still 1k.
