Harvey Norman Won't Price-Match Dick Smith

Recently I wanted to buy "beats x" and the best price was at Dick Smith for $145 and Harvey $167. I went on a live chat twice, the first time when I asked to price match the lady just logged off. The second time the guy simply said "We don't price match imposters" This is not the first time this has happened my mate had the same problem trying to price match with office works for another item. (Here is the link for the earphones https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/beats-by-dr-dre-beatsx-w…). Someone, please explain what to do and what happened if I'm in the wrong

Dick Smith is part of the Kogan group, which is in Hong Kong so no Australian company will match the price.

    • Makes more sense. I'll just buy from there than and get it shipped

Before you do that, get them from Kogan by using a $50 off $120 spend voucher off eBay to get it for $104. Make sure you use a free trial of Shipster to get free shipping!

Buying beats also not a smart move…..

    • +2

But they make them in rose gold colour and every gym poser girl is wearing them on Instagram so they must be good

      • -2

if they are so good and can make the girls forgot to wear top, then i am agree people should support this brand.

        • -1

Now that's what I call thinking outside the box to get in the box

        • @Sammyboy: its a delicate box.

    • These are actually pretty good. Change a bit since acquired by Apple.

Also remember warranty is provided by Dick SMith (kogan) and Australian warranty may not apply.

    • +1

It's in their terms and conditions:

      22
Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.

Kogan can be contacted by telephone at 1300 304 292 or via the Help Center.
Kogan's head office is located at 139 Gladstone Street, South Melbourne, VIC 3205.

Not sure if this counts as Australian warranty or not.

      • What I mean is that Beats/apple don't need to cover warranty. If you have any issues you send it back to kogan. They need to repair/replace. If they repair they are not required to use authentic parts or use official repairers.

"1. We make no representations or warranty in relation to the existence, non-existence, validity, availability, terms or conditions of any other warranties or product support that may or may not be offered or provided by the manufacturer of the Product"

  • Dick smith isn't Australian anymore…. What rock have you been living under?

    • Isn't Australian.. How so?

      • +1

Explained in the very first comment…

        • Kogan isn't a Hong Kong owned company.. it's a listed asx company.

        • @swimmingtoad: There is AU Kogan, and there is HK Kogan.

          Hard to spot the difference…

For the Beats headphones, buried down in the fine print it says:

This Product is offered and supplied by Kogan HK Limited pursuant to the Terms and Conditions.

Mind you it does says it's an import item which links to: https://www.kogan.com/au/direct-import/

In this case I presume you are buying from HK Kogan.

        • @D C:

HK Kogan is still owned by Kogan Au, it's just a subsidiary

        • @swimmingtoad: …and?

      • +2

Pretty sure they went into administration back in 2016 then was liquidated. Kogan then bought the brand name to sell their products.

Essentially its run by Kogan but selling under the Dick Smiths website owned by Kogan.

    • +4

you mean title should be "My Stupidity Story"

      • +1

        That doesn't rhyme.

        • +2

the headphone also not sounding good anyway…. who cares….

        • @dragonindespair:

          Lol, well played :p

        • No-one, and I do mean not anyone, has the time to make things rhyme.

You wanted to buy Beats. Nuff said

  • Nothing wrong with the BeatsX headphones. Not bass heavy at all, fast to charge and the form factor is one of the best for this kind of design. The earbuds themselves remain small and lightweight while the electronics are neatly spread across both sides to keep things balanced. And if you use Apple products they have the W1 chip. Seriously, look beyond the brand name.

  • I think the issue you're having relates in part to the culture around retail sales - I'm not saying I agree with it, just going to put my 2c forward.

In a more general sense, the whole idea behind 'bricks and mortar' retail stores is to get the customer into your store so they can buy something, because if they're not in your store they can't buy. Obviously in this day and age of online stores that's something that's being challenged more and more, but big retailers like HN still adhere to those older sales models.

It is for that reason, that contact methods such as phone, email and live chat are treated with a level of contempt by retailers, because it tips the balance of power in favour of the customer, because the salesperson can't physically interact with the customer.

    tl;dr - you'd probably have better luck asking in-store.

  • I think just let nature take its course with Harvey Norman. They've shown how much value they offer Australia's retail space.

  • These are the post that I get out of bed for….
