All those people screaming about caged eggs, hope you guys drink soy milk and not touch any dairy products.

    • Yes because we live in a world where the left is left and the right is right and if you support Shorten, you are right wing and therefore you support Turnbull and also support Hitler and the Holocaust. Please.

      • +2

Not sure what soy milk has in common with Hitler, having said that, he was a bad ass vegetarian.

        • I was suggesting Shorten, Turnbull and Hitler all fall under the same area of the political spectrum.. right wing authoritarians.

You're suggesting caged eggs, soy milk and dairy products in general are all in the same category.

It's kind of like saying a green pencil is similar to a red pencil because they are both pencils and if you don't like a green pencil then you mustn't like a red pencil. Do you understand the analogy now?

        • @Putnum: Yes, I get it Putnum. A brilliant analogy, not confusing in the slightest.

        • +1

@Putnum: Anyone who thinks Shorten is right wing needs to get their political compass checked.

        • @Seraphin7: Where do you suppose they get it checked? because I check it here: https://www.politicalcompass.org/aus2016

Labor has always been right wing. It's just the far right and the alt right are trying to pull them even further, and in 2017 I think it worked but the tide is slowly shifting back to the centre, where balanced political decisions can be made.

        • @Putnum: Interesting chart, although it is unclear how and who puts this together. That said, to suggest that Labor under Shorten is right wing is laughable.

      • +4

Spot on. You can't say cruelty is unacceptable when it comes to poultry but is totally acceptable when it comes to dairy.

        • -1

Show me a caged cow that shits into a pit and I won't buy its milk.

        • +3

          @Putnum:
Not about caged cows, but cruelty nonetheless…

          http://www.animalsaustralia.org/investigations/dairy-calf-cr…

Also, don't forget to watch the videos.

          Enjoy your latte.

        • @homersimpson: there are bad operators in every industry, my mate is 3rd gen dairy farmer and he looks after the animals well. does everything by the book and the animal welfare is his priority. Im not going to list all the things here but from my point of view everything is as i would have expected from a good humane operator. I didn't realise this until i went to his farm for a stay.

The cruelty guys investigate good and bad but only show the bad operators most of the time? how about showing the good ones also, im sure there are more good operators than bad ones.

    • This is a bit of false equivalence here, for most people there isn't really a way to still consume dairy with a reassured ethical treatment of cows, you just hope that regulation takes care of it, clearly in recent cases not enough is been done. But with eggs people have a choice, they can choose to purchase eggs from an ethical farming method (free range) or eggs from an unethical source (caged eggs. I don't think the dairy example is equivalent.

  • The $4.99 for the 18 pack of free range eggs is the normal price, has been that way for months.

  • -8

I'm surprised that I'm the first.

I implore you to please, please not buy cage eggs or meat. At a minimum, please try for RSPCA-approved.

    • You're not the first. The shills are here manipulating the deal negs with their mass downvoting.

      • +2

The shills are here manipulating the deal negs

        Now resorted to name calling?

This is ozbargain and not some ethicalbargain. If you don't like the deal, please move on. Don't pollute just because you have chosen to take a higher moral ground.

    • +14

I implore you to stop telling me what to eat.

      • +1

You're free to do what you want, I didn't tell you to do anything.

    • +5

I will buy what I can afford.

Perhaps if you feel so inclined towards free-range eggs and the like, you could pay me the difference between cage items and your suggested RSPCA-approved items and I'll happily add these to my shopping list replacing cage alternatives.

    • Yeah, I'm all for a bargain, but morally just can't buy caged eggs or anything along those lines.

  • Delicious. With these egg deals can make fluffy/souffle pancakes.

  • This is a little cheaper than supermarket, but a lot of extra faffing around to use Costco. Adding the fuel for getting this Costco, the time for driving, and the membership fee means this isn't really a deal.

I don't mind some bonus lefty tears for free though, so that's alright.

    • What? The egg to dollar ratio is way better at Costco.

      • It is way better, yes. But for the trouble and the frankly minimal actual price difference, it's not something I'd expect on the front page of a deals site. You're saving about a buck.

    • +2

Yes, the Chinese are notorious for animal cruelty.
Whole boiled dog? Not a problem…

      • -1

That's cute, I'm being stalked. Flattering, but I'm not interested in you sadchicken.

        • +1

Oh i'm quietly cheerful today thank you.

Enjoy the Year of the boiled dog.

        • +1

Well I hope not! I was his Valentine on Wednesday.

    • Obviously you don't buy Costco petrol!

As for fuel…Melb Docklands is in the free tram network.

And membership, it paya for itself again & again with some big ticket purchases. The other week i bought some mattresses saved me the equiv of 4yrs membership. Then all the little things..hot chooks, bagels, turkish rolls, roti, mayo, vegemite, youghurt, hoegaarden, orchids, hot cross buns and yes eggs all add up! They savings there let me buy expensive steak, which them saves me on dining out.

A $2 hoegaarden & a $10 tenderloin steak & ~$1' worth of potato gems would cost me about $70 for equivalent quality on the town. Oh almost another year's membership! And I can have another 10 hoeys instead of a uber home. Happy nights indeed!

Curious how so many people get on the caged egg bandwagon here with their opinions and negative votes however are strangely silent on every other OzBargain post that may involve animal mistreatment, abuse or products that ingredients result in complete devastation of natural habitat resulting in widespread death of animals and even species eradication. Are people simply that motivated regarding the caged egg issue over and above every other post that involves animal abuse (in which case why?), is it ignorance, lack of education or misinformation due to such widespread media campaigns regarding caged eggs? As an example, many products posted here contain palm oil of questionable origin, affecting animals and the environment? Why do people who are concerned for animal welfare fail to raise their concerns when such products are posted?

    • +3

Probably because they are following the heard into the abattoir, unable to think for themselves and just repeat what the leftist media tell them?

      • +2

Caring about animal abuse isn't or shouldn't be a "leftist" thing.

        • It isn't, the left just ram it down peoples necks. I care about animals, I just don't need to bang on about it.

    • +1

I see what you're saying but in my opinion caring about one issue is better than not bothering with any. Does that mean egg activists who eat dairy/meat are hypocrites? Yes. It's fine to condemn them for that. But any action/activism resulting in less animal cruelty (caged eggs) should be commended.

    • In a previous egg deal when I was trying to reason with a anti cage egg person, it was hard to find independent critical information on caged eggs.
      Edit: found it https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5257428/redir

If u Google "caged hens", the first page of results have links to sites such as voiceless, animal Australia, and the rspca. I highly doubt these sites/organisation would have something positive about caged hens.

Animal welfare is something alot of ppl can 'protest'. You certainly don't want to be locked in a cage where you cant move all your life.
However the issue is that there are no standards for free range eggs. There are egg farmers out there who take advantage of this to increase their profits.

One must wonder if the big food corporations use caged or free range eggs in their products. Sure they promote using free range eggs, but is it truly free range? True free range eggs cost more and are these passed onto the consumer?

  • +1

All these (profanity) social justice egg warriors. Get the (profanity) out. This is a great deal.

I do hate having to wait in an enormous line just to buy a pack of eggs and probiotic drink though. :( Wish there was an express line for 8 items or less.

    • Why are you getting negged? Neutralizing…

      • For some reason, when you reciprocate aggressiveness back to "ethical eggers", they don't like it.

Unless they're downvoting my hate for having to wait in large lines with two products…

  • I refuse to support a paid membership model.

    • I used to feel that way as well. But the fuel saving alone pay for the membership multiple times over every year, Costco is often the last ones to raise their prices, usually days after everyone else, I saved about $18 on my last fill up. And they do have good prices on a lot of their products, and they have products you can't find at any other shops. Their customer service and returns policy is outstanding as well. I've completely 180'd on Costco, but to each their own. One thing you could do is join, then after a few months if you found you still didn't like it you could ask for an on the spot refund on your membership, no fuss.

  • +7

The free range eggs Costco sells is not truly free range according to the CluckAR app (10,000 or more hens per acre). The organic free range range is however so I buy those. Reasonable at 6.79 for 12. Yes I care about stuff like that. If you do too then don't get sucked in by the 'free range' label, actually check they are free range. If you don't care then … this comment isn't for you.

    • +1

I don't care for the free range/organic. But I totally agree with your sentiment. I'm often bemused by the smugness of those proselytizing their free range/orangic beliefs, as many have little actual knowledge of the subjects.

Worst still those buying faux free range just encourage the proliferation of it, at the expense of the truly free range eggs.

Anyway good for you for doing your research.

    • +3

The only legitimate neg in this deal.

  • I can't eat 6 eggs a day, anyone sharing?

    • Not even at Easter?

  • Hopefully they will open a Costco in Newcastle soon.

    • +2

Not that other people care about your block/ignore list anyways.

    • +6

Please, please, please don't block me. I just don't know how I could ever go on!

    • +2

Hi greydaniel, it would be an honour to join your extensive block/ignore/bad egg list.

    • +2

Greydaniel. I my self only buy free range eggs. But I am upvoting this because neggers like you are overtop.

      • +2

Would you say he was a…bad egg?

        • +1
    • +4

Great, thank you for posting, I can now go and add to my block/ignore list everyone that upvoted or condones this cruel and barbaric industry.
Neg away, I couldn't give a toss about any of you. It would be great if you could reply too, make my job easier.

Clearly the attitude of an open-minded, intellectually rigorous, non-bigoted person.

    • +1

I wasn't going to vote for this deal, but you convinced me otherwise.

  • -7

I see caged eggs and gun deals and I automatically neg.

    • +2

Surprised, you are Cheap Steve after all.

    • +4

When it comes to eggs he's 'moderately priced Steve'

    • lol this guy is funny and he gets negs, you know what you people are a bunch of negs

      • The term is ‘Neggers’

  • +3

Not a great deal for caged eggs, my green grocery has pace farm eggs 24 for $4 all the time. Same spec as what costco is offering.

    • +1

But your green grocer is not in multiple locations, is it? Or you know, feel free to disclose the location of your green grocer?

      • -1

costco not in all locations either, but I'm sure you can find a green grocer in almost every suburb.

        • +1

I'm sure Costco is in more locations than your green grocer…

I can find plenty of green grocers around me, but not the ones who sell comparable pace farm eggs for the price you're saying you can get them for.

So where is your grocer located?

    • +1

      Proof?

    • Really? What suburb? Itz beem 20yrs since i've seen 58g eggs for under 17c/ea

      • +1

yeah i was buying my stuff from woolies all these years until i noticed woolies are damn expensive for pretty much everything fresh, have you seen the price of beef rump steaks? $15-$19… they are taking the piss right? Butchers are doing the same for $10-$12.

        Im in sydney, try campsie.

        • I'm quite familiar with Campsie. Which one are you talking about that sells cheaper pacefarm eggs than Costco? World of Fruits?

  • +2

    Eggcelent

  • +2

I don't support caged eggs, but I really wonder why only caged egg deals trigger negs and not other deals that are also bad for animals?

    • Because people here are dumb.

  • +1

I wouldn't suggest caged eggs to someone unless they were really hard up - aside from that thanks for the free range deal. At the end of the day it's up to others to judge for themselves what is right and wrong. I'm not going to neg your advert and i would never buy them as part of my values, but it's your right to choose, i don't know your situation. I guess I just hope people think about what they are doing and don't just blindly buy things

    • I am not suggesting anything to anyone. I thought the prices were good and posted the deal. People are free to make up their own choices.

People are negging the deal as if I am an advocate of caged eggs and if they feel so strongly about it, they are welcome to boycott the shops that sell caged eggs. I doubt that will happen though, come next deal from Costco/Coles/Aldi etc., These same people will go running for it. Eggs, however, seem to bring out the activist in them.

      • +2

So true, i bet 100% of the negs still shop at Coles etc. So we are all hypocrits. Lol it's because they are spoon fed the information about cage and free range in the media. People shouldn't be so lazy and actually do some research. Keep up the good work, freedom of choice and bargains is what it's all about i guess on this site, a world where we are dictated to is not a world i want to live in and sorry if i seemed like an activist type, because i'm certainly not one

  • For the few/two/one who might go to the trouble of watching.

Landline 2018 Ep.1 is still available to watch on the ABC iview app.

Middle story. The free-range egg+ example of how consumer preference/pressure and just the potential of stricter government regulation, by way of that, can and does work.
In this case, foresight that will make the lives of many many chickens substantially more tolerable than would otherwise be the case. Others will follow, even if not by choice.

Also happening in other spheres, however reluctantly and through gritted-teeth. Ultimately money does the talking for the greater part, but the process washes through in different ways.

Hen-ce in this case certainly, the particularly important role of the consumer.

Could've ended worse, PJC. Mind you, I did intentionally skim the rest of the thread.
    Fun though, I'm sure…

    :-)
