@Spackbace: Yeah a set of mine are at DOT dealer tried to flog them for 5k with the car and said he would try and get us an extra 500 to 1k tops for them. was a little disappointed when he read the sale contract and saw i'd put a condition in about them stating they are not for sale with the car but offers will be considered.

So he ended up screwing himself because he got the guy buying the car to pay more than the asking price which ended up being substantially more than we had it up for sale for on consignment, more than one person bidding for it, and it only went that way because he thought he was getting the plates too We took the cash the plates and let them to argue the point.

  • This would make things easier if you said what plates you intend to get, you can always fill out the application before so someone doesn't cut your grass

AFL X is available get them before licensing department figure out what the acronym is

    • I don't get it yet. But they can withdraw the issued plate and prohibit its use if it is later found to be offensive etc.

    • Australian Football League? Or do you mean the new issue plates are AFL without having to pay the stupid plate fee and…. oh dear lord!! Lawsuit incoming in 3… 2… 1…

      • Nope seen people get away with loads of the which is why they run a more stringent check but if the researcher hasn't got a clue then it's luck of the draw or how well you can bullshit.

No the AFL X is the New faster game of AFL played on a rugby pitch it's actually seems closer to Gaelic football than AFL first game was this week

out of bounds is a turn over not a Contest much shorter time allowed after taking a mark to keep the game moving.

        • +3

          GaeFL

        • @Kangal: Yeah not really sure what to make of it but you can see some of the rules transferring to AFL

I think it has more potential as a good training tool the lack of space and the quicker game is causing some issues. Would certainly help player development and could see s shift in the giants who play the came to more agile faster players

Potentially would be better creating a real hybrid with Gaelic football they could use it in more markets around the world with access to more grounds given it's played on a rugby / soccer pitch

    Never.

Why not just change your name to match your existing number plate?

    • +7

Because my number plate is 8008135

  • +3

Not even people who own personalised plates will tell you its value for money.

  • +8

You can make yourself look like a tool for free.

    Why waste your money?

I bought the JDM plates and they look great, no regrets! They come with Japanese writing too! $290 + annual fee. Price is excessive for plates made in prison by inmates - I’ve been told this, it could be wrong.

  • -1

I like the ones that goes OQO0OQO

  • Unless it's for a business, you're basically paying to look like a pretentious knobhead.

    Yeah, well worth it.
    O.o

  • Is OZBRGN taken ?

  • Not sure why you think you are not paying enough for your standard plates.

  • +2

Unless you can think of a really good reason,

I know someone with the number plate 'NA' has gotten a few fines as sometime when cops fill in fines, they would write NA(not applicable) for number plate. Another good one I have seen is 'ZZ2ZZ'.

I often see number plates with owner names and when they do stupid shits on the road I curse their names instead of their cars, like 'Mustafa why are you driving 40km/h in 80 zone?!' or 'Sh3i1a, use your indicators!' etc

  • How is this a question.

    • +3

      Was that a question?

      • Rhetorically, yes

        • I’m sorry I don’t understand, was that the question?

  • It is like buying a small framed painting/photo for the outside of your house and paying annual fee to keep it there…

  • Does anyone know why states charge a yearly fee for personalised plates?

    • +4

      Because they can.

    • All the money goes back to roads in NSW

    • +3

Only NSW (The ripoff state) does

    • Does any1 know, do all states charge ongoing added fees for keeping the number plate you paid for ?
To the OP, are the plates worth it, well since you have absolutely no power to bargain with the government charging the personal number plate fees, the only real question to ask, which only you can answer is IS THE COST WORTH IT TO YOU ?
I often pay $7.50 for an iced cofee, I pay more than most for fuel, because I choose to have a high seated 4x4 for comfort and back-health reasons. Some would say, but you can make your own coffee for 20 cents, you can get around for 7litre/100km instead of 15litre/100km .. its not 'worth it' . However with things which you cannot bargain on, the 'worth it' becomes purely subjective.
I could make coffee at home (and miss the views at beach cafe) , I could drive a car cheaper on fuel (and be less comfortable).
You could have the personalised number plate which is obviously worth something >> to you . Or you could not have it, and just have the regular plates, or just have the different plates that offer different colours etc (I think they are a 1 off fee, rather than ongoing, also a pink number plate for pink car, may increase resale value most likely) .

  • Total deal

  • depends if it's a cool plate or not

  • +5

I think it is. Everyone who says 'you'll look like a tool' etc is the real tool, too afraid to do even this little thing for fear of standing out from the other sheep, what a way to live. It's your car, if you want to personalise it you should, the only value comes from your own enjoyment of it, it's for you, not for the human shaped tofu surrounding you. Most I've seen have been completely normal and not douchey at all, almost all the douchey ones I've seen were predictably on BMW's. How many modern cars look good with a standard white plate anyway? Not too many, even getting the black version of your standard plate looks alot better, they should come that way.

    • Do you drive a Commodore

      • Not a commodore, but a Toyota Lexcen complete with “JESUS LIVES” decal livery - it’s kind of the same thing.

      • -1

I wouldn't be caught dead in a Commodore.

        • You mum.

        • -1

Sorry lol, I have a lifelong dislike of them since I was a little kid.

  • +1

    Short answer: No.

If you have a passion for cars or just really want to make your car more unique, then yes.

    All down to priorities.

(ignore people saying it makes you pretentious, you do you)

  • -2

    Not the OzBargain way

  • +5

“Hi, I’m the AMG guy” - please add to title

  • +2

Why would you possibly provide more revenue to the stupid RMS?
Don't they already rip us with Rego?

  • I like my neighbours..its basically her bra size..lol

  • +2

I have personalised plates. the colour and size match better with my car and the numbers combo also make the overall look tidier.
    It's only $105 p.a. who gives a crap.

  • +3

I saw a Lamborghini (like the latest model, looks like a space shuttle) and it had the standard WA number plates. Looked so tacky. You just spent $300,000 on a car and you can' fork out an extra couple of hundred dollars on a custom number plate?

Another example was this lawyer around Perth wearing a $4,000 suit and a $20 Reserve tie. LOL. Get some class!

Even the cheapest custom plate (Platinum @ $125) looks fine. Otherwise upgrade to the Prestige. But surely, not a bog standard plate.

    • +2

Probably wants to keep a low profile. I would do the same.

      • Not if he's driving a lambo.
I have a huge bitcoin sticker on the side of mine, and constantly change the number plate to whatever shitcoin I'm peddling at the time.

    • +2

It was probably leased by the driver, not owned.

    • So to summarise, you’re passing unnecessary public judgement on the choices someone makes regarding a car they own but you could never afford, and on a financially savvy lawyer wearing a suit you also can’t afford. Seems like more of a reflection on the kind of person you are!

If you need to put personalised plates on your Lamborghini for it to turn heads, you’re doing it wrong. It’s a Lamborghini and it is a beauty in itself to behold. There are a few that get around in my area and I genuinely could not tell you the type of plates they were on. To focus on the number plates while looking at a Lamborghini would be completely missing the point.

Oh and even the cheapest, poxiest Lamborghini starts from $380k before tax and stamp duty - and it’s called the Huracan you filthy little pleb.

Sorry why would anyone listen to you? LOL. Get some class!
Oh and just out of curiosity, what kind of car do you drive, and what brand of suits do you wear?

  • +1

Never a matter of worth it here in NSW with the yearly payment. Is it something you're willing to pay for?

I kept the same standard combination, but changed the plate style. Silver text on black background. The black and white plates just looked horrible on my car. One off payment for the stylised plates.

I just don't see the point of a yearly payment. I saw a 2013 model wrx the other day with the number plate AWDWRX. No shit Sherlock, we know it's an awd wrx…

I've heard WA has a one off payment. Now that is "worth it".

  • +4

If you are an AMG kid, then yes, of course.

  • I have one set of personalised plates but unlike the AMG Kid, I have a Porsche that I know isn't a 911.

The plates that came with it looked bad and I don't really care about the $105 a year. Cashrewards pays for it.

    • Someone i know has those 911 plates on his 911 funnily enough

  • +4

No. Unless your plate says AMG200

  • "let's do it let's do it" - Vennu Mallesh

  • My last car came with personalised number plates that was hard to get. I thought that it was cool first 3 months and ended up hating it after.

  • +1

It's worth getting it on your $80k investment vehicle. After all, "first impressions count" :))

I'm quite disappointed, I came on this thread purely to see these comments and got none..

  • I've got one. It is a memorial of my father who passed away many years ago. He was a driver and used to get the income from that more than 20 years.

For me in Victoria, it is worth it.

  • +1

This is probably not the right forum to ask this question if you wanted a positive response.

  • +3

If you want it, and can afford it, do it. Do you really need to ask on a forum?

  • +3

    Only on an AMG

    • You chuck an numeric only on an AMG.

  • +1

I had a rule when I was young to never date a girl with personalised plates. She’s either really bad with her money, or she’s conditioned to receiving useless, overpriced gifts.

  • $200 upfront then $100 a year is not a huge sum when you consider the costs of owning and maintaining a car. Besides, people spend far more on fancy wheels, and all sorts of optional extras when buying new cars that don't hold much of their value come resale. So spending on a personalised plate is no different. Its just another thing you spend to have on your car because you like it. If you can comfortably afford it and enjoy having it then go for it.

  • If you are asking this question, it's not for you.

  • I've seen "420LOL" and "SXCBOI" which made me say "wow very individual and personal touch amongst us sheep".

But honestly the only one that made me feel impressed was a red number plate with white text that had "57OP" on it.

  • Worth what?

  • Since I used personalised number plates, my sex life has improved greatly.

  • +1

Only if you work for Westpac and put them on an Audi.

  • Of course it's not worth it. It's a luxury spend, so if you got the money, why not.. No one can answer for you except yourself.

  • +3

Is it worth buying Mercedes? Is it worth buying Play Station? Is it worth going to gym? Is it worth going to a game? There are a lot of stuffs that are not essential in living. We do them to create a balance of life, both physically and mentally. If buying that makes you happy, go for it. remember to keep a balance of your wallet too. just my opinion.

    • Seriously though, is it worth buying a Mercedes?

  • +1

Spend $200/year to advertise that you are a d#^khead?

    • +1

Haha good point. I rarely see personalized plates and think its cool.

  • Depends if you spent $80k on an investment car….

Nah but serious, over all it depends. I've seen some put nicknames on number plates. It gets them a confident wave as they drive past. If they had a lady in the passenger seat they may translate this as if they're popular or a somebody. With business clients in the passenger seat may have same effect. Isn't worth much more than that. Note this only works in smaller towns where a large number of people know who you are and will confidently wave/acknowledge you after seeing the number plate.

If you're just putting your car model/etc, it's kinda cool but in all honesty let the car do the talking - isn't worth the $200 imo.

  • -2

depends, is this for your AMG? or is it for an investment?

  • I'd like to talk to you about a beautiful bridge…

  • Get a tacky bumper sticker for <$10.

  • I have custom plates, but I'm pretentious and really don't care. :) HOWEVER, mine were the "once off" fee and that's it, they're mine for life (unless I sell them, probably even make a profit). If I had to pay a yearly fee though I wouldn't bother with them!!

    • when we were housed in QLD we had one we loved!!! 455OLE we gave it away to a relative when we moved!

  • I got Ahan for just over $2000. I think it is well-worth it.

  • it's a 100% luxury purchase, so it's your call.

In terms of OzBargain Community, i can safely everyone in here will say no.

  • No chance. Robbery from the RTA

  • The cost to show off and say you are special.

    Worth it? depends on you

  • +1

YES if u want to make money

  • No. Why would you make it easier for anyone to remember your plate?

  • +1

Whether a personalised number plate is "worth it" is purely down to your own personal taste.

It's like asking if it is worth buying any other subjective thing like a particular food, music, art, etc.

If you like personalised number plates and think they're worth it, then they are. Otherwise they aren't.

We don't know if it is worth it for you. Only you know the answer to that.

  • +1

according to VicRoad, you pay a one off fee for making a personailsed plate and no ongoing cost.

Personlised number plates has sentimental value. It is a way to mark an event or a relationship.
My brother and sister in law created a custom plate with their names combined.
They did not do it because it was cheap or expensive.
They did it to show their commitment to one another.

    They have no regret.

    • Was their name Chun & Li?

  • I think one of the biggest issues with personalised plates is, whatever you choose, it will look stupid.
