  • this app is buggy as all hell on IOS 11.1 Iphone 5s, haven't even used it for more than 10 mins and I am already over using the app.

    • Then why the +ve vote?

      • +1

because I like the idea of the app and any savings is better than none.

        • +2

I like the idea of the mymaccas app but is my sanity worth a dollar over these "specials" - just wait for it to be on special at Coles/Woolies and it'll be a better price.

    • +7

It's nowhere close to the best looking app on the market, and we will get it there.
But we are definitely fast in fixing any bugs brought to our attention.

Do let me know and I will get on top of it immediately :)

        Hi mate

Have downloaded the app and intend to use it regularly. I have other services I will use to complement such as Price Hipster until your DB is a bit more robust. I do like the app and want it to succeed hance the following feedback:

        1) Search needs to be more broad. If I search "tissue eucalyptus" I get no results. Once I add the "s" on tissues I get results. Be good to get nearest match where there is no match (or after exact matches is better).

        2) If I search "Mint Jelly", I only get results from Coles, however Woolworths have it too but call it "Mint Sauce Jelly". I think point 1 above will help here.

        3) "Bean and Rice" and "Bean & Rice" should give same results but don't (same item spelt differently per flavour).

        4) I can't get this product to show for Woolworths no matter how I search https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/search/products?searchTer…

        5) San Remo Penne Pasta No 18 (750g) and Penne Rigati Pasta No 18 (750g) need to be linked (Coles + Woolworths)

        6) Double Length Toilet Paper and Double Roll Toilet Paper need to be linked

        7) I can't get item to show in the app for Woolworths https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/661303/bos…

        8) I can't get item to show in the app for Woolworths https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/228978/poo…

        9) San Remo Penne Rigati Pasta No 18 (500g) shows up at least 3 times (duplicates)

Let us know once the above changes are made and I'll have another crack and see how we go then…

        Thanks!

        • Hi singingwolf,

Thank you so much for the feedback.
We are working hard on making the DB more robust and certainly appreciate your feedback.

We will be addressing all your points and will get back to you.
I can't seem to see the Product on point no. 4 on the Woolworths website?

If you could let me know what it is that'd be great.

          Cheers!

        • @grocerygetter: Much appreciated.

Number 4 is "Beanfields Bean & Rice". A few should show up.

Try postcode 2100 if none show for your area.

          Ta

        • @grocerygetter:

hey there. my phone is Windows OS so i cant give any feed back on your actual app.

however the feature I always look for in something like this is comparing discounts and unit price. my go to example is peanut butter. if the 150g container is 30% off but the 680g container is still cheaper by unit price I dont really care. however when the 680g container is on sale i would be interested, even if it is only 10% off.

alerts set to the unit price level might be one way to achieve this.

edit: anyhow good luck with the app. hope it is successful for you.

      • +3

Need to add a % discount column.

    • +2

Looks like they just started - maybe post what the bugs are to help them out?

  • You are comparing a 1kg OMO to a 2kg OMO and saying the 2kg one is more expensive.. Can you not be so misleading? Happy to be proven wrong if in fact it's $7 for 2 kg.

And Gilette Mach 3 cartridges. Looks cheaper but they are actually the same price each.

Also, I love the idea of selling Woolworths prawns at Coles in smaller bundles for cheaper and then making it the same price per kg.

    • +4

      Thanks mate!

We matched 20,000 products from both Supermarkets manually against each other so there were bound to be mistakes made.
I've removed these from the list for now and will ensure they are matched appropriately.

      Cheers!

      • +1

No probs, just making sure the mistakes don't detract from the bargains!

I love the idea but I am way more interested in % discount than $ discount. I'm more excited by half price sirena tuna than a sweet $20 off a Dymo labelmaker….

    • +3

      Agree.
Next week I shall put up the % discount for the supermarkets. Stay tuned on Wednesday.

      • Nice one. I'll be pretty keen to get on this.

Can you also list the original price? That would be good for comparison. Cheers op

Is it feasible to add Aldi?

    • +3

Yes definitely feasible and in the works :)

      • +2

Aldi don't seem to have as many % off deals but would be awesome as a benchmark to compare prices - but tricky as they don't tend to stock the same brands.

        • +1

          like brands only cheaper

Why do I need to make an account?

    Bertocchi Brothers
    Ex Hot Chilli Sopressa

I doubt that's $2.88 per kg at Coles.

    Sistema
Klip It Rectangular Container 1L (10pk)

    10 for $5.77?

Lol $20 a hour and I'll go through ND fix your terrible pricing :p

    • Thank you for the amazing feedback.

Upon investigating, it seems like Coles is selling 125g of Sopressa for $2.88 while Woolworths is $23.00/kg.
The different units of measurement has meant that is actually inaccurate. I shall rectify that now.

      Cheers!

      • +2

Haha no man :) there are alot more like that, you will have a busy evening.

For a feature consider the ability to add items you like then export the shopping direct to we/Coles shopping cart for an online order.

Consider the ability to click an item, say tuna and it makes a small drop down box of all similar products to compare.

  • Curious, how are you getting these prices? My understanding is that grocery prices vary based on location and won't be the same everywhere.

    • Hi Peanut,

That is the reason that we ask you for your postcode in order to provide you with prices.

      Cheers,
      Shawn

      • Yet you are advertising these prices.. Isn't that frowned upon to say it can be the price, but because of where you live, we'll charge you this much instead (more)

Not having a dig at you, just wondering how you got the prices you did.

        • +1

          Very good point pennypincher.

The next time I will consider State/Location specials prior to posting, noting that they could indeed be different.

          Cheers!

        • Yes. OP can have legal action against them if they get too big.

I made one of these apps but the legal ramifications scared me off.

  • I’ve tried Frugl before, but it doesn’t send notifications to me when one of my items goes on special.

Is your app any different, functionality-wise, as compared to Frugl?

    • +2

Not going to lie. It is fairly similar. But there are a few differences.

Two key differences on our side :
      - We are on Android/iOS which allows us to implement notifications on the phone (which are on our Product Roadmap)
      - We will be launching delivery shortly to bring the groceries to your doorstep.

      • +1

+1 for being honest upfront. Delivery is sounding great, but how will you make your delivery better than those already existing (ie Coles/Woolies own).

Just giving you a few tips :)

  • +6

    Hey Op, thanks for posting.
A tip I suggest to all newbies, have a squiz at other posts in the same category & see what works & what doesn't.

In you instance, look at Savas, the master of grocery posting. Divided items into Category would be the first thing. Last time since item's been on special is handy.

    • +3

Great response ! Will study Savas posts and see how we can improve on them :)

      • +5

I bet it will be easier to employ Savas than try to copy him

  • Installed App (Android)signed up and logged in. Screen size is incorrect this is on 5.2in phone. It's a mess. Locked up.
had to kill app. Please check your username and password and try again message.
Uninstalled APP. This seems to be a BETA version.

    • Good afternoon,

Sorry to hear about your experience.

Mind if I ask what model phone so we can look into it?
We are still trying to support all phones in a stable manner (iPhone X is a clear example of that)

      Cheers,
      Shawn

      • Hi,
Using a Motorola Moto G5 Plus, when you press the hamburger menu the setting which is at the bottom only shows half. Not sure if your using the correct app settings from google but my understanding is when you design an app it gets adjusted to the screen size of the phone. Tried to sign up again but said the username is already in use, but I can't login either.

        • +1

          I used a g5 plus no issues.

        • Have you by any chance modified the phone? I know people who change dpi settings for phones quite often get those problems.

        • @K1LL3R12:
Nothing modified. Stock standard that's why I bought it. Never had any problems with any other apps before.

  • +1

I have the "half price" app and it's really good. Woolworths and Coles are on it.

  • -1

FWIW, the Schweppes 24 packs were $9.99 at IGA earlier in the week. I assume they aren't anymore.

  • +1

"Top" is debatable. A lot of stuff in your list is overpriced supplements or beauty products.

    This is a grocery bargain.

You also need to learn what OzBargainers like from supermarkets. Ice cream, tuna, spam are a few that come to mind.

    • Hi mate,

Will definitely cater to the OzBargain crowd in my next post.

    • Spam? Really?

So are the coles prices the online prices? If so, they are much more expensive than there in store prices (unless they are a catalogue price which are the same online and in-store). Is a bit misleading when you compare a woolies special price to a coles standard online price as the difference would be inflated to in-store. You could compare standard (non- special) online prices and 99% off the time woolies would still be cheaper.

    • Syba, you are absolutely correct.

We are trying to get the ball rolling to obtain in-store pricing from Coles, but not having much luck.

If anyone reads this and can help, please do reach out to us.

      • +3

to obtain in-store pricing from Coles,

They won’t share that with you and make it easier for their competitors

        • Would they not want to be competitive with their competitors by displaying their in-store pricing?

        • +3

          @grocerygetter:

          It's the other way around…

      • Your product is just a website scraper, if it uses the Woolies or Coles API, it's a possibly illegal scraper. I've been there.

No one's going to help you by providing you something worth 1000x more than what you have here. If someone worked out a method to grab instore prices and ship them to the web every day then they would already be swimming in revenue.

There are already scrapers that are much, much better than your current one whom would be much better suited for teaming with, such as Pricehipster.

  • Top 100 items on Discount

    Based on?

    • Sorted by $ value.
So highest $ value price difference between the two :)

      • +3

        $ value.

        value or cost ???

        there's a difference.

        • +2

          Probably cost
          Value is subjective.

        • @Gimli: dollar value, he means.

  • +1

Thanks I have downloaded and will give it a try

  • Are there plans for a % discount order?

    • Yes, this is feedback we received from others and will be implementing it next week.

We also seek to categorize by State.

Great rapid iteration of your product but in a Lean Startup your product isn't the product, your business model is the product. Are you testing other business model hypotheses? For example, revenue, key partners (are the supermarkets ok with this), … see Business Model Canvas and, if you haven't already, I highly recommend "The Startup Owner's Manual" by Steve Blank ($8 on the Aus Kindle Store - a true bargain if ever saw one). All the best!

    • +1

      Great advice!

We are indeed testing other business model hypotheses.

I will get onto reading "The Startup Owner's Manual" this week, grabbed my first Kindle a fortnight ago and loving it!

    • No one's going to bootstrap a startup on this app… wtf is this?

You need a really good idea and great execution to create a startup from a simple mobile app.

      • All big things start off small and the best way to learn and dominate is in a niche.

A good idea and execution usually leads to a zombie (living dead) startup - I've seen too many of those. Lean Startups don't execute they search until they find a repeatable, scalable and viable business model. Rapid iteration of hypothesise-build-measure-learn is the key.

        • -1

No. A bad idea and poor execution leads to a bad startup.

I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about.

        • +1

@StoneSin: I guess I’m done. I quit my high paying financial services job for this

        • @grocerygetter: That's sad.

  • Not sure if this is accurate.. In VIC, Schweppes 24 can boxes are $10.50 @ Woolworths

  • -1

The data displayed is spam/advertisement and not a deal post…

ie: Dymo Letra Tag has been $20 before - $59 is FAR from a bargain.

Won't neg or anything because I like the idea of the app, it does what it says it does (displays where your shopping list is cheapest that week), but it doesn't display bargains as such… And this list isn't bargains as such.

Edit: Woolworths $30 price is off screen on mobile…. Still, as mentioned has been $20 before and is often $20 (every few months). Even the $30 at Woolworths isn't really a deal.

With the app, I highly recommend adding in a camera barcode scanning feature. You get that suggestion free of charge… Now that's a bargain ;)

    • +1

      Good morning dyl,

Granted we are still trying to master the ropes on how to provide bargains to the OzBargain community.

We have taken on some feedback from other posters and yourselves which we will implement for next week's Coles/Woolworths specials.

      Stay Tuned!

Thanks for the recommendation. We will look to add it to our Product Roadmap (which is growing!)

  • This is the most confusing app I have ever heard or used of.. Just sort by unit price people and pick the lowest or remember them.

    • That's not how you ozbargain it!

      • Isn't it or do you mean just scoring the high priced items for low discounts because you can do that too.

  • Can't download from google play (my account may be US based). Can you (or someone) make the apk available? Or remove the geographic restrictions?

    • Hi alect,

May I suggest changing the Play Store country first?

If you are not in favor of doing that, do drop me a message and I'll help sort this out for you privately.

      Cheers!

  • +1

Trolleysaver does the exact same thing.

  • Caltrate Bone & Muscle Health Tablets 100 pack

This one is on half price at woollies for $9. Your post says cheaper at coles for $18 odd.

  • I wonder how telstra feels about that gradient background you used

  • +1

There's a lot of these apps. I made one a year ago when I thought there weren't, of course mine was better than all the useless crud that gets shuffled as software… but yeah, this isn't a first ladies and gentleman.

Why not make this a webapp?

    • Yeh was going to say the same, there's alot of these on the market already so surprised me that alot here think it's a first!

  • +1

Mate this is an incredible idea, well done.

If you could have the option to arrange them by % discount that would be great.

Looking forward to seeing it fine tuned.

  • Even after putting the correct postcode the prices are wrong. In QLD Woolworths select and coles own brand 24 X 600ml spring water are $6.00 because there is no deposit charged here.

In the app they appear costing $8.40 which is NSW, SA and maybe NT prices.

    • Hi munecito,

      Thanks for this.
The postcode should correspond with the correct prices.

Allow me to look into it and get back to you.

      Cheers,
      Shawn
