Traffic Lights Camera on an Intersection Flashed

Few minutes ago I was returning home from white night festival in the city towards south east. I was following my google map instruction at one point where it showed me to take a right turn and I stopped in the right lane as the light was red. I then saw my map telling me to continue straight instead of right and I indicated left and moved on as the straight lane was green and only the right turn lane was red. As I moved from the right lane towards the left and continued straight, I saw the camera at the traffic lights flashing on my car (I was the only one on the road). Is this a traffic offense to move left from a right only lane and continue straight?

Well you would be crossing a solid line so that is an offence.

    • my bad. I didn't realise that. What is the offence level for this? How many demerit points and what is the penalty? :(
Sorry, too many questions. Please let me know if you know answers for these.

      • Going through a red light in NSW is a $480 fine.

        • I didn't go through a red light. I happened to change from a right only lane to take a left and then continue straight when it was green.

          @ozshuttler:

If your car was in the right turning lane when you went into the intersection (even though you were merging into the left lane) that will be considered running a red. It's a stiff fine from memory and no chance to get out of it either.

@stratbargain: makes sense to me now. Lesson learnt today - never trust your google maps :@

@ozshuttler: Lesson should be not to run a red (especially if there's a red light camera).

@ozshuttler: GPS directions will re-calibrate after you've taken a different route, even if it's an accidental turn. Next time, be safe and continue the direction you're going.

Additionally, Google Maps may be taking congestion into consideration and might appear to be taking the wrong route. Though, I've had many times where it takes me in a crazy route, but eventually I get to the destination.

If you were Ozbargaining at the same time

    NO

    yes

  • You drove to white night?

But also I've done this before and haven't been fined. I assumed that they'd review the camera and realise you've not actually made an illegal turn.

This scenario has been posted many times here. Yes.

    • In two of those threads linked, the OP didn't end up paying a fine… One because they waived it due to the circumstances (getting out of the way of an ambulance), and the other one because apparently no fine was issued.

Keep in mind the rule of the motorway, if you miss your turn, exit at the next one…simples!

  • If a strange looking envelope appears in your letterbox in the next two weeks then bin it. Problem fixed.

Then if a strange man comes to your door in the next four weeks, ignore him.
Then if the phone rings in the next six weeks don't answer it.
Then don't drive near the RTA or police station for the rest of your existence.

      Problem fixed.

  • You're done! In Victoria it will be $396 plus 3 demerit points.

    • I read in Road Safety Rule book this morning and it says for Driving on or across a continuous white edge line, the penalty unit is 3. Each penalty unit is $150+ so I think I might end up at $450+.

  • I'm not condoning this practice, but you probably won't get a fine. Your car would've never gotten picked up by the cameras on the right side, so they can't prove that you've actually turned right when the lights are red, as a result you'll most likely get away with it. However, it is still a dangerous act so please don't do it again.

    • I am aware it will be dangerous for the vehicles coming behind but in my case I have verified there is no other vehicle on the lanes to my left and that its a green to go straight. But, I will refrain from doing this now even if it is a clear road.

      • I know you are not suppose to do this but if there was no cars behind you, you could reverse back a bit, then change lane before you pass the solid thick white line, therefore the camera would not have detected you.

  • I saw the camera at the traffic lights flashing on my car

    Once or twice?

    • twice

Ohh.. you'll most likely get a letter. Read it and then ask for a review. Reply with your version of the event.

You’ve stated that you didn’t turn right in violation of the red turning light. There is no reason for them to enforce the penalty notice.

  • If in NSW submit a request for review with the SDRO online. if it happened as you say it did, you will be fine.

  • White night festival? Is that a rally of some sort with tiki torches and white robes?
